Super Rugby AU Round 9 teams: Rob Penney makes selection gamble for must-win match

By The Roar / Editor

Rob Penney has handed league convert Tepai Moeroa his first Super Rugby start in the Waratahs’ must-win clash against the Melbourne Rebels.

Moeroa hasn’t played in Super Rugby AU yet but has been handed the no.12 jersey with Karmichael Hunt ruled out through injury. Joey Walton has been moved to outside centre and Lalakai Foketi misses out on the squad entirely.

The rest of the NSW starting side remains unchanged, although young back-rower Will Harris is an inclusion on the bench.

The Rebels have opted for stability for Saturday night’s match, naming the same backline that ran out against the Reds prior to their bye last week. In the forwards, Jermaine Ainsley comes into the starting front row, pushing Pone Fa’amausili to the reserves, while Michael Wells comes into the back row at blindside flanker for Josh Kemeny.

Dave Wessels has also opted for a 5-3 bench split instead of the six forwards he carried on the pine in Round 7.

After making 16 changes for last round’s win over the Tahs, Brumbies coach Dan McKellar has made just one to his starting XV to take on the Force on Friday night, bringing in Joe Powell for Ryan Lonergan.

Ryan’s brother Lachlan also drops out of the squad, allowing Folau Fianga’a to return from a calf niggle on the bench, while a switch to three backs on the bench instead of two sees young playmaker Reesjan Pasitoa come in for Tom Cusack.

As for the Force, Tim Sampson has gone with seven of the same eight forwards that started against the Reds, the only change to the pack being a move to the bench for back-rower Brynard Stander. Henry Stowers will start at number eight.

In the backs, Henry Taefu swaps places with Richard Kahui, the former starting at no.12 and the latter named to come off the bench, while Byron Ralston is a notable omission. Marcel Brache will start on the right wing, Jack McGregor at fullback, and Jono Lance returns to the run-on side at flyhalf.

Yes I like Robertson's technique and was most interested to see him handle the big Fella.

I think they are sheltering Pone a little bit from him, he's a lot more comfortable going against a taller loosehead like Gus Bell.

Hunt would have a quite word in Moeroa ear “ They say that Toumua going get up in your face and run rings around you”. Moeroa - “come on K your starting your starting to like sound like the bench”. K – “benches are there to put your arses on, get of your arse and prove them wrong”

Totally agree re Staniforth. I was desperately worried about our locks and in fact, Hannigan and Staniforth have both been good

If they all went to the same side and played in sky blue, it would make life simpler. I could stop supporting the Tahs and simply follow a team in Japan

He (Tafa) was def. one of the picks of the bunch in those A games. Moeroa impressed me less. Looked hesistent, rusty with his decision making and as you said a little slow.

Got it Brett. Kafer said to pick only those aged under 44, no?

Haven't seen an official announcement but the Greg Clark, Kafer and Kearns were saying he's off to Japan the other week. (They said Holloway too). Rennie has since added him to the PONI so not certain what is happening. Haven't seen an official announcement regarding him

Yeah, that was surprising, Greysy. One of the best finishers in Australia, never mind the Force..

Agree on both fronts, Paul. I think Walton has shown us a lot more at 13 this season than Foketi has in several..

When did Hooper last miss a match for the Tahs? It feels like it was years and years ago.

Not surprised to see McCaffrey starting, despite some disagreeing with me on this on Tuesday. Hopefully able to put his injury woes behind him.
