Reports: Broncos players were at the pub prior to historic Eels loss

By The Roar / Editor

Damaging rumours have today been reported on Fox Sports, with the outlet claiming up to six Brisbane players were partying on Sydney’s Oxford Street on Saturday night.

Fox Sports‘ George Clarke reports that David Fifita, Payne Haas, Matt Gillett, Andrew McCullough, Anthony Milford and Corey Oates were all witnessed playing pokies at Harpoon Harry’s hotel in Surry Hills, although reports have stopped short of claiming any alcohol was consumed by the playing group.

The Broncos found themselves in the NRL history books for all the wrong reasons the following day, suffering a record 58-0 loss to Parramatta at Bankwest Stadium to end their season in horrid fashion.

Some of the accused parties were among Brisbane’s worst on a dark day. Oates, McCullough and Fifita committed four of the side’s seven handling errors between them, while Milford’s tackle efficiency of 62.5 per cent was the worst in the team.

Milford did, however, have one of the side’s paltry two line breaks and racked up 250 kicking metres with his backline under siege.

The Broncos have confirmed the reports, although they did claim no curfew was broken.

The Broncos "incident" again highlights the need for Clubs to introduce a players "Code Of Conduct". This Code would clearly set out what behaviours are expected of any player OFF THE FIELD. For example - "No Player shall enter ANY Licenced Premises within 4 Days (96 Hours) of ANY scheduled Game. To do so will incur a Monetary Fine - and cause that players Contract to come "Under Review". And who would the Players have to blame for such a harsh - draconian set of rules??

The thin white duke will fix him up just like he did with the Jet. He just needs a preseason training at 5/8 and he'll stop trying to catch the ball with his head and directing the opponents to the try line.

Nah - the club is well managed and run at board level. Always has been. Seibold coaches a team with a roster of medium overall quality to a mid ladder result. Bellamy, Bennett and Hasler couldn’t have got a team with that spine to a top 4 finish. Tricky draw too. The weakness is in the spine and in the on field leadership. They need a new captain and an on field game manager.

Bird to take flight as well? Wasn't there an old musical "Bye Bye Birdie"? Can somebody tell me which games TPJ & Joe miss to serve their suspensions? If it is Round 1 next year Darius may be required after all.

Bye bye, Boyd'y! Just don't come to the Rabbitohs, PLEASE! ‘You’re not in the team for Round 1’: Broncos tell Boyd he’s not part of their future On a day of major upheaval at the Broncos, reports claim captain Darius Boyd has been told he won’t be in the side for round one in 2020 and is not part of their plans moving forward. https://www.foxsports.com.au/nrl/nrl-premiership/teams/broncos/darius-boyd-told-he-wont-play-round-one-jack-bird-cut-lose-in-broncos-upheaval/news-story/e6f40889170a96466f9dff2f8d11e0f8

The best thing for the Broncos would be to permanently lose half of the change room – show them the door. I have doubts about more management fixing the problem. They need players who care and not play like lost school boys.

Shame on these blokes for being human beings .... gee no alcohol, being respectful, no bad behaviour, not out overly late ..... just a group of six having a hit on the pokies. The nanny state these days drives me nuts. Bloody hell shut them away in their hotel rooms where they can sit up all night playing video games.

DOORMAN: What do you fellas have planned for tomorrow? PLAYERS: Not a lot. Just standing behind the goalposts watching Parramatta's conversion kicks.

Doorman at pub: "Welcome gentlemen, what are you after?" Players: "just killing time because we're stuck in a hotel room & can't get on the sauce, can't go to bed at 8pm, I'm not a kid" Doorman: "The pokies room is open, why not have a nice meal & donate to our business, but most importantly, gamble responsibly". Peter Beattie: "The Broncos players who attended the pub will be stood down until a full investigation has been carried out by our new ethics officer, PHIL Gould"

QUESTION: Hypothetically if Wayne was still in charge would this situation have occurred?

Superspud - yep Fergo and Duges was the first thing I thought of too. By all reports in both situations the players were well-mannered, not drunk and just passing some time (no, I wasn't there but if there was any smoke, the 'investigative journalists' would have surely told us about the fire). Certainly there's no place in professional sport for the behaviour of past days - where players exploits were rarely reported and, even then, usually in hushed admiring tones. But I think the current state is just a bit ridiculous, they went out for the evening, had dinner, apparently consumed no-alcohol and were home by 11. Does anyone seriously think this impacted on their performance?

It would be bad except that the Players who performed passably are the one's that stayed out. I have real concerns for David Fifita if he sat just playing Pokies by himself. This is a oneway trip to Gambling Addiction and Financial ruin, and someone from the Club and Elders within his community need to go and HELP him now before we see the Headlines in a few years.

Shopping at Harvey Norman should be considered Grade 11 reckless and referred straight to the judiciary.

Just a professional issue rather than behavioural but possibly someone with long term ties to the club should show the young guys how life turned out for the "next Alfie" in Brett Seymour who got caught up in the gambling bug when on big money at an early age. Precautionary tale!

Not from what I gather and from what Seibs is says, which is pretty close to this "too many in the club think they are training hard/Coaching well but are not putting in that final effort" from his post match interview. From what I gather, he's the hardest working coach 'ever' for the Broncs lol

Many have said Anthony Siebold has lost the Dressing Room. Maybe. But it can be got back. The players want discipline.. the young ones want someone to correct them, to show interest. There is obviously a poor Management Team in Place. There appears to be no captains on the field. They need 3 captains. Defence | Attack | Overall. For Defence pick Matt Gillett. For the other 2 they need to find. The rest of the Management Team is on the sidelines. They need a manager that runs the travel and run discipline while away with the Captains. The Coaches meetings discussing proposed tactics should include the Captains. As to the rest. They need to locate a new spine. Look to the UK. But don't jump in. They must be quality with a long term view. Kalyn Ponga?

You could afford to have a questionable preparation when your opposition were doing the same thing. Different if the opposition are getting 10 hours sleep, are well hydrated and committing to a routine that gives them the best chance at optimum performance. In this instance I don't have that big a concern with what has transpired. Adults can do (reasonably) what they like provided it won't effect performance on game day. The only question I would have is that if the coach had implemented a team curfew and these players ignored it. Then there is a problem for the club with the players lack of respect for the coach and his rules (regardless of if the rule is fair or not). That part of the story sems a little unclear at the moment.

Unprofessional, not a good look, take your pick. Nothing serious, but clearly there minds werent on the game and it showed. They had a 7am team meeting and were out till late on the pokies.
