Super Rugby Round 14 teams: Quade Cooper cleared to face Bulls; three changes for Tahs

By The Roar / Editor

Quade Cooper has been cleared of a concussion sustained last weekend and will suit up to face the Bulls in a crucial Super Rugby clash this weekend.

The half failed to finish the Rebels last clash against the Reds, but has passed a fitness test this week.

In a further boost to the Rebels chances of tackling the Bulls, Matt Toomua will play his first game of the season for the franchise, having arrived in Melbourne earlier this week after a stint playing in England with Leicester.

The Waratahs have made three changes to their side ahead of a derby clash with the Reds. Tom Robertson, Adam Ashley-Cooper and Lachlan Swinton all move into Daryl Gibson’s first XV, with Robertson making his first start of the season after a long injury layoff.

Queensland have meanwhile named New Zealander Matt McGahan to make his Super Rugby debut at fullback. That’s one of two changes to the Reds XV, with Lukhan Salakaia-Loto being promoted to the starting line-up at No.6.

Angus Scott-Young moves across to No.8, while Scott Higginbotham moves to the bench.

The Hurricanes have also named their side, with Beauden Barrett sitting out due to All Blacks enforced rest ahead of the World Cup.

James Marshall takes his spot, while the other chance to their starting side sees Du’Plessis Kirifi play in the number seven jumper for Reed Prinsep, with Ardie Savea moving to number eight.

yes it was encouraging and needed. jordie put in a few great tackles as well. TJ has always been an excellent defensively but he was bossing those scrums, luckily the ref let him do what he did (some of it was borderline) or surely the blues would have scored at some point.

That doesn't really sound like Quade. If anything I think he'd be happy for the rest, but the reality is the Rebels need to be firing on all cylinders here out for a chance, and Toomua is new to the squad and the game plan. It would be nuts to start him at 10.

Also, I hope they play with the same defensive grit they showed against the Blues last week. It was great to watch. I thought BB was excellent defensively last week and am a bit disappointed he's not playing again this week. There's no question about his attacking skills, but wow I love watching him defend well. Same with TJ. He was an absolute nightmare at Blues scrum time - just awesome.

Totally agree. Maybe they believe between TJ and Jordie they'll have enough direction to cope without a specialist 10? I sure hope so....

First order of business is shutting down Kerevi, so AAC for defence is reasonable. I'm not expecting a high scoring affair, but given the green nature of the back 3 for the Reds I think I may have gone with the bigger body of Rona running off Beale and chasing kicks over Newsome.

Yeah it’s possible they just guessed, or whoever told them just guessed. Or it’s possible he just shouldn’t be playing this week.

You're right about the forwards mate. It's a good squad and the bench one week can be the starters the next. Korczyk is playing well, had a blinder in club rugby last week against Brothers and he cant get a bench. It's mainly the backs that are the worry in the future. I dont know anything about Seb Wileman though?

I’m sure I heard the commentators say he’d failed a HIA but then again it was a Foxsports feed so that doesn’t mean they had a clue what they were talking about. The match write up on the Rebels website says he was removed as a “safety precaution”

Toomua may be an impetus for Quade being keen to front up quickly. I hope not for his health’s sake.

Yes riddler, I wouldn't want to talk him up too much... he was Man of the Match for Norths vs Easts last week as voted by the Tigers team. I think he's played about 5 prem games at 10 (Ive seen 2) and he comes across as a solid player, can pass, tackle, kick and has a dab occasionally. Good goal kicker. Seems to be growing in confidence, coming back from a broken leg. Big step up vs Tahs though. Mind you, in both games I watched, Duncan P was having an absolute field day and made him look like a co-star. He is a bloody good footballer mate.

Ok McGahan to fullback. Least amount of disruption and can probably swap with Hegarty. He’s got a fairly good boot.

samalavich Listening and watching a Michael Cheika coaching youtube clip. If you last more than 15 seconds without fainting or bleeding from the ears you have passed the HIA.
