Majak Daw: The three clubs that should pick him up

By Patrick Morrow / Roar Guru

As reported on Friday, North Melbourne has delisted 11 players, including comeback man Majak Daw.

Daw’s manager, Adam Ramanauskas, has reportedly said his man would be keen play on elsewhere if another club had a spot on their roster.

So where should Majak Daw go? These are three teams that should pick him up.

Carlton Blues
If Majak went to the Blues, it’d be a real steal. Why? Because Charlie Curnow is prone to injury, and with Matthew Kreuzer retiring he could be the perfect replacement as second ruckman or in the forward line.

Let’s be honest: Mitch McGovern has looked out of place all season, kicking only nine goals for the year as the marquee forward. Levi Casboult has looked awful in the past few games, missing opportunities and not taking simple marks. Replacing one of those players with Daw would be a perfect opportunity for Carlton to push to play finals.

As we saw in his early days with the Roos, Daw knows how to kick a bag, and that’s what Carlton need. Just imagine Harry McKay, Charlie Curnow and Majak Daw in the forward line together. It would be dangerous to come up against them – plus Eddie Betts is still running around. I’d watch this space if I were a Carlton fan.

Essendon Bombers
The Bombers would also make a lot of sense, especially with rumours Shaun McKernan will be delisted. And anyway, with Tom Bellchambers retiring, they need an explosive ruckman who can kick goals. Daw would be perfect for Ben Rutten’s men and would provide an option up the field as well.

Furthermore, Daw could be a perfect replacement for Joe Daniher, who looked awful against Melbourne in the final round, going goalless. He looks ready to leave the Dons for greener pastures. So, Bombers fans, do you think it could work? It sounds good to me.

Melbourne Demons
Majak Daw would look great in a Demons jumper according to Jayden Hunt when he spoke post-match to the ABC at the weekend. If Daw went to the Dees, he would form a great forward line that could finally start kicking bags of goals. Furthermore, he would help Christian Petracca’s game by providing a big forward for the midfielder to aim for. He would benefit Sam Weideman, who looks like the only genuine forward in the Melbourne team. Daw could be the difference for Melbourne to clinch a finals spot in 2021.

So, footy fans, where should Majak Daw play in 2021? Should it be the Blues, Dons or Dees – or is there another club?

I'd play him back or ruck. Any player who is desperate to play forward is asking for a poisoned chalice. The club rooms and boot lockers are festooned with the remnants of goalish dreaming. The glory sticks are the AFL equivalent of the Gate of Horn. The Gods of Footy presence on Earth that judge whether your dreams are real. They are a mistress not only harsh but unrelenting. They look so easy and often are but that same space can turn all our bravest warriors into fumble bum jelly legs. I'm not sure why Majak covets the forward line so but if I were him I'd get good and fit and tell the world he is indeed the best intercept mark in the game.

This is insane. He's 30 next year and has only ever been a player with potential. After 11 years in the system it's reasonable to make the call that he won't ever fulfill it. There are dozens of unlisted players I'd take over him, especially when list sizes are likely to contract.

Maj is one of the best intercepting backmen in the comp when he is on, and a great ruckman in his own right. He struggles on the forward line. Should only be swung thru there when he his confidence is high. Provided he is fully physically right from his issues a few years ago he will have at least two good years from the backline IMO, (and I think we should have given him an extra year and payed out Tom Campbell.)

The Blues are going to struggle to fit McKay, Curnow, Casboult, McGovern, TDK & JSOS into their forward line next year and you think the answer is grabbing Daw whose best footy has been in defence?

I reckon a club like Port Adelaide would best suit his skill set. He could provide a useful option next to Dixon and Robbie Grey and would have better coaching and method to his craft under Hinkley.

I’m think at this moment in time melbourne probably makes the most sense given his own athleticism. I don’t think daw is a like for like replacement for Joey but he could be a good second fiddle if he weren’t so old.
