Booze brothers punished by Carlton

By News / Wire

Carlton brothers Jack and Ben Silvagni have been disciplined by the AFL team’s leadership group for drinking while recovering from injuries.

The pair were sent to the Blues’ VFL team, where they had to help out the coaches in training sessions, for breaches of team rules on alcohol for drinking at a music concert on the weekend of November 23-24, according to a report in the The Age.

Jack Silvagni, the 21-year-old elder brother, had to attend four sessions at the Northern Blues, while Ben, a first-year player last season, had to attend only two.

The leadership group, headed by Patrick Cripps and Sam Docherty, took the view that Jack would have a heavier penalty because he had been drinking while injured once before and this was Ben’s first offence.

It is standard practice for clubs to discipline players for drinking while in recovery from injury, on the grounds that it can compromise recovery.

Sources said that Jack Silvagni, whose significant progress in his fourth season saw him rewarded with a two-year contract extension, had consumed alcohol while out with his partner – about three drinks – but was home by about 9pm.

The leadership group – Cripps, Docherty, Marc Murphy, Ed Curnow and Kade Simpson – spoke directly to both of the brothers, who have been in full training since they were disciplined.

The penalty was entirely in the hands of the leadership group.

But it was a case of seperate standards causing issues creating a attitude of entitled behaviour. Carlton have standards they expect all to abide by including Cripps etc so bad luck boys you're on charge of your own behaviour especially when you know the rules.

Consuming a modest amount of a perfectly legal substance within a social setting amongst friends is hardly comparable to the behaviour of Gardiner and Cousins.

I'm against the they've got to live argument col, those boys had 10 weeks to live clubs are certainly within their rights to expect professional behaviour when their training again, often hear they have short careers so really their attitude should be make every post a winner especially when you're a fringe player.

Pete, it was against club policy to drink while in rehab - the same as all teams. If you had a medical condition or injury and your doctor told you not to drink alcohol, would you?

That's certainly not 2 a week. You took 4 days to work out that response? Soggy lettuce, Macca.

2 a week? "No commitment to the club at all." - 2019 - Langdon & Hill 2018 - Neale 2017 - Weller, Crozier, Balic In the same period the blues have lost Phillips in 2019 and Gibbs in 2017. Which team has a commitment issue from players?

They seem to be 2 a week. That's the issue. No commitment to the club at all. Probably because the club has so many rumblings within. Pulling in different directions. Poor Carlton.

Perhaps the blues crack down on these minor incidents so they don't end up with players exposing themselves in public, drunkenly interrupting second tier 3/4 time addresses or getting themselves kicked of planes. While you are here, do we know how Hogan managed to flip his car in a 60 zone?

Absolute madness - 3 drinks and home before 9pm - was this a wiggles concert? People working at the AFL have 3 drinks before 9am.

'had consumed alcohol while out with his partner – about three drinks – but was home by about 9pm'. So he was okay to drive home if he had held a full licence, I think the Carlton leaders are trying to set the example of commitment to improving by being discipline in every way, no harm done.

Drinking might make bruising type injuries worse in the immediate after-match of a match, but a drinking ban will have no effect on ligament, hamstring , shoulder or any other damage which is not muscular. Its absurd to suspend grown men for having a few drinks at a concert 4 months before the season even starts. If they miss training, sure, they get a sanction, anything else is nanny state madness.

So Jack has done this before, does it again and all he has to do is go slum it at Northern Blues training for 4 times? Talk about being flogged by wet lettuce. bad case of the Aishs these silvagnis. A famous name apparently lets you do whatever you like, go drinking, slag the club off on twitter for sacking your dad...
