Potential player boycott throws NRL return into doubt again

By The Roar / Editor

NRL players are once again the cause of uncertainty surrounding the competition’s return on May 28, although this time for entirely fair reasons.

The Sydney Morning Herald is reporting the Warriors are refusing to leave New Zealand until the NRL reveals how much it will pay players for the rest of the year, a stand-off which has been backed by their counterparts from other clubs. Cameron Smith is reportedly one of several “senior figures” who are supporting the stance.

The Rugby League Players Association was expecting a pay deal to be tabled by the NRL yesterday, as the governing body continues broadcast negotiations with Foxtel and Channel Nine.

If no deal is presented, the Warriors will remain in New Zealand while the rest of the competition’s players will boycott next Monday’s mandatory briefing before returning to training.

The stance clashes heavily with a directive to clubs issued by the NRL yesterday, which indicated no excuse for missing the mandatory briefing would be accepted.

Warriors boss Cameron George told NewsTalk ZB radio in Auckland (according to AAP) that the details surrounding player pay and accommodation for families were “non-negotiable” before they would board their flight to Tamworth.

“There’s no CEO in the world right now running any organisation asking 50 of his employees to relocate to another country without knowing what they will be paid or without family support or when they are coming back,” he said.

While no exemptions to allow the Warriors to enter Australia are yet to be granted by the federal and state governments, the NRL expects them to be given in the coming days.

But the side is understandably unwilling to travel across the Tasman and go through 14 days of isolation – just days after New Zealand eased their level 4 lockdown measures – with such uncertainty over the competition’s status.

Funny Rob . Wade Graham and Clint Newton RLPA members praised V'Landys for the work he has done and is doing on getting the comp up and running, organising the players' finances, liaising with Govt ,medical, bio security professionals.Yep all able to be easily finalised in 5 minutes. The boycott threat was again exaggerated by the media.

Placepunter Reading and hearing some of the journos’ stories, either claimed to be exaggerated or incorrect by the RLPA committee members, and indeed the players, one now understands where Trump’s fake news description came into being. The word boycott was apparently used according to our reliable press. Not quite. Wade Graham one of the RLPA committee confirmed as much today. Papers got to sell,Tvs got to dramatise.

Eddie Huh? The ARU and A League are having deep financials over the matter of COVID-19 and haven't booked in Tv deals for the future, the AFL despite having assets found the need to borrow $600m. They according to you must be happy as Larry LOL despite losing lots of money per day. " NRL Going down the gurgler" yet still paying their players 80% of their monies. And the Tv stations wanting to extend their contracts, and channel 9 wanting to buy the profitable NRL Digital Department .Foxtel ATM is losing subscriptions hand over foot and wants the NRL back ASAP. V'Landys is getting off his backside as he is known to do ,and wanting to limit the losses, as any businessmen with an accounting background would do.The players and clubs are backing him, and when the game gets up I have no doubt so will the fans. The other sports can sit back and chomp on popcorn, doing a zero like Nero while their codes' burn income. That's their choice. The only line of yours that is close to the mark, desperate times call for desperate measures. The rest is "you can't be serious" stuff.

Surely none of the coastal 1.5 cm shufflers who are doing their best to catch a dose of number 19 in late April would be up in arms about the NRL making moves to start up again in late May? Good thing they didn't spot any NRL players doing the shuffle.

Crosscoder Rugby League is just more desperate to start because the whole sport is losing lots of money per day and is going down the gurgler. All the other sports are sitting back with popcorn watching it happen. Desperate times calls for Desperate measures

Rob Other codes are looking at a starter ASAP. That someone has made an earlier goal, seems to have upset some. He's set a time, the clubs and officials can work toward it, with the chance it may be delayed. The fact other codes are still in no man's land and their fans have little idea , reflective of their management. V'Landys has had an expert(Professor) in viral diseases as a reference point to ensure they follow strict protocols. He will continue in that vein and each club will have an expert doing regular checks . He's got the Qld premier on board, allowing movement between NSW and Qld for players. He's got 20 rounds up plus finals and SOO to appease the fans and make the season at least colder to the mark in terms of games. The players are on board with 20 rounds. He's got the NZ Warriors ,given to the all clear to move into NSW. and station themselves at Tamworth and Scully Park. There are still negotiations re Tv monies to be pursued. And the 80% in writing to the players. I'll give him more than a passmark, with his bullish approach. The general population has no problem shuffling along the esplanades of the coastal strips ,in a congested non 1.5meter manner, no problem exercising in parks bumping into each other. The public is anxious to get out and about. If the early start had been introduced by another code, the silence would have been deafening.Particularly by one opinion writer ,who spends his waking hours bagging rugby league and its players.

So Big Daddy you trust the media implicitly? No embellishment of stories ? No journalistic licence? No errors? Saw news stories on the matter from 9/7 and 10, and TBH none formed a match with the other.Three variations.

Some players do walk away and some never fulfill their potential because of the pressures. One thing I like about the current Manly team is that I think just about all of them love playing the game and can't wait to get out there. The Turbos in particular and DCE as well are leading the way with their enjoyment of the game. Even Moses Suli looked like he was having a ball at the end of last season, coming from a disgruntled base perhaps.

I think many players hate playing professional sport for periods of their career but it becomes a job that pays to much to walk away from. I’m sure you have plenty of blokes simply looking at the dollars and supporters are at the bottom of their list of priorities.

I tend to agree with you Expat. Although my Aussie nephew has lived and worked in New York and now Indianapolis for quite some years. We stay in touch and he thinks that, while you're right, there is some awareness in some sporting USofA circles about RL. Mind you, he also tells me that the recent North American venture into league had hit some financial problems.

If you didn't have someone like V'landys pestering the various authorities, nothing would happen , as the various bureaucrats would sit around waiting for someone to make a move.

I was once let go when a business went into administration and the owners asked me and everyone else to keep working for free for a while to help them out. Funnily enough over half of us did while we were looking for other jobs.

At least he has people talking about the game and coming out the other side I suppose. I’ve probably seen to much of Trump talking which probably is why I have a negative attitude at present.

I can personally guarantee no Doctor is going camping ala LM JAC style ever. They can’t afford to carry on like tools and breaking rules. They would never get to even study medicine with that mentality.
