Essendon concedes Daniher may miss first half of season

After his failed trade request to Sydney last October, key Essendon forward Joe Daniher could miss the first half of the AFL season with injury.

Joe Daniher’s wretched injury run continues with the disgruntled Essendon forward a chance to miss the first half of the AFL season.

After his failed trade request to Sydney last October, the 25-year-old has only just resumed running as he works his way back from groin problems.

Daniher said in November that frustration with injuries was the main reason for wanting a move north to the Swans.

He was an All-Australian and won the Bombers’ best-and-fairest in 2017, but has played just 11 games since.

Essendon football manager Dan Richardson said it was possible Daniher wouldn’t play until the second half of the season.

“It’s been a couple of years (of injuries) so it’s a hard one to gauge when he will be back into full training,” Richardson told SEN.

“As long as he continues to be pain-free and continues to progress, he may progress pretty quickly, but we’re not going to put any time on it.

“What we want to do is make sure that when he does come back his body is strong enough to support the rigours of the game.

“Joe is quite positive at the moment in the way it is progressing and so are we in our medical team.”

Daniher has kicked 188 goals for the Bombers in 104 games since being picked up as a father-son selection in the 2012 draft.

He led Essendon’s goal-kicking for four straight years from 2014-17.

Essendon and Sydney were unable to strike a deal for the contracted Daniher last trade period.

He was left out of Essendon’s leadership group when the Bombers announced their five-man group on Tuesday.

Dual best-and-fairest winner Zach Merrett and Daniher were both axed from the leadership group, while small forward Orazio Fantasia turned down an opportunity to be part of the team despite being voted in.

Daniher isn't playing football right now. Essendon could have traded in any person off the street and got the exact same result: a guy on the list who won't be playing football. If they had made a trade, maybe picked up Jenkins, maybe picked up a few new draftees, they would be in a better position than they are right now. That's the issue. When life gives you lemons, you make lemonaide. Dodoro got given lemons and declared he would only trade them for oranges even though nobody had any oranges. Now he's stuck with a bunch of lemons and it has started raining.

It is especially to do with the age demographic of the club -- that established players in the mid or early-mid career range are more important at present than draft picks. The draft picks offered would not have yielded a ready to go tall forward to replace Daniher and Essendon have limited options in that area.

Nope, no problem, quite the opposite, I enjoy Dons work. FWIW I disagree with the premise that Essendon did the right thing by keeping Joe. They would have been better off with the draft picks because I can't see them going deep into September, however I think down at Windy Hill they believe they're in a premiership window so they really had no choice but to keep him.

Agree. Who gives a flying …about your club song if you win the flag. Songs are largely the same chord sequences in different keys and rhythms. 1, 1V, V and all. The same chords can play hundreds of songs. As for Joey, it’s sad. Bombers should have let him go,

Do you have a problem with "a fit and firing Daniher will only help to grow our game and let us hope he gets his body right — that is what is important, not where he will be playing next year." That is what any genuine football supporter should wish for.

I love how we're all unanimously agreeing the Giants and Tigers have the best songs. Ughhhh that INXS bravado at Port games irritates me, although I'm probably in the minority for that opinion. Come to think of it it probably annoys me because I'm always very much in the minority in the crowds at AO during Port-Freo games which we generally lose :silly:

GWS song is great, Richmond's is great, everyone else's suck. I reckon Port should change it's song, ours is nearly as bad as Freo's, we could just do a straight switch to "never tear us apart" Anyone remember the mighty might bosstones, knock on wood? That would be a great team song if modified.

As much as I love that analogy, he's pretty good when he's firing.

Are you Don Freo's Essendon supporting doppelganger? There's some looking through black and red colored specs going on here.

Fair enough I've lived through having the worst song for over 30 years I doubt I'm worried either, I find it funny ppl get so worked up over bad songs sung out of tune ultimately.

What're the three you think are good? I'd go for GWS, Richmond and ... maybe the Saints (it's tacky but fun) or the Hawks (I genuinely quite like it).

All footy songs except 3 are bad so don't worry no one really has a leg to stand on lol, I'll still get an out of tune we're the Eagles regularly after our games :stoked:

They wouldn't need to because a trade would be done.

I don't believe the deal was in Sydney's interests, they were trying to do the best by Daniher and signalling to the AFL at large that they were a good club to deal with.

Just because I think it’s terrible doesn’t mean I’m upset :silly: Freo’s song ain’t much better (it’s probably worse) so I don’t have much of a leg to stand on here!
