Pressure mounts on Green after NRL rout

By Laine Clark / Wire

Pressure is mounting on North Queensland coach Paul Green after Immortal Andrew Johns claimed their defence was “not up to NRL standard” in their 42-16 thrashing by an injury-hit Sydney Roosters.

Green admitted he would be considering team changes after they led 6-0 before conceding the next eight tries in Townsville on Thursday night.

But Johns believed Green should be the man under the most pressure after his team leaked 42 points for the second straight week to slump to their fifth loss in six matches.

Johns said the Cowboys’ effort was “under-tens stuff” after the hosts missed 32 tackles, made ten errors, and conceded ten linebreaks.

“The defence is just not up to NRL standard,” Johns told Nine Network.

“They look like they are in for a really long year. Some of the stuff…was under tens stuff.

“I’m sure Paul Green will be really disappointed with that performance. The pressure now goes onto him.”

Even Cowboys great Johnathan Thurston couldn’t defend North Queensland who have now conceded 20 points or more in six straight games for the first time since 2010.

He described the second half as a “training run” for the Roosters who overcame the loss of winger Brett Morris (groin) in the warm-up and hooker Jake Friend (head knock) in the first stanza to romp home.

The Cowboys’ cause was not helped when they lost star winger Valentine Holmes, who succumbed to a troublesome ankle injury and did not take part in the second half.

“There is quite a few of us clocking off at times particularly when we get under pressure,” Green said.

“It’s just a bit of confidence, trusting in each other and trusting in the system.”

Asked if he could still bring the best out of his team this year, Green said: “Yes. (But) you can’t talk about it, you’ve got to do it.

“So we have to work hard, be accountable, just fight a bit harder for each other when we are under a bit of pressure.”

Green said players could also follow the lead of prop Josh McGuire who ran 199m, almost matching workaholic lock Jason Taumalolo (227m).

North Queensland’s game was summed up when Kyle Feldt missed a chance to give the hosts an 8-0 lead with a 29th minute penalty kick by hitting the upright at point blank range.

The Roosters then overcame an error riddled first half to launch a blitz that included six tries in 21 minutes.

“There’s plenty of reasons for me to make changes in the team,” Green warned.

Green said the Cowboys would monitor Holmes who was in his second game back from an ankle injury that had sidelined him for a fortnight.

Paul Green has to except responsibility for the cowboys poor performances. The players are giving him 65% effort. This means they will remain n the bottom region of the ladder. Green is an below average coach. Also, who is buying the players for the club. They also need to be removed from the club. How Ponga was allowed to slip away from becoming a contract player....is unbelievable. Micheal Morgan does not have the X factor..it will be a crime to have him back. We need a coach with perception like the roosters and storm. There players believe in them. Cowboys board of directors need to get rid of 50% of their staff and players and start again I cannot see the cowboys playing finals for another 5 years...

Great comment!! JT13 is just a meter eating battering ram. He offers no variety and as good a meter eater as he is it's not going to worry good teams too muI know Robson scored off the back of one of his play the balls but that is rare. He generally fights so hard for every last meter his play the ball is slow.

The Broncos have always had the most players to pick from of all ages but they haven't picked the best of them. So many players grow up wanting to play for the club. Even Luke Keary wanted to. The Sharks recruited heaps of veterans prior to 16 and the Knights have done it in the past as well. Any team can make the 8 at the start of a season and any team could win a title within 4 years in my opinion. Look at the bottom 3 a couple of years back . Manly and the Eels were there. The Chooks could start to slide pretty soon anyway. It's not set in concrete , just look at history.

then boards need to be held accountable? How many fans are also football club members with voting rights? Unless you are a privately owned club there is nothing stopping fans voting and getting the changes they demand

“It’s just a bit of confidence, trusting in each other and trusting in the system.” It seems to me Green has summed up the two problems the Cowboys have at present. I'm not sure how you can trust a system when so many points are being leaked every week. I'm also not sure how guys can trust each other when so many soft missed tackles are occurring.

It's impossible for all of the teams to operate like the roosters. For starters, they have fantastic depth of experience at talent (probably north of 2000 games). If there's only so much talent and experience to go around, one club having great players comes at the expense of other clubs. I look at the broncos and cowboys and think "there must be veterans they can recruit". But there aren't. The same thing applies at coaching and board rooms. Distribution curves, filtering processes and rates of attrition mean that there's only so much top talent to go around. If you get the top 10 of boards, then you'll be more likely to get the top tier coach, whose success will aid attracting and retaining top talent. By definition, that means someone else has a bad board, has a mediocre or inexperienced coach, and is stocked by bottom 50% talent or kids (who are being damaged by the experience). However, a lot of the problem would be addressed if lower grade was more competitive to test emerging coaches in a more NRL esque competition. If the talent was managed, it would keep kids in the second tier comp until they were a little more physically conditioned and mentally experienced. It's telling when commentators keep saying "it's like men against boys".

