Crows investigate alleged training breach

By News / Wire

The AFL and Adelaide are investigating a potential breach of the league’s training protocols by a group of Crows players.

The Crows have 16 players quarantining for 14 days in a Barossa Valley resort – which is temporarily closed to the public – after they returned from interstate on Monday.

AFL players are only permitted to train in pairs to ensure teams are not disadvantaged by contrasting coronavirus regulations in different states.

The Crows said the players may have breached the rules by allegedly having a larger group, accompanied by an assistant coach who is also undergoing mandatory self-isolation, training together for part of a scheduled session on Thursday afternoon.

An AFL spokesperson confirmed it is investigating and said the league was “taking the matter very seriously”.

Crows head of football Adam Kelly said the club was investigating and liaising with the AFL.

“Players were told to complete any training in accordance with current AFL training protocols, which include not training in more than pairs and at all times maintaining social distancing, while staying at the facility,” Kelly said in a statement.

“It appears this may not have happened for the entirety of a skills session and we are in the process of gathering the facts and liaising with the AFL.”

In South Australia, it is legal to train in groups of ten people or less but, as Victorian players are still only able to train in pairs, the AFL has restricted training sessions to pairs to maintain a level playing field.

Pedro, they breached isolation rules. The police only permitted them to train in groups of 2, not 8. They admitted it, the police warned them, but didn't take it further. The AFL only penalised them for breaking the 2 person training rule. The only thing I could be wrong about is that they shouldn't be playing footy on the fairways, however I would be surprised to learn that a golf club allowed that.

No – you don’t know the ins and outs Richie … at all actually. They hired the golf course holes from the Golf Course! They had achieved approval from the State Government/police and the AFL to run the live-in (so as their billet families did not also have to self isolate). They trained in pairs but came together into an 8 at the end for a kicking drill (which is against the AFL rules, but not the law). For that indiscretion they have received a suspended sentence.

Nice try Peter. Richmond crushed Adelaide who couldn't respond to their pressure. GWS were a class below that is true. I am pretty confident we would have beaten Collingwood and it would have been nice to, but I will take the less satisfying victory over the Giants.

When you think about it Rich, the Tigers were lucky to come up against two insipid Grand Final opponents?

It just shows the media are really struggling without the footy.

Haha, yeah, totally fair. Such a dumb outcry about all of this saga.

True ad but the police gave them an exemption to train outdoors and considered the training in a group of eight snafu only worth a warning which indicates it was very minor in their eyes, they've broken the AFL rules no doubt but man I've never seen such outcry over non violated Sa laws as what's come from Vic media since they broke it. They've said draft picks, 100k fines and premiership points should be the punishment for something police consider to not be worth anymore than a warning it's really funny.

Not to mention the rest of their performance on Grand Final day.

If they weren’t in quarantine, Matti, they’d have been fine. But our laws are very strict, the 14-day quarantine negates any such law otherwise. I’m not sure about any such police exemptions they’d gotten but our 10 person law is for people *not* in the 14 day quarantine.

On the contrary Richie the Crows are ahead of the pack. The wide stance of 2017 was merely practicing social distancing way ahead of the rest of us.

You can't train in groups of 10 when you are in isolation. In fact you can't train in groups of 2 but for some reason the SA police have them an exemption to train in groups of 2 (Crows supporters?)

Come on Essence, they had police exemption to train in pairs not groups of 8 so they did mistakenly break the rules. If they didn’t break the rules then why is their coach Matthew Nicks gutted that they did. These are isolation rules, not rules for people who have not travelled back from overseas or interstate. What I am surprised about is why they were isolated in a group of 16 and not told by the club to go to where they live and isolate in their home. As for no- one outside of Melbourne caring about Carlton you again have made one of your silly comments. I live in Brisbane and I care about Carlton as do many others living in Qld, WA, SA, NSW, Tassie and the NT.

They didn't need the exemption for group of 8 as state law said training in groups of upto 10 has been ok since Sa shut their border. If they'd truly broken any laws in place then they'd have received much more than a warning, it does seem the only rules broken was the AFL rules and I've said they'll be dealt with accordingly which imo is a fine and suspended sentence as not much has been done

They didn't have police exemption to train in groups of 8. Otherwise why did they get a warning by police. Regardless, what is it with the AFC? Why do they keep messing up? Why are they so arrogant and selfish that they think they can do this and get away with it? Please no one tell me it was an innocent mistake. I just don't buy it.

They broke the AFL rules and will be dealt with accordingly they had a police exemption so did not break any state quarantine laws it's very simple , your very paranoid about SA and WA club supporters col especially as no one outside of Melbourne have cared about Carlton for 20 years.

What did that actually mean? Lol. Geez I haven't even given an opinion on Adelaide actions and you've jumped to a very conspiratorial conclusion, all I said was they haven't broken Sa law as they had an exemption but they have broken AFL rules which is the facts something for a realist you don't seem to good at understanding.

Well Ditto this is where I am confused. These players were in isolation because they had come into SA from other States. Sth. Australia’s Police Commissioner has stated that under the States Laws the players & Ben Hart should have remained isolated in their rooms and not ventured out. However I believe they were given special permission by the police to train on the proviso they were only in pairs. The Commissioner has said he believes it was an honest mistake that they were training in 2 groups of 8 and that they would provide the players and the club advice and education which is what the SA police have done for other people who have not complied with the isolation rules. I agree that that is all they should receive if the the Police are correct about it being an honest mistake. It will be interesting to see what action the AFL takes though as before this incident they advised clubs & coaches that any players breaching any COVID – 19 protocols face being suspended for the entire season. I believe that penalty is very harsh but I am pretty sure if any players from Victorian clubs breached the protocols then there would be a spike in comments, particularly from WA & SA supporters that they should be suspended for breaching the AFL rules.

If you're always looking at issues with the blinkered attitude that the AFL is evil, biased and always wrong then you will miss the real point of things which you seem to so often, 36. Although I personally don't think the Crows Players did too much wrong, but try looking at it from the AFLs perspective. They are trying extremely hard to get a season up and going and give Footy Fans what we love and so desperately need and the one thing that will totally derail that is a positive Covid case. It's the AFL's and each Clubs responsibility to provide their Employees with a safe workplace. If an infected Player or Staff Member then infects other Players or Staff then they would rightly have a claim against the AFL and Club, and quite obviously end any possibility of a 2020 Season. The AFL and the Clubs must therefore practice measures some would classify as extreme in order to mitigate any possible infections and or repercussions thereof. An open mind allows for enlightenment, 36. But, sadly I don't think that is something you really seek.
