Corporate boxes to host limited number of NRL fans in NSW

By Scott Bailey / Wire

The NRL will have crowds return in small numbers from next week with the NSW Government allowing corporate boxes to reopen.

The state government told the NRL on Friday corporate boxes would fall into the same category as pubs and clubs pending the approval of a biosecurity plan.

It means each corporate room will be able to have one person per four square metres from next weekend, with up to 50 people allowed per box.

Venues such as Bankwest Stadium have multiple boxes and lounges that can be split into different sections on top of their corporate boxes, meaning the number of attendees could be able to climb much higher.

The move will allow club sponsors to return to matches, with the ruling applied only to food and drink areas such as corporate suites.

The rules will only apply to NSW-based matches.

ARL Commission chairman Peter V’landys is still hopeful of club members then being able to return as part of capped crowds from July 1.

“We’re very pleased the government have corrected the anomaly, because this was allowed in pubs, clubs and racecourses but not sports stadiums,” V’landys told AAP.

The news comes as a big win for struggling clubs, who are doing their utmost to fulfil sponsorship deals through the coronavirus pandemic.

Meanwhile, the NRL and stadiums are continuing to map out their plans for a return to crowds.

Much has work has already been done at Bankwest Stadium on traffic flow with the entry and exit points of the ground.

A ticketing system is planned to ensure fans are spaced out appropriately between seats.

I attended the protest in Melbourne. I saw 2 people not wearing a face mask. Their were hand sanitiser stations everywhere and people carrying hand sanitiser. The risk of spreading would have been extremely low, because 99.99999% of attendees took actions to minimise any risk of them spreading the virus to others. If I picked up the virus, it was more likely I got it on the tram in, where multiple people not attending were not wearing masks, or walking home, where the majority of people in the city weren’t wearing masks and practicing the same hygiene standards.

Also. Anzac Day is a government organised event. To stop it they simply only need to not run it. A protest is something they have zero control of. The Vic Government discouraged people to attend and fined the organisers. I’m intrigued to know how they would stop it beyond that? As for the China comment, I recommend you look up Steven Ciobo’s comments on the BRI in 2018 when he signed Australia up to it...

The threat on Anzac Day was much higher than yesterday. Hence why restrictions were being relaxed in every state already. Should the anti lockdown protestors last week been banned $10k too?

Well considering they legally challenged the right for it to go ahead, sounds like they didn’t “allow it”.

I’m annoyed at the privileged getting the opportunity whilst the dedicated loyal fans will be denied. That’s jealous on my part and unfortunately the world works on $. I do think letting 2-5k of lucky ticket members wearing masks in could be explored with medical consultation. Just space the lucky supporters out. Townsville have zero cases and tests are available to anyone now so I’m feeling much more comfortable with our situation.

I agree in one sense BD, but if ( and I know it's a big "if"), the politician has paid for the privilege and the money goes back to the NRL, I've no issues with them attending. Otherwise, they should be at the back of the queue with the rest of the public.

The NRL has to work within the rules the NSW Government are applying to pubs & clubs, so if they can include other Club members or just the public in their planning, I'm very sure they'd be happy to do so. The game badly needs bums on seats and this is the first step.

Seems "old lives don't matter" when politics are at play.

We live in a ‘you can’t tell me what to do culture’...individual rights before the common good. So yes these idiots will gather en masse precisely because it’s been banned... actually banning it probably trebles the crowd. We are not a very smart species

Valanday's wants the crowds back and the critics say it can't happen any time soon. The crowds will be back soon , don't worry about that.

$10,000 fines for anyone arrested would take the wind out of their vertyou signnalling sails pretty quick . Anzac Day was cancelled, yet this rubbish is allowed to go ahead , don’t believe the government spin , that it’s about avoiding violence, Andrews and his band of sycophants to the Chinese know exactly what they are doing . Divide and conquer is the strategy.

I don't think it is a case of "allowing" so much as being able to stop them. Reports say there will be 30,000 people in Melbourne protesting, trying to stop that takes serious effort with any heavy handed response resulting in violence. After having battled our way out of Covid even to this limited stage, these people's actions that are supposed to be about caring show little thought for what an upsurge in the virus might do nor for the most vulnerable groups in society. For those with other morbidities, the old and the vulnerable that have been locked inside the last 3 months, these protesters have decided that you won't be seeing daylight anytime soon.

I'd say it just that corporate boxes can be managed like cafes and hotels, limited to 20p where food and drink is served to them. Plus it is a big money spinner for the club. The public, even a few thousand, are much harder to manage and keep apart.

The plebs - rightly - will be the last to come to games. While I personally am a bit squeamish at corporate box attendees getting top priority, it's the neatest and easiest way. The lottery opens up too many variables, for now...although I can't see it being anything but a lottery later on after July 1. Stadium members will get first priority in the lottery, then club members. That's only fair. General public won't be coming to the footy for a LONG time. And that's fair.

I cant see why limited numbers of club members cant attend as well . Maybe a lottery. How many ?, well that up to the health guys but there has to be a ' safe' number.
