Wallabies DIY Player Ratings versus Fiji: The results

By The Roar / Editor

The Wallabies have come away with a victory in their opening Rugby World Cup match, coming from behind to beat a gallant Fiji at the Sapporo Dome.

Yesterday, we asked you to rate the Wallabies, and today, we have the results.

While no one was rated as having an outstanding game for the Wallabies, there were fairly consistent scores right across the board, with four players scoring an average rating of seven.

Michael Hooper led the way with 7.4, while Tolu Latu, Marika Koroibete and Will Genia off the bench were the other players to score north of seven.

Kurtley Beale had the lowest score of the 15 in the starting side with just 3.76 as his average, while all other players were in the four to six range, indicating the comeback nature of the performance from the Wallabies, which certainly wasn’t as good as some fans might have been expecting.

I wouldn’t say it in those words Bobbles but yes Quade Cooper is our best 10 in my view. A very smart player, with flaws, but very smart. CLL comes close but is as brittle. Foley is not as brittle but is blunt, and not a traditional playmaker. Cooper would play well behind the quality tight five we have now. Not using Quade to unleash Folau, Kerevi, Koroibete or another of the other wide speedsters and finishers over the last 3 years has been a limitation on our game. As is this cup. Cheika went ABC and that limited thought leaves us with one genuine wing, and numerous non wings, and selection of ‘creatives’ in the 15 when bench would be wiser for them. Best I stop there. Other ABC’s will be commenting now. I’ve given them enough to play with.

You don't need data as they are the same as stats.. right? You said you watched the game and don't need stats to form an opinion on a player? You know any top tier player should have caught that pass. No data or stats needed for that one? riiiight? I will say one thing, you do not need stats to see how poor KB is. But he can stay and we will just punt our best go forward player in the team. Good one.

If you have JOC at 12 is TK going to do what Kerevi did.Make the hard yards? JOC can't. Leave the 12 13 as is. You blokes want a 15th centre combination?.That is how many we would have had since the Clown took over.

Ken CLL is ok, but we all know QC is the best traditional 10 we have.Look how terrible the Wallabies are when it gets to our 10. Foley also should be nowhere near the 31 man squad. He is a Clown pick as is Dempsey.

should have been caught by a professional rugby player Really? What's the stats on that? You have one, surely? There are two types of people in the world. Those who can extrapolate from incomplete data.

Stats, no not much time for them. I've spent hours in court listening to expert economist and scientists argue, on oath, that the same data points to polar opposite conclusions. As to rugby, it's played on a field, not a spreadsheet. If it was all about stats, any nupty could be a selector.

Lies, dam lies and statistics. JOC should be 12. Looked better there. Can put players away. Fabulous hands great passing. Still the most talented player in the team,

Maybe this is the wrong thread to make this comment on, but . . . where are the Roarers scrambling to apologize after claiming the Wallabies only ever have a plan A and can't/won't/don't change strategy when plan A isn't working?

Sounds like a reason to play O'Connor at 12 in attack and Kerevi at 12 in defence. I didn't notice it either.

Just a small aside on Hooper's try, Zenn. As good and determined as he was I don't think he would have made it across the line without the last minute support of Rodda. In fact Hooper mentioned this himself post match.

i am biased but i would like hunt to be in the squad No that's just good old common sense, riddler! Quality all-rounder and big match player. Yep JOC's been doing a lot of distributing, and doing a good job of it I reckon. Has good vision and hands.

i am biased but i would like hunt to be in the squad. samu is a very good player but we will need a distributor at the squeaky end. one article i read said that joc and samu changed positions on attack in the second half. have to admit i didn't notice it off set piece play. off phase play yes, joc even stepped into first receiver which is great. having various playmakers in a backline is superb.

huge generalisation. some extremely knowledgable commentators up north. i would say on balance, more quality up this way than down south. there are some great ones down south but overall the standard below ordinary. maloney, mitchell, hoiles??? please.

Relevant ratings from Rugby pass 6 David Pocock: He showed just how valuable he is to the Wallabies – making nine tackles and winning four turnovers (including a couple of penalties). Was penalised on occasion when pushing the envelope at the breakdown. 7/10 2 Tolu Latu: The most productive of the Wallaby forwards – 10 carries, making all his tackles and being accurate in the set pieces. Add in his two tries – albeit a couple of armchair rides – and he is good value for his Man of the Match award. 8/10 7 Michael Hooper (captain): Was busy, as usual, with 15 carries and making all but one of his tackles. Satisfactory day at the office. 6/10
