Reports: Hyundai to end A-League sponsorship

By The Roar / Editor

The A-League is set to receive a massive sponsorship blow at the end of this season, according to the Sydney Morning Herald, with major partner Hyundai set to end their 15-year relationship with the competition.

The Korean car manufacturer has been the naming rights sponsor of the A-League since its inception but, according to Fairfax’s Dominic Bossi, is not interested in renewing the $6 million per year agreement when it expires in June. Tough conditions in the automobile industry, a dip in public interest in the competition and the mass uncertainty as to a TV deal beyond this season are reportedly factors in Hyundai’s decision.

While the league is attempting to negotiate a one-year extension, reports indicate they will likely need to scramble to find a new major sponsor for the 2020-21 season and beyond. Tellingly, clubs have reportedly been told not to incorporate the Hyundai logo on any jersey concepts for future seasons.

The loss of such a major partner, in addition to potentially losing Fox Sports’ TV money next season, presents the soon-to-be independent A-League with significant challenges.

Speaking to The Herald, neither party was keen to give anything away. Bill Thomas, Hyundai’s marketing director, said the company was “not in a position” to provide any information about their current discussions with the A-League and that their plans would be announced “at the appropriate time”.

An FFA spokesman also told The Herald that the body was “not in a position to provide any specific comment”.

CF will not become an administrator. CF is a critic and commentator on the game, I do not believe he will expose himself to what he already does.

You can't be sure about that, no one can. I'd say they are a good chance of replacing Hyundai.

anon all that is true, but we're entitled to get a bit of positive news every now and then, all we hear these days are negative stories, it can't all be bad

And on that, Post_hoc, the rivalry with Sydney FC will be good, but will be amazing against the Wanderers, should sell out Campbelltown Stadium when WSW go to play there and get a good crowd at Bankwest as well. For the sake of the A-League, I wish all Sydney clubs would do well, even though I dislike Sydney FC (they have a great logo though).

I do think Western United has potential, but I don't understand why they wouldn't have started construction on their stadium until they could play matches there. I get it they probably would've need the licence before they could start building, but couldn't they have just let them enter say in 2021 or whenever their stadium is meant to start? Or, why not just play at Knights Stadium and create a good relationship with one of the best NPLVIC clubs. Has a great 3,000 seat grandstand and with the 6-7k they get at their games, it would create a good atmosphere, and probably would cost less to hire from the Knights.

He made some good points. It's not up to you to decide what should or should not be censored. This isn't a site that exists to simply promote the A-League. It's here to allow us to discuss sport -- positives and negatives included.

The A-League won't be able to replace Hyundai though.

Macarthur is a football heartland and they'll have the advantage of playing all of their matches at a rectangular stadium that's close to rail, unlike Western United who are playing at three oval grounds in three different cities. They'll also get a big publicity boost from their pre-season friendly against Juventus. Macarthur FC have already passed Western United on Facebook and that's before they've even started a season. If they can get close to 10,000 crowds that's a pretty big achievement and I hope they do well. - FACEBOOK FOLLOWERS Macarthur FC = 20,157 Western United = 16,427 AVERAGE ATTENDANCE Western United = 6,176

I can't see the VAR being removed. And trying to link that to reduced attendances is a very long bow to draw - hasn't happened overseas has it? International breaks - would probably be easier to deal with if the season returned to winter wouldn't it? If they're going to persist with playing in summer, excellent point about playing games after 6pm. Better outcome for both players and spectators. Active support - I'd like to think that when the clubs take active control of the league this will happen ASAP. Salary cap - this has to stay for the financial security of the clubs. Left to their own devices most of them will be broke in 5 minutes. Transfer fees - sure. Although that might be tricky in light of the above point. Second division with promotion/relegation - hmmm, I'm not sure about this. I don't think we have enough good quality players (and club admin/infrastructure) for this to work. I wonder whether having a reserves comp might be worth doing though? It would essentially replace the Y-League as it's focus would be slighty different.

Not really Micko, I am an Adelaide United supporter since I live in Adelaide, however I do like what Macarthur FC are doing, they have set up extremely well and I am a foundation member of them. Western United should've been given a year quite frankly to set up the club, just as Macarthur are doing. Don't be surprised if the Bulls average 10k+ crowds in their first year.

AR is the typical internet tr_ll. Past 10 years, every day posting on a forum with the sole intention of annoying & disrupting those who want to engage in discussion about a topic. This is a person who is not happy with life & its only pleasure is to try to make other people unhappy.

There is no doubt the A-League is struggling at the present moment, no need to paint over that, it needs an overall, what that is, needs someone far smarter then myself, too many people with agendas within the sport. But don't feel sorry for us as a football fan, I go to SFC every week with my mates & while crowds & atmosphere getting smaller, I'm seeing some of the best football I have seen in Australian football for a very long time (up there with Ange's Roar) & enjoy a beer & a pie. I watched the Olyroos qualify for the Olympics, I can watch the Mathilda's try to also qualify for the Olympics, I was in Russia in 2018 watching the Socceroos in the world cup. I was in Europe last year & was in Lisbon watching Benifica in from of 40K, amazing atmosphere, London Olympic Stadium with 60K to watch West Ham. I watch the most watched sporting competitions in the PL, La Liga & Champions league every week in my house. So yes the A-League is struggling, but we as fans are still in there enjoying ourselves.

The Wanderers to their credit have done a great job in getting their ultras into line. No crowd trouble like the bad old days.
