Reports: Manly set to lock up Trbojevic brothers

By Scott Bailey / Wire

Manly are set to secure the long-term futures of Jake and Tom Trbojevic after tabling offers that will keep them at the NRL club until the end of 2026.

Manly are set to re-sign superstar brothers Tom and Jake Trbojevic on deals that will allow the Sea Eagles to build their NRL fortunes around the pair for the next seven years.

The Sea Eagles met with representatives for the siblings on Wednesday and ramped up their pursuit, tabling an offer worth around $12 million combined to keep them at the club until the end of 2026.

It marks the first time Manly have lodged an official offer in the negotiations for 2021 and beyond.

The representative stars are expected to agree to the terms, given they have long stated their desire to remain at their junior club.

It will also ensure they can play at least the majority of their careers together, after Jake detailed fears last weekend that wouldn’t be the case.

Off contract at the end of next year, they would have been at the top of numerous rivals’ wish lists for 2021 when they became open to outside offers on Friday.

It’s also likely they would have commanded more money elsewhere, with one report last week suggesting Canterbury were ready to throw $2.5 million a year at the pair.

But Manly have swooped just in time, after chairman Scott Penn declared this week they would do everything in their power to keep them as one-club players.

Fullback Tom is one of the most exciting players in the game at 23, having scored 44 tries in 89 games since his debut in 2015.

Jake is meanwhile the heart and spirit of the Sea Eagles, acting as a ball-playing lock who is teak tough through the middle.

Now 25, he will be 32 at the end of the deal.

The Sea Eagles also have halfback and captain Daly Cherry-Evans locked in until the end of 2023, meaning the core of their side is now secure long-term.

I think so. Noel Cleal is one of the best talent scouts around.

You make the northern beaches sound like Chicago in the roaring twenties and the players like Capone’s crew. Having lived there for most of my life and having had a fairly long time commercial involvement with the team, I’m bemused by this assertion. All teams have had some issues with player behaviour and Manly aren’t immune from that but to suggest their problems are worse is not supported by fact

I agree , guilt like innocence requires proof not speculative deduction based on prejudices

"Manly set to lock up Trbojevic brothers". Not a great headline given other recent events, I think. Happy that the Turbos stay with the Club though. It would seem strange for them to be playing in another team's colours

Exactly... which is why the first poster probably shouldn't have claimed the charge was trumped up.

No one needs evidence to cast aspersions true. So what point does it serve?

I don't need evidence, I didn't say it was a fact. I just said that is what I would bet to be the case.

These two are a great asset to the club in every way you can imagine and it will be great to watch them over the next few years. It's going to be hard to keep some of the young players coming thru the ranks but Manly have a pretty good track record in keeping the right ones and hopefully this can continue. If we run the risk of losing a player or two in a couple of years time then there would be no harm in signing them to a deal which bumps up when DCE's contract expires. Injuries will now be a key factor as Turbo has had his fair share and DCE is getting on a bit. I wouldn't mind if Disco Des rested DCE and Jurbo more in the future even during any games which are already won or lost and after SOO if it's possible. Des has apparently had a new hip inserted into his aging body and hopefully he's doing well.

So Hooper was wrong again? I think even Manly haters are happy for these guys to stay at Manly. Better for them and better for the future of the game on the Northern Beaches where on and off field role models have been few and far between.

I am willing to bet that over the years of the crimes/misdemeanors/incidents involving Manly players past and present that have occurred within the Northern Beaches region, more have been covered up, swept under the carpet and/or turned a blind eye to, than trumped up..

Yeah for sure But just because Melbourne have done it well, doesn’t make it easy. Melbourne have had excellent talent identification and development. They constantly have high quality, low budget players coming into their team and turn them over for the next quality, low budget player to cone through. Does Manly have the same things in place? Maybe, I don’t know. Hasler has made an absolute mess of the salary cap in both his previous jobs. Anyway, I don’t really want to rain on the Manly parade. Once confirmed, it’s great news that they’ve signed the bros.

Well apparently Melbourne have been able to manage the same situation for quite a number of years with their big3

Lots of rumours around that the Dogs were tabling offers. While I’d love to see them in blue and white, they belong at Manly and it’s better for the game that they are It’s great for Manly to have DCE and the Turbos locked up but one concern might be that they have $3.3M per season tied up in just three players. That leaves $6.1M for the other 27 in the squad That’s only an average of 225K per player per season. That doesn’t get you much when you consider the league minimum is 120K Even if they have 13 players in their squad on the 120K minimum that’s 1.56M which leaves 4.54 for the remaining 14 players, which is an average of 324K It’s a good move for Manly to have these three secured but not completely without risk.

I hope this news is true. Its obvious both brothers want to stay at Manly not to mention coming up through the system there so Manly deserve to keep them. I think this if true is great news for the club and its fans and NRL in general as having clubs keep players long term I think is really good for the fanbase.

That's great news. I would really hate them to go somewhere else. They are both top shelf. Good luck to Manly.
