AFL trade news: Tim Kelly, Eddie Betts, Mason Cox and more

By Stirling Coates / Editor

While the fourth day of the 2019 AFL trade period may not have had a large number of trades, we did see one of the biggest birds fly the nest with Tim Kelly finalising his long-awaited move to West Coast on Wednesday.

Kelly, who unsuccessfully requested a trade to the Eagles last season, finally got his wish as Geelong and West Coast agreed on a deal that sees the 25-year-old star midfielder get to Perth to be closer to family.

In the end, it proved to be a somewhat complex three-way trade that saw Essendon improve their hand in the second round of this year’s draft as well.

The Cats received picks and 24 from the Eagles, alongside their 2020 first-round selection, while also securing pick 37 from the Bombers. West Coast locked in Kelly, while also getting Geelong’s third-round pick next season and pick 52 from Essendon, who walked away from the deal with picks 33 and 57.

Kelly, who finished fifth in this year’s Brownlow medal count, then locked in a six-year contract with the Eagles worth approximately $5 million.

But any hopes fans had that this monster trade would be the one to get the wheels turning on the trade period were soon disappointed, with Geelong list manager Stephen Wells claiming his club and St Kilda were some ways apart on working out a deal to get Jack Steven to Kardinia Park – the trade many saw as the second domino.

While Wells didn’t elaborate, it appears the Cats and Saints disagree on Steven’s value. The 29-year-old is a four-time best-and-fairest winner with St Kilda, the most recent being in 2018, but struggled with mental health issues throughout this season and only played seven games, while averaging under 20 disposals per game for the first time since 2011.

It’s been widely speculated a second-round draft pick would be enough to get Steven over, with that pick then setting up Zak Jones’ requested move from the Sydney Swans to the Saints. Whether St Kilda believe Steven is worth more, or whether the Cats aren’t prepared to offer that much, is yet to be revealed.

The only other trade that looked like happening was the return of Eddie Betts from Adelaide to Carlton, with The Herald-Sun reporting the clubs had agreed on a deal that would get the four-time goal of the year winner back to Princes Park in exchange for Pick 47.

But that deal stalled at the last minute as the clubs were reportedly yet to work out what portion of the 33-year-old’s salary would be paid by which party next season. It appears the compensation the Crows will receive will be directly tied to how much of his contract they absorb in 2020.

Earlier in the day it was American Mason Cox making the headlines following yesterday’s bombshell that Essendon had approached Collingwood about acquiring the big man for cover should Joe Daniher depart for Sydney.

Essendon list manager Adrian Dodoro came out early this morning and dismissed the report, but The Age’s Sam McClure dug in and insisted his scoop was correct. The plot thickened when it was reported that Collingwood had actually approached the Bombers over the deal, trying to offload Cox’s salary, before it took a turn for the bizarre when Cox himself dismissed all the speculation as fake news on Twitter in a hastily-deleted tweet.

The Magpies are facing contract armageddon next season, with Brodie Grundy, Jordan de Goey, Darcy Moore, Scott Pendlebury, Brody Mihocek and others all coming off contract at the end of the year, so looking at potential salary dumps seems likely – watch this space.

Another club facing a contract headache next season is Greater Western Sydney, and it may have been made worse today after Jeremy Cameron’s manager revealed today the Coleman medalist was content to wait until the end of 2020 before starting contract negotiations.

Other details to emerge over the course of the day were the revelations that Port Adelaide were encouraging Dougal Howard to seek a trade, rather than the 23-year-old requesting one. There is reportedly disagreement at Alberton over which end of the ground he’s best suited to play at.

Fremantle and Sydney both eased off in their pursuits of North Melbourne’s Mason Wood, with the young forward’s existing contract reportedly worth much more than either club was willing to pay him.

Greater Western Sydney’s Aidan Bonar is also reportedly seeking a move to Victoria in search of greater opportunities.

This is fair for both clubs. West Coast get a proven gun and give up picks, but they are only just average when recruiting (Clayton will improve them). Geelong lose Kelly and get the picks, which is good for them as they have Stephen Wells (elite) and his team of recruiters. Next time they have to negotiate they will both be fairly confident that the other mob are not going to screw them over. What club would be wanting to negotiate with Fremantle these days?

Who would like to talk with Fremantle at this time? Even Saint Kilda don't want to talk to Freo. The smartest thing Kelly did was not talk to Fremantle at all - and he didn't have to. Smart move - Freo could not properly assess him or his intentions nor get him to do a medical etc.

This was a Goldilocks deal - about right. The important thing with negotians is fairness, because there will be future dealings between these clubs. Compare the Fremantle St Kilda negotions on Bradley Hill. Geelong is lucky to have a gun recruiter, while the Eagles have now managed to get hold of a top operator in Clayton. The real issue for the Eagles is that they could have rookie listed Kelly the year before Geelong picked him. Almost as bad as ignoring an obvious star in Patrick Cripps when they could have selected him. With Kelly, both negotiators should be content with the outcome.

No. AA are selected by a handful of AFL mates over a beer or 6. Lachie Neale didn't get picked until this year.

There's a lot more than that. You haven't looked at the other 664 players. You can probably add 40 to 50 more. I could easily list that many. GWS alone would furnish you with 6 or 7. An academic A is usually the top 15%. That's 99 players.

He may have 4 x Club B&F's but that is for an usuccessful club devoid of stars. He has 0 x All Australians which I'd argue are a better qualifier for A-Grade status

Geelong is usually too easy to deal with, glad both sides came out with what they wanted. Top 10 pick would have been nice but in an even draft after the top 2, which will both be at GC, its not worth drawing it out for a couple places.

"Those picks don’t add up to a gun player ..." Who knows what they add up to. No one thought Kelly was gonna be a 'gun player' when he was picked at #24.

Stirling - why is it bad news for GWS that Cameron is waiting until next year to start contract negotiations?

OK Nolzie i will do that for you. You are more level headed than a couple of your eagle fans. A bit of stir more than anything, some get into name calling rages. Accusing me of being salty is a joke, not you but look at a couple who don't respect Jack Steven is it because of the deal ? this bloke will be even better at Geelong. That is being salty.......Anyway all the the best next year your new recruit is best 5 in the competition.

Hill (or Langdon) staying could be the surprise of the trade period. Mind you, The Saints' $900k for 5 years is a good reason to leave your mates. Freo won't be giving any change on a #6 pick. Might even ask for some parking money.

I think any player who's going there in search of on-field minutes would feel comfortable of getting plenty, based on the current state of their list

So if he was a Victorian going home you’d want him to talk to a dozen clubs or face draft tampering charges. Simoc, That’s exactly what Papley has done, Nominated a club as his preferred and then said he’s willing to chat to all Vic clubs.
