Griffin: Broncos have lost their soul

By News / Wire

Former Brisbane coach Anthony Griffin says the Broncos have lost their identity following a record loss in the NRL finals.

Parramatta ended Brisbane’s season and handed the power club their worst-ever loss with a 58-0 thrashing in the first week of finals on Sunday.

The Broncos endured their worst start to a season this century (1-5) in coach Anthony Seibold’s first year at the helm, and despite a mid-season revival, the campaign also ended with a whimper.

Griffin coached the Broncos to 54 wins from 101 games before he was sacked in 2014 to make way for Wayne Bennett, who Seibold replaced this season.

“They’ve lost their identity which is the biggest thing for Brisbane, they’ve lost their soul or whatever you want to call it over the last couple of weeks,” Griffin told NRL 360.

“If they’d got to the semis and gone down with an admirable loss, you could half explain the year away and say they were blooding a lot of young guys, but it was the way they lost it.

“They’ve got to re-find (their soul), it was all built on effort and playing for each other that Bennett started there and instilled in the place and the great players put in.”

Seibold was tipped to lead Brisbane to a drought-breaking premiership but they struggled for direction and consistency all year before scraping into eighth and bouncing out of finals.

“Coming eighth in Brisbane isn’t a pass mark. There are a lot of clubs that would like to be in their shoes and they wear that responsibility … it was the way that they lost,” Griffin said.

“There has been a lot of positive things that have happened there this year with the players they’ve brought through, but the way they finished their seasons is the most alarming thing because the whole season then looks like it stood for nothing.”

The Broncs, just a lot of old Rockhampton feuds being fought out in Redhill. Hook, Seibold, White and 1/2 the board are old Rocky boys and they fight like brothers.

Green gave a 29yld McGuire a 4 year contract and has just extended a 34yld Cooper an extra season? You would think he would have learned from JT and Scott one year to many mistakes.

The Broncos ain’t what they use to be and haven’t been since the introduction and Salary Cap. When Mr Gee and Bennett could succcessful get who they wanted the Broncos were always going good. If the soul is now being questioned I think it was eroded over the years by Bennett leaving and then returning after jumping between Sydney clubs chasing his own ego, money driven self gratification. Broncos stood for Qld now they stand for? I prefer my team (Cowboys) to stand for the region it represents. Meaning local talent fill the leadership group. The Broncos probably have a lot of NSW (TPJ, Hass, Staggs, Lodge, Bird, Roberts and NZ born talent filling their books nowadays. Flicking the high priced imposters and getting back to Qlderds first is the best way to go IMO.

Cronk said he will do it as long as he doesn't have to train. His wife Tara has okayed him to just fly up for match days, and he will also do Sydney games, apart from Penrith as he doesn't like to drive that far west.

Bit rich from Griffin seeing his record was 8th & straight out to the Cowboys in 2012 & 2014 with a 12th in between n 2013. Griffin had the experience of guys like Hodges, Civoniciva, Prince, Parker & Thaiday plus other older heads surrounded by the up and coming Gillett, Hunt, Oates, Norman, Wallace, McGuire, McCullough, Yow Yeh etc and oversaw the Barba recruitment debacle. He also sacked Dane Gagai because he couldn't manage him so don't think he's one to throw stones. If ever a coach didn't get the best out of his representative players it was hook. Biggest problem with the Broncos at the moment is the big money long term contracts done under Bennett. For a guy who lost the Broncos part of their soul when he reneged on upgrading Civoniciva who left for the Panthers in earlier times, Bennett had no problem splashing cash at Boyd, Milford, McCullough and recruiting an injured Bird and fragile Roberts to big money contracts. Who gives a 4 year $800K a season contract to a 30 year old with mental health issues? This season they were always under the pump with the scattergun recruitment before Seibold arrived with a squad full of up to 5 rookie halves including Troy Dargan who never got a game, Nikorima, O'Sullivan, Dearden who had to wait until he turned 18 to be eligible, Corey Paix (same) and that young kid who went to the Titans. Nikorima didn't want to be a backup hooker so was released & they ended up playing 3 hookers in their 17 for the semi against the eels. What do you expect when you play a second rower at centre against an ex-origin speedster and an obviously out of shape Milford at fullback where he's isolated and regularly out of position. Milford's line breaks often came from him ducking under lazy arm tackles and accelerating through but kick chasers don't do that. I think Griffin is being disengenuous as he was part of the problem before punted & replaced by the old opportunist Bennett who flunked a GF appearance in 2015 but then couldn't get them up again in the next 3 years. Seibold deserves an opportunity to put his stamp on a season with a few tweaks needed and some experienced players showing leadership. They need to trust those rookies in the backline that they've had for years like Shibasaki who's never been given a decent crack. They've blooded heaps of young forwards but ignored the backs except for Isaako, why isn't a decent backline defensive coach working with him & Oates to teach them how to read play for the cut out passes. Staggs looks bad in defence because he's doing his own defensive job plus Isaako's.

If we could get Cronk for one season he along would fix up the culture. He is not my style of footballer but he is the player we really need, even old and breaking down.

This season Bird looked busy in the centres before he was injured so put him back in there. Issako needs to get some confidence in defense again. Who is the defensive coach? Was Peter Ryan a consultant for the Broncos in preseason? Milf has the ability but he needs someone beside him who can settle general play. Get Milf the wall when he wants it and sees space. I think Milf way down on confidence. He is bumped out of the role he had previously played reasonably well in and pushed into a role he had not trained for. Milf is not a leader. He needs a general on the field with him. The desperation has not been with Brisbane all season. Watch back over the season and and observe how many times balls were left to bounce, other loose balls were not dived on and how many defenders gave up chases. Very few people can put their hand up and say they gave it everything this season.

I wasn't aware of the length of Seibold's contract. I just read that he has only completed ONE year of a 5 YEAR contract! And Darius Boyd still has TWO years to run on his contract of $800K a season and he said that he isn't going anywhere. The Broncos version of Gould's five-year plan... pain and more pain!   # Relegate Broncos to BRL and promote Redcliffe Dolphins!

It is Boyd's prerogative to see out his contract for next season and to see whether he triggers another one year via extension. He has been a wonderful player for the Broncos and in the NRL in general but time has caught up with him. I still think he is injured and has been for two seasons. The only other reason he is not putting his body on the line and not showing effort or is no longer making effective tackles can be that he is being coached to play in that manner. Boyd, is getting front of the ball player to slow their momentum but is not making ball and all tackles. Ball players bounce off him. I just hope he doesn't end his career in reggies. He will be well positioned with a career at the Broncos after football if he does fall on his sword and for his playing lagacy, I really hope he does that. If he chooses to play on, I hope we see him fit and getting back to some level of quality required for first grade.

Fullback is either Issako or Bird. Coates should start on the wing so Bird to me plays fullback or centre or we move him on and look at other options. Milf should be 5/8 and either Dearden or someone like Sam Scarlet who is killing it in the QRL should be half back. Turpin should be hooker and McCullock moved on as well. Segs as backup. Boyd plays QRL until he finds consistant form or retires. So a backline next year in my opinion should look something like 1. Issako 2. Oates 3. Staggs 4. Bird 5. Coates 6. Milf 7. Dearden/ Scarlet Not great still.
