Who should take over as the next Wallabies coach?

By The Roar / Editor

Much to the relief of certain sections of the Australian rugby fandom, Michael Cheika handed in his notice at the end of the Rugby World Cup.

His departure ushers in a new era at the Wallabies, with several big names finding themselves in the rumour mill for Cheika’s replacement.

With the latest chapter of Australian rugby one of the darker ones, the next appointment will be one of the most important ones in Wallabies history. It’ll be as much about selling hope to suffering Wallabies fans as it will be about making the best appointment.

So, which of the rumoured replacements are a smart choice? Who should Rugby Australia avoid? Who isn’t actually in the running despite being amongst the rumours?

Eddie Jones? Dave Rennie? Or someone else entirely?

We got Roar rugby expert Geoff Parkes on the Game of Codes podcast to comb through the candidates and make a call on who the smart choices are and, ultimately, who should take the reins in 2020.

and all of us here on the West Island, we'd be happy if you didn't the end- just for a little while which is all it would be as the ABs will find a way to get the planets back into alignment.

Wayne Smith has already stated when he stepped down as AB assistant coach that he would never coach against the All Blacks

With all due respect to Geoff and whatever analyzes he provides. The answer to the Wallabies dilemma is much more complex than reading tea leaves. The model used at this time is outdated, yet no one has the inner craving to address change, with the two big antagonists (NSW & Qland) NZ’s approach was much more pragmatic and the centralized system they adopted continues to deliver results. The RU reiterated that such a system would not be work in this country but hell, nothing appears to be working at this time. Without talking personalities, the fact remains, nothing breathes new life into any venture like success. In my opinion, what world renounced coach would be interested in joining this dysfunctional rabble, who will never win the chocolates. Cheika was the most divisive coach the code has endured for many years, yet he received a contract extension, he managed to obtain unwarranted favourable financial incentives for certain players, during his tenure, he alienated numerous credible players, he became extremely deficient with team selections and on field strategies. According to the caption the Wallabies played their best rugby on the training track. Now, after this extended period in the twilight zone, the light bulb has been turned on, he is no-longer the flavor of the month. Unfortunately, regardless of younger talent been recognized, unless big fundamental change are addressed, no worthy coach has the ability to revolutionize, the stale air that keeps decaying this great game at all levels.

Too old and susceptible to putting his foot in his mouth thus costing his employer, some considerable funding, fighting off opposing lawyers.

Saw that even Doran at Fox agrees. He picked 16 Anglos out of 23 for RWC 2023 !

You may see a shrinking of PI heritage lads, moving forward ! IF I was a bookie, I'd offer odds of 500 to 1, against him !

Come on Gary, we have had really only ONE clown. There may have been nepotism, and all sorts of incestuous goings on, but, only ONE clown. So be fair.

Do you think he would be at all interested though? I really didn't like a lot about Cheika's tenure but one thing that I had no objection about and that was, there was no lack of heart and soul. That said, it can get in the way, but my point is Aussie coaches would want to leave a legacy that went beyond the team and influenced Australian rugby in lasting way.

" He won the challenge cup, the second tier of the European cup. Hardly a huge coaching achievement " to play among the next best teams in europe and win is not an achievement ? maybe u dont know thaat some of the teams who lose in the Champions league also get a second bite in challenge cup ? AND maybe u dont know that the current Challenge cup holders happens to be CLEARMONT who beat LAROCHELLE in the final !! DUH

Care to examine the Rugby Players whose careers have been restarted. Fardy is a classic example, not good enough to play for the Wallabies finished 2nd in European ratings... MC showed poor judgement and bias. AB's rated him big time..serious mongrel..

Yeah, we need to get the IP. The one exception would be if Wayne Smith wanted to be involved as an assistant :silly:

Love to see Laurie involved whether we have a Kiwi head coach or not. Defence and attack should be Aussies as well. If we have Kiwi as top man he will move on at some point. So at the very least we need the support staff to all be aussies, otherwise I would consider it an opportunity missed.

Whoever is going to be the most miffed to miss out on the ABs gig would be worth a look- what a way to tell the ABs they picked the wrong bloke than by turning around the Wallabies game.

Is that inside info TWAS. I don’t underestimate RA leadership, the insanely stupid is not beyond them - this includes decisions like appointing Graham, schedule a test at the SCG, axing the NRC...
