NRL Round 1 teams: Latrell begins Souths career at fullback, no Cordner for Roosters

By The Roar / Editor

The first batch of squads for the 2020 season have been revealed, with the NRL Round 1 teams being announced ahead of Thursday’s season-opener at Bankwest Stadium.

Latrell Mitchell will officially begin his South Sydney Rabbitohs career at fullback, with the ex-Rooster being handed the no.1 jersey for the club’s Round 1 clash with Cronulla at ANZ Stadium on Saturday. The Sharks have named Josh Morris in the centres despite earlier reports he’s set for an immediate release to join the Roosters.

The Bulldogs have been forced to make two shock changes to their team ahead of their season-opening clash with Parramatta, after Corey Harawira-Naera and Jayden Okunbor were both stood down by the club over a code of conduct breach.

Meanwhile, the Roosters will be without skipper Boyd Cordner for Saturday night’s clash with Penrith due to an as-of-yet undisclosed injury.

Looking forward to some footy (and the wife has made plans to go out with her friends on Saturday night - so win/win!). I have to say though, some of these squads are quite underwhelming for Round 1. Either some fringe players have really improved or the depth of the league is already being tested. I certainly don't see where teams 17 and 18 come from when I see these starting sides for Rd 1 where there are minimal injuries.

Holmes yes,O'Neil and Hampton on the wing, not so fast. Hampton might be quick for a half but on the wing?

I hope Williame does well , he had an unfortunate run at the Eagles but maybe a spell in England has helped with his confidence. Aitken looked the goods a few seasons back but he seems to have slowly gone backwards.

I don't get that , 'the Cows look slow'. O'Neill, Holmes, Drinkwater, Hampton. There is no lack of pace in that backline. The forwards, yeah , you guys are quicker, and I do think you have an edge there but there is not much between these sides.

As a Manly fan, I used to think Williame was bang average when he played for us. Hopefully for your sake he has improved in the Super league.

Who's goal kicking? Staggs I guess, he was good for Redcliffe. The Cows look slow as well, One team I think is not going to start the season well

So who is actually captaining the Broncos? Is Carrigan going to be the youngest NRL captain in some years or are they heading back to Darius?

It's taken a few years but Aitken has finally been dropped, although I'd argue Lafai also deserved to be dropped. Williame looks very likely and will make it hard for Aitken to get back in. This is good for the team competition for centre spots has been non existent for about 3 seasons
