Broncos reportedly set to sack Pangai Jr in NRL bombshell

By The Roar / Editor

Multiple outlets are today reporting that the Brisbane Broncos have sensationally ripped up Tevita Pangai Jr.’s $650k-a-year contract, with an unspecified breach notice reportedly incoming.

Both Pete Badel, chief rugby league writer for Brisbane’s Courier-Mail and, and Triple M Brisbane are reporting the forward’s days at the club are over.

Pangai Jr. is already serving a two-week suspension for breaching the NRL’s COVID protocols after he attended the opening of a Black Canvas barbershop the day after Brisbane’s loss to South Sydney. The shop allegedly has links to bike gangs in Queensland, leading to fierce criticism of the forward by several past Broncos players.

Whether his termination is linked to this breach or a separate issue is yet to be clarified. If sacked, he will not be able to sign with another club this season.

The 24-year-old has made 81 appearances for the Broncos since debuting in 2016, while also representing Tonga on the international stage.

"The Gold Cost Giants started one year after the Broncos " Nup they started in 88 the same as the the Broncs and the Knights they became the Seagulls after the 89 season but Brisbane had all of South East Queensland sewn up by the middle of 87

It's not the existing talent it's the juniors. Yes talent gets poached but it's also easier to train and retain local. Most of the "misses" were deliberate. The majority of quality players in our school were in some type of Broncos system.

Was on the board at the Cowboys when they won a premiership and also has been or maybe still is an independent director of Queensland Rugby League so by my way of thinking seems like he might have a few clues. You want fries with that?

You're lost aren't you, you meant to post on the badminton thread or something. Just like you I don't know what you are mumbling about over there in the corner but carry on, the nice men will come before sundown to take you back to the shelter for some soup and a warm blanket.

Kane Evans on 500k can't be right? He was a bench player when he came across from the Roosters.

Is that like Bennett's "James Roberts won't be coming to the Rabbitohs".

Robo has come out and said TPJ is not going to the Roosters. Not the type of player he wants around his club.

I agree with the general thrust of what you are saying, but the monopsony myth is ridiculously overblown. Most of the top Queensland/Brisbane talent was already getting poached to play in NSW before the Broncos even existed. The Raiders alone had a bunch of Queensland Origin players in 1987 when the Broncos started. The Gold Cost Giants started one year after the Broncos and the Cowboys started 5 years later in 1992. The Storm started 6 years after that. So there was only one year in 1988 when it could be suggested that the Broncos were the only local Qld team in the NSWRL. And they were picking leftovers who hadn’t already been signed to NSW teams.

Given that Kane Evans is going to the warriors next year parra will presumably have space in the cap (Evans was on 500k a year). I really really hope we don’t waste it on Pangai

Not sure if a trip to the bikie barber outside the bubble will stand up as a sackable offence but TPJ may have other sanctions on his record, over & above the various suspensions. A lawyers picnic looming but if he goes to Uncle Nick quietly, I'd lock Christian Welch in for 3 seasons, level head, educated & disciplined from his Storm experience. Better a better than average effort every game than flashes of brilliance punctuated with brain fades. No way Smith will come to the Broncos, he's not suicidal.
