Hub turning into a horror for Eagles

By Ed Jackson / Wire

West Coast’s Queensland AFL hub is quickly turning into a horror show for the premiership fancies after a 30-point loss to Brisbane on Saturday.

The Gold Coast getaway is quickly becoming the road trip that can’t end quickly enough.

The Eagles’ 30-point loss to Brisbane at the Gabba on Saturday means it’s played two, lost two so far in the Queensland AFL hub for Adam Simpson’s team.

After being humbled by Gold Coast last weekend, the Eagles found themselves ahead against the Lions at halftime but were overrun in the second half.

Simpson acknowledges hub life is having an effect on his team’s performance.

“It’s pretty obvious that there’s some differences that we’re working through…but on-field we haven’t adapted well enough up here at the moment,” Simpson said.

“That’s what we got to work through…we’re all in this together and we’ll keep fighting.”

Simpson says he and the club will continue to seek clarity over when they can return to Perth but in the meantime, he’ll work on bouncing back to winning ways when they take on Port Adelaide at Metricon Stadium next Saturday.

Elliot Yeo, Liam Ryan and captain Luke Shuey all picked up knocks against the Lions while suspended defender Jeremy McGovern rolled an ankle in a reserves scratch match earlier on Saturday, Simpson expects all four to be in contention to take on the Power.

He says while the hub isn’t ideal, it also cannot be used as an excuse.

“We come up here to win. So otherwise what’s the point coming in? And that’s that’s been our attitude and we just haven’t delivered,” he said.

“This is part of the journey and part of the experience. Sometimes you’re going to have good experiences, sometimes bad, and at the moment we’ve got to find a way to make it good.”

Hindsight is a wonderful thing. But Ross Lyon said they should base themselves in Melbourne and embrace the adversity, they got cute and went to the Gold Coast and its backfired on them. Why they went so early is baffling as well. The SA teams have only just arrived, why wasnt the Derby game played in Perth b4 relocating is bewildering. Agreeing on a home game on the GC against Richmond was stupid as well. Gotta admit, complaining about being forced to live on a resort is a bit odd. They have all been to Africa and remote Aboriginal communities, they have seen how tough some people do it in life. They are leaking goals like a sieve, they need to fix that before they do anything. Play an extra man down back or something. Maybe throw the Guv forward , play Allen down back and give Kennedy a week or two off. Agree on Brayshaw coming into the side as well.

And I'll be the first to call BS when it does. A lot more people spend a lot more time away from their families doing real jobs they get paid considerably less for.

Because this is coming up now as an excuse for their poor results. And I’m not talking scores I am talking lack of effort and poor attitude. They can raise this as an issue – no problem. And the club can be vocal and loud about it. But don’t dare use it as an excuse after only a few weeks away from home and now a 2nd game with poor effort from a significant number of players. If the effort was there from everyone I’d agree with you but they look like a team that has dropped their head and that happened too early for it to be purely as a result of fatigue from travel. This is a championship team. They didn’t suddenly get to be a poor team over the summer. This is a poor leadership effort and they need to snap out of it. Please don’t take this to mean that I disagree with your comments about the AFL and the protected teams that will undoubtedly refuse to leave Melbourne to play in a hub.

I seriously doubt it can be turned around. No one (important) is home. When Yeo, Hurn, Cripps, Darling are ALL waaaay off and Kelly not in sync yet, something somewhere broke, and broke badly. (Especially Yeo). At least Hurn & Kennedy have age excuse. But why keep Playing if your body can’t handle it? If we lost with effort and fight at least there’d be hope. But we didn’t even care enough to beat Hawthorn at Optus last year for top four, and didn’t care enough to beat Geelong. This team sadly appears to have no desire in winning the cup again any time soon. They ticked off that box in ‘18 and appear to be coasting since. If this is the the case, move on the 2-5 older star players who have gone above and beyond and done a marvellous job but no longer up to it, and allow Eagles to rebuild the next generation. Because with present form AND mindset, they’re absolutely no chance of even beating St Kilda. Before season started, although I didn’t think we were a contender, still thought definitely a mid top 8 finish. Clearly not. Sad and I hope if/when we rebuild, it’s not for years and years like most clubs have suffered. This is a winning team with good talented personnel. I’m forgetting this season and just hoping Adelaide beat us to wooden spoon.

Because the Qld govt paid for the accommodation so the AFL sent them there, the AFL wasn't sending them to anywhere that refused to pay the bill Mr realist surely you're not that simple? Why would wce choose Qld where there record is poor over Victoria where their record is pretty good and all final that count are played? The AFL told them they where playing in Qld anything else is delusional hogwash.

You really don’t handle criticism of your team well. This is a footy forum; it’s going to happen, especially when they play so poorly.

Yep, it’s all between the ears. I think they’re a top 4 team but they have to go out there every week and play like one. The forward line has to be a concern though; Kennedy looks like he’s gone on a year too long and Darling can’t do it on his own.

It's not about football it's about likelihood, I care about the lives of Australia's population you're choosing to chuck mud due to the poor decisions by the Victorian government and the AFL. Technical time it's actually Michel nostradame not the modern naming Nostradamus but as you think this is a statement about wce I realise you lack intellectual capacity.
