Buddy hit by yet another injury ahead of AFL return

By Oliver Caffrey / Wire

Lance Franklin’s wretched injury run has continued with the AFL superstar hurting his hamstring at Sydney training on Wednesday.

The veteran forward will have a scan on Thursday to determine the extent of the injury, the Swans confirmed.

Franklin had not even rejoined the club’s main training group as he was being eased back into drills after a knee arthroscopy in January.

He brought up his 300th AFL game in the final round of 2019, after his return from a nine-match absence due to a hamstring issue.

Franklin missed the Swans’ opening round win over Adelaide before the season was suspended in March.

Earlier on Wednesday, ace Swans defender Dane Rampe said the two-month layoff had been beneficial for Franklin

“We’ll be ramping him up… he should be in full training on Friday and then hopefully get a few games in him as soon as possible,” Rampe told SEN.

Yeah, but McGuire provides a lightning rod for that sort of thing. I really wish the AFL would grow a pair and treat him like any other president - no more, no less.

I think there's a lot of love in the AFL community for Buddy but few thought his deal would really see him playing at 37 given his size and the fact his game is built on pure athletic power. It's likely he will need to moderate his approach to training and playing to have any hope of seeing out his contract. As for the Swans, in a post COVID world with a smaller salary cap, that deal will hurt more than had cap continued to organically grow as was expected when the deal was announced. After losing COLA and a season of trading as a result of it, I doubt the Swans will be too dignifisd and stoic to ask the AFL for relief if he was to hang up the boots 'prematurely', and I wouldn't trust the AFL to grant it to protect their interests in the NSW market.

The time to evaluate his contract is when it finishes otherwise its just knee jerk (deliberate pun) NRL simple minded analysis of which plenty abounds in Sydney

A $9m 9 year deal is still an enormous deal right now in the AFL. The shock value is still there. I also don’t think anyone’s happy to see buddy injured, I can’t remember seeing a more universally admired player.

Gosh, the glee at Buddy's injuries is palpable. As is the glee at the notion that the Swans will try and wriggle out of his contract (they won't). He has been great for the Swans and I have no doubt he signed the contract in good faith that he would honour it. He must find the constant injuries heartbreaking. As the years go by the 'immense' sum he was paid is decreasing in shock value as big-paying contracts become more common (doubtless this will change from now). And, compared to the money to be made in basketball, soccer, NFL etc Buddy's money is peanuts. As for Eddie, who seems to harbour particular vitriol for the Swans, he is simply chewing gum on the sole of a shoe for Sydneysiders. Hardly worth scraping off.

I reckon Eddie will have lots of company. The Swans rolled the dice and will need to wear it, otherwise Free Agency becomes a bonanza for players while clubs in the market that can’t either keep or attract FAs get scr*w*d.

Yeah he’s a big red faced over confident presence Paul who can make some shocking slip ups but he is a media personality first, a president second. Media pays the bills. The presidency is voluntary. He has a huge mansion In Melbournes most exclusive suburb to maintain. Sometimes he gets confused which hat he is wearing but I’m glad it’s a black and white one.

We can only hope christo Peter, perhaps it’s because everyone knows Eddie would squeal like a pig stuck in a drain if the afl even contemplated giving the swans a concession over buddy’s contract. He earns his critics by shoving his oar into a lot of debates he doesn’t need to be involved in. Eddie everywhere wasn’t he called? Seems apt

Burgoyne, Harvey, Sandilands...it can happen. Probably Mundy too. Buddy is injured, not slowing down. I reckon he'll still be playing by the end of the contract.

It's an old man injury, that's for sure. Not even sure keeping him in cotton wool is going to improve the situation, every chance he starts pulling up sore due to underwork, as opposed to overwork. Be interesting to see if the AFL lets the Swans off the hook salary cap-wise if he retires early. Going to be an almighty storm if they do.

Finally the folly of having him play until 37 is coming home to roost