I think a couple of the tries were incorrect. One was overturned, but they didn't show any good angles at slomo. The other was one where usually the commentators would say the boot must have touched a blade of grass with paint. I think 1-2 tries were due to hampton (I think) having no clue on the wing. That's just context for the 42 points. The cowboys looked physically powerful around the 20 minute mark and physically competed for most of their first half. However, by the second half the roosters were bursting through tackles at will around the middle. You field a team with 4 forwards with under 50 games, you're going to have resiliency issues. They're underdone and missing the positivity of morgan. Drinkwater keeps getting called out in defense, but he either lacks creativity or isn't being given useful instructions for breaking down an attack. And the halves have under 50 games between them! Green would be saved if he's been let down by factors beyond his control, but this seems like a weak lineup. If they players grow with experience, they may do well tomorrow. But if money is bound up in 4 ish stars and the other guys don't come on (not every prospect becomes a 300 gamer), then they may tread water. The roosters by contrast (as a high benchmark for all teams) have a gratuitous glut of talent that makes you wonder about the salary cap, are well drilled and mostly have players who are either in their peak or have attained veteran status (which seemingly requires rare talent). They're polished and battle hardened.

As a Roosters supporter I expected a win, however I was hoping for a decent game considering the Cowboys were on their home ground had heaps of preparation time and no travel and get flogged by a fly on fly out team on a short turn around with 4-5 key players missing and loosing a star winger just before kick off. The cowboys looked pretty good for about 20 minutes then the wheels just fell off. Lucky for the Cowboys that Lachlan Lam has no left focus at dummy half because if he had Hall probably would have had a couple of trys as well. For a last minute substitute winger with only a handful of first grade games under his belt who normally plays centre to score 5 trys as a winger just left me dumbfounded that he did it so easy. Green was sitting red faced & embarrassed in the coaching box all the second half wondering what went wrong. However one thing is obvious either Green needs to get a new game plan book or give the job to somebody that has.

Green was lobster red in the box. His BP readings must be critical. Time to go.

No doubt it's easier to play in the Chooks outfit but Keary is showing how it's done. He's doing everything right. The easiest way to score a try is to back up and the easiest way to make a break is to hit the gap at full clappers and I reckon heaps of players could do a lot more of both.

Yep ! That "Hammer" might be quick, but he is way out of his depth in the NRL. He is as timid as a mouse, offers nothing in hit ups out of defence, is missing in any backline raids , and is always late in cover defense. Val Holmes should have never been on the park. His ankle is obviously not right. The whole Cows backline is porous, particularly around Drinkwater & Marsters. And while the forwards battle for some metres, they don't at all worry the opposition. Even Taumololo might run for 250 metres but he is not causing any real problems to assist the Cows attack ? He rarely offloads the ball now. The only positive attacking moments come from Robson scooting out of dummy half , but that is making up for his poor passing service out of dummy half. Gavin Cooper hasn't done a thing since JT retired and is just going through the motions. They were terribly embarrassing last night and perhaps they need a major clean out. Even with Morgan , McLean & Asiata back, I wouldn't be confident of any great improvement.

Worse still is he turns his back in defence, too ! Opposition teams are getting so confused knowing whether to attack the Cows on the right or left side either at Marsters or Drinkwater.

I was having another good look at Marsters and although he does some good things his basic method is to turn his back as he is being tackled and start walking backwards while hoping to get a pass away. How about hitting the gap at full pace? Might be an interesting alternative.

I can't remember which clubs were meant to be less impacted by Covid and the six again rule but I don't care. The game is entertaining and faster and even if some teams end up plodding this year it doesn't mean we should make it easier for them. A few clubs including the Chickens are playing outstanding league and it's up to the rest of the clubs to get their acts together.

Which brings me back to the lunacy of the Titans. You can have some of the best forwards in the comp carting the ball up for you, but if you lack playmakers with vision and the ability to execute their efforts are useless. Mel should have been watching last night and thinking ... maybe we shouldn’t be throwing the whole bank at a promising young work horse.
