Carlton win sets new benchmark for Blues

By Steve Larkin / Wire

Carlton coach David Teague has finally seen it – a complete performance from his AFL team.

Teague reckons Friday night’s 33-point hammering of Gold Coast in Darwin may just set a new benchmark for the Blues.

“That is who we want to be,” Teague said the 7.18 (60) to 4.3 (27) win.

“They played for their mates and they supprorted each other really well.

“So, yeah, it could have been our best team performance in terms of overall evenness.

“We have had a couple of good ones but that is who we want to be.”

The Blues kept the Suns scoreless until midway into the second quarter en route to their sixth season win.

Teague’s outfit now sit ninth, trailing eighth-placed Melbourne only by percentage ahead of further matches this round.

Winnable fixtures against arch foe Collingwood, GWS, Sydney and Adelaide loom before a last-round clash with Brisbane.

But Teague won’t countenance talk of making the finals just yet.

“It (finals) is a by-product of the way we play, so we focus on the way we play,” he said.

“If it happens, it happens.

“But we feel each game we’re going to go out there to win. We feel we’re capable to beat anyone if we play our way, so that is our aim.

“We have got 22 guys who go out there with a job to do and when we do that we feel we will win most games.”

Against the Suns, ex-skipper Marc Murphy gathered a game-high 28 disposals and current captain Patrick Cripps collected 22 touches featuring nine clearances.

Sam Walsh (24), Jack Newnes (23, one goal), Will Setterfield (23) and Jack Martin (21) were other prolific ball-winners.

And the Blues had the most dominant forward on the ground with Harry McKay taking eight marks in the sweaty conditions.

McKay marred his fine display with errant kicking – he finished with two goals and four behinds – but his powerhouse showing impressed.

“His ability to get separation on his opponent, he is obviously super quick,” Teague said.

“And he got some really good looks. I thought it was the best we have probably kicked to our forwards.”

You can chase him all you like but there's more chance of Pendlebury playing for Carlton then what there is of Harry playing for Collingwood.

There’s proactively chasing Harry and just wanting Harry. Pies are proactively chasing with the lure of a 5-6 year deal heavily back loaded. Beams, Dunn, Cox, Reid, Broomhead, Varcoe will all be off the books end year freeing up space to sign Moore, De Goey and McKay.

Last year a couple of weeks after Teague was appointed I said the Blues would play finals in 2020 and would play in the GF in 2021 ..... most people laughed at me. Well it will be touch and go if they play finals this year (I think they are good enough) but my prediction is not looking so far fetched now.

Not worried about the banter but trying to claim the blues chose the wrong path in 2015 is bad banter and beneath you

Gold Coast coming off a 4 day break and at their worst for 2020. I’ll take it with a grain of salt. Game looked of poor quality but we can at least blame the high humidity for that. We’re 6 and 6 and it’s a long time since we’ve been in this position. Good to see some of our younger players stepping up this year and it is a much more even team performance than it has been for many years.

The hatred has been dormant for 20 years DTM. In that period Pies have played in 5 GF’s plus a draw, secured another flag while the Blues have secured about 14 wooden spoons.
