Foster officially unveils new set of All Blacks assistants

By Daniel Gilhooly / Wire

Hurricanes head coach John Plumtree is a key appointment among three men confirmed as assistants to new All Blacks coach Ian Foster.

New Zealand rugby coach Ian Foster believes he has the right band of lieutenants with him to take the All Blacks to a new level.

Three of Foster’s four assistants were unveiled on Thursday, including experienced Hurricanes head coach John Plumtree.

Scott McLeod and scrum specialist Greg Feek are the other two.

The fourth assistant will be Brad Mooar, as long as New Zealand rugby can successfully negotiate a release from UK outfit Scarlets.

Former Crusaders coach Mooar became coach of the Welsh province this year.

Since his announcement last week as the replacement for Steve Hansen, former All Blacks assistant Foster has spent time finalising his coaching staff.

All have joined Foster on two-year contracts.

And he believes they have the right blend to be successful in the wake of their disappointing third-placing at the Rugby World Cup in Japan.

“They’re all outstanding coaches in their own right, and we’ll have new voices and fresh ideas in the All Blacks, which will be really stimulating for everyone, and help us grow as we enter a new era,” Foster told reporters.

“We’ve been able to get some skill sets that are going to be vital in helping where the All Blacks go in a number of areas.”

Foster has ensured some continuity by retaining McLeod, who will keep hold of the defence portfolio he has owned for the past two years.

He has also convinced former All Blacks great Grant Fox to stay on as a selector for at least one more year.

A key introduction is that of the well-travelled Plumtree, who will join Foster and Fox on the three-man selection panel and will take charge of the forwards.

The 54-year-old has held jobs in Wales (Swansea 1997-2001), South Africa (Sharks 2008-12) and Ireland (national team forwards coach 2013-14).

Plumtree was the Hurricanes assistant for four years, helping them win a maiden title in 2016, before taking the top job last season.

“I really felt that this team needs another head coach with experience and John’s got a lot of that,” Foster said.

Former All Blacks prop Feek, 44, has spent the past eight years in Ireland, much of it as the national team’s scrum coach.

He replaces the long-serving Mike Cron.

Newly-appointed NZ Rugby chief executive Mark Robinson said a strong assistant coaching group was one reason for Foster’s appointment – seeing off the challenge of Crusaders head coach Scott Robertson.

Can't help but think we have too many Chiefs and not enough Indians in coaching now. The Wayne Smith/ Tony Brown roles are rare. If we lined up our best coaches who are in professional roles and picked the best for each role thats required these days it would look nothing like Fozzies lineup. So that automatically tells you that like our players going and leaving gaps, so are our coaches and the huge combined impact of all that is going to continue to serve against us. We are producing IP and talent of such quality now that we are exporting far more than we are retaining. and for the sake of our own game lets just hope others catch on a little quicker than they are in producing their own. They are from a players perspective, but far from it from a coaching perspective. Our template on how we play is such now that why invest so much in one player when you can get a coach in to produce 20 or 30 of them? Blokes like Schmidt who has changed the face of Irish rugby 'across Ireland' has proved far more valuable than any single player.

There is only one person that could possibly claim the title 'next Wayne Smith' and that is Tony Brown.

Jacinta could coach the All Blacks. Just as the best golfers and tennis players don’t win every week ; Nor do the ABs , but they do mostly.

That’s an interesting take on things. Let’s agree to disagree.

like who cruden? he was seen as an future star and was coached at the nz academy by Grant fox and Jeff Wilson long before Rennie got his hands on him, you aussies like to say the abs won the 2015 world cup because of Wayne Smith even though foster was the attack coach, but you go awfully silent when it's mentioned that the cheifs only won titles because of Smith and Rennie couldn't win without him

You do realise most of the stars in the Chiefs only became stars after Rennie started coaching them?

He was able to recruit certain players provided they weren’t prioritised by other franchises. If Cruden and Retallick were sure things, why didn’t other teams lock them in?

nz super rugby didn't go to the centralized system till Rennies first year in charge of the cheifs, meaning he could call in players like cruden, SBW and Brodie and coaches like Smith, Foster had a small group of players to choose from and some unheard of assistants at his time at the cheifs, a lot of top rugby people in nz think he would of taken the cheifs all the way under the centralized system that Rennie benefited from

But did that coincide with roster change? Without Smith they were still a much better team than pre-Rennie.

Best of luck Stu and co. Some sensible appointments. And while I fervently hope you prove me wrong I'm picking this will be as short a tenure as the contract suggests...

All true Train. But the fact remains that, like his departure from the All Blacks, Smith left a hole that even Rennie struggled to fill. They made the finals but they were not the same team without Smith's involvement. Dave Rennie is astute and a sensible placement by RA but the assistants are a massive part of the menu and none of them compare to Wayne Smith...

The Chiefs made the finals twice in their existence before Rennie. They made finals every year under Rennie. Glasgow have built back up to a grand final team under Rennie after missing finals before he started. Since he started at the Chiefs his record has been teams being better than before he arrived.
