Reports: Seibold set to quit Broncos

By News / Wire

Brisbane coach Anthony Seibold is reportedly set to quit the struggling NRL club in the next 48 hours.

The under-fire mentor will not return to Brisbane after being in isolation for 14 days after breaching the NRL’s biosecurity protocols, according to The Daily Telegraph.

The report said Seibold’s agent Isaac Moses was finalising a $1-million termination agreement with the club which was expected to be completed within days.

The Broncos have slipped to second from bottom on the NRL ladder under Seibold’s tutelage.

Seibold has served just two years of a five-year contract.

After months on end of getting force fed quote after quote about how I as a Broncos supporter demand success I'm just not sure that's the level of success that will satiate the expectations imposed on the club.

Yeah, can't wait to re-enact this every two years for the forseeable future... I hope the club has a budget for coach payouts

Yeah it's hardly an emergency when they are the likely alternatives...

Though I agree with the rush to fire Seibold with no real plan in place. Feels like this situation is broader reaching and needs a whole of club solution.

Not the full picture no, but then a throw away line about not being successful doesn't juxtapose the two levels of "failure". :silly:

You may not have to worry. Current rumour is Hook is at the head of line for Dragons.

I always thought paying heaps for a rookie coach on a 5 year deal was chancy ..... do the Broncos now wish they had given Bennett his requested 1 year extension? I am leary of these reports all coming from the News Ltd press. The Broncos are backed by News Ltd. I have no doubt Seibold is negotiating a settlement but $1M ???? Come on, its got to be at least $2M if not the whole package.

It was around 45% without Lockyer. And Seibold's was around 56% at the start of the year. I think it's fair to say win percentages don't give the full picture here. I supported Hook when he was Coach but there's a difference between backing someone who's currently got the job and chasing someone to "fix" the place. Personally I wouldn't let Hook anywhere near a place with apparent culture and roster issues, especially when it comes to player retention.

He’s got a 55% win rate. including 53% during his “failure” at the broncos.

I don't want Griffin, he is just a better option than Green, he has at least shown he can get a young group of players and form them into NRL players.

A couple of thoughts on this. Firstly, I have to feel for the guy - every time you see him interviewed after a loss these days he reminds me of Ralph Wiggum when he gets his heart broken by Lisa on TV. In saying that, his whole start at the club had a certain stench about it. The Broncos took the nuclear option in sacking the master coach when they could have just let him have a final year and finish on terms much less fractious for the club. All the talk at the time of “ending the circus” rings pretty hollow now. At the time, Seibold came out in the media and said he felt like "a punching bag". Fair comment or not, to play the victim when you've just been handed a multi-million dollar 6 year contract most could only dream of wasn't the best look, and probably a sign of what was to come. Secondly, the knock-on effect this will have on the Broncos in the future to attract coaching talent will be interesting. Bennett aside, every other Broncos coach has been short-lived and hasn't reached expectations - it seems to be the poisoned chalice of NRL coaching positions. No doubt they'll get someone - Walters and Green look keen to put up their hands for the role, but you’d have to now really wonder if these on-going coaching sagas would ever play a role in causing a Bellamy or a Robinson to think twice about taking the reigns at the club.

I have said this before, the best coach for the Broncos is Shaun Wane, he is rough as guts and the antipathy of Seibold and is just what the Broncos need. The Board might need to bite their tongues a bit with him as he will probably rub them up the wrong way but he is exactly what Brisbane needs.

The Brisbane side is the NRL basket case whoever takes over from Siebold has a monumental task,,,,,all those "promising young players" with very few hard heads...management has stuffed up....bigtime

I don’t want to get into a Walters vs Siebold argument. I merely responded about the length of their resumes. Most of us are clueless about how a new coach will go. Did anyone predict with certainty the Roosters made a great call hiring the unknown Robinson? Who did they stave off to get his signature? No one. Yet every club bar Melbourne would swap their coach out with him now. A lot of people said Holbrook wasn’t the right coach for the Titans after they’d chewed up and spat out Brennan and other greenhorns. But right now, with their increasing competitiveness, and a few wins no one predicted, they look like they have a good’un. But then, who knows how long it’ll last…? Green won the comp 5 yrs ago, made an unlikely GF two yrs later, but then has coached a stale looking bottom 6 team since. For my two-bob, I will firstly start by saying I thought Siebold was a positive signing. I thought Bennett should have stayed in 2019 for a swansong (ala 2008), but thought Siebold was a positive replacement. Now I feel very, very wrong. Siebold has stunk it up and I’m glad he’s going. I was so wrong I am second guessing that Walters isn’t, and should never be, a long term coach for the Broncs. But blimey, Walters couldn’t do any worse right now as a short term option. He just needs to simplify things and put some pride in the jersey. “Run hard, tackle hard boys. Back each other up, have each other’s back in defence.”

Isn't there adverse history between Hook and Broncos? He'd still feel a little burnt by last time?

Agreed Bunney. He has suffered enough but is getting his pound of flesh out of the club and fans. Rome would burn if he led them into another awful nosedive next season. Terrible news about his family situation if this is true. Hopefully he will find peace and treasure his family.

I hate to state the obvious, but the clear solution is to have Gould conduct a review, and run them off a copy of the five year plan. Problem solved - let's move on to something else.
