VOTE: Wallabies Bledisloe 2 DIY player ratings vs New Zealand

By The Roar / Editor

The All Blacks have drawn first blood in the 2020 Bledisloe Cup, defeating the Wallabies 27-7 at Eden Park.

As always after an Australian Test match, we want you to tell us how each of the Wallabies fared in the Bledisloe 2 defeat.

Harry Wilson was excellent on debut last week, but was he as good at number eight this time around? Did Ned Hanigan justify his inclusion in the side? How did the unchanged backline rate? Were Jordan Petaia and Liam Wright worthy additions to the bench? And how about Brandon Paenga-Amosa in his first game against the Kiwis?

And if you need a general guide to each of the scores you can hand out, well…

1.Had he not played, the team would have been better off. Negatively affected the performance of the side. May God have mercy on his soul.
2. Anonymous. Was he even there?
3. Did some things that you expect a player to be able to do, but did a whole bunch of other things that sucked.
4. Was passable in patches, but not up to standard in a squad of such depth.
5. Performed his role without anything really noticeable happening.
6. Good.
7. Pretty good, actually.
8. Very good.
9. Excellent.
10. Might as well have been John Eales.

So go on, enter your player ratings in the form below and we’ll have the results out tomorrow.

Sarge don’t quote me but I think there is little to no chance of anyone new coming into the squad at short notice and in any case while we have existing cover in the squad.

Get Kyle Godwin into the squad to cover 12. International experience and handy left boot. Played well for the force this year in the centres. Petaia to 13, Noah on the bench

We need to stop making the mistakes of the past. Lolesio is the best No.10 in Australia. If you are going to pick him he must in No.10. JOC has played a lot in 12, so that won't bother him.

If Paisami is the future you have just wished Australian Rugby to 5th or 6th Winter sport. Club Rugby might be a good start next year to learn to A; Defend, and B; Read a defensive line. I don’t know his club team, but I am sure that he will get some invaluable tuition there.

I'd go O'Connor 10 Simone 12, then Lolesio on the bench. At least at this point in time. Those three may rotate a bit over the next couple of seasons but with Toomua out I see them all in the match day 23 for the foreseeable future. Unless Rennie persists with Paisami at 12 but I think that would be a mistake.

Paisami should be given a connecting flight ticket. Straight home. SRAU is one thing, Test is another. So far out of his depth it was sad to watch. The bearded lad that came on should go home and have a good hard look at what it takes to play Test rugby as well.

Yeah, but the game is dynamic. Ask three guys on here whether it was a penalty you'll get four opinions. Amongst the refs that might only be 1.5 opinions.

:silly: Funny, ref seems to know more about the game than the commentators!

Thumbs up for the comment, thumbs down for what Ned didn't do i.e. stop Smith, that was so soft.

Even for the first one he pulled out as soon as Gus called him on it yet he still played the advantage. I though he came through the middle on that one too.

A little bit like Greg Ingliss with his offloads, but not the maturity to pick time and place yet.

Why do I have memories of Ella/Lynagh and the benefits that followed for many years thereafter?

I think it’s got to be JOC or Simone at 12. JOC can be effective in either spot so it may me decided by which of Lolesio or Simone is Rennie’s next preference. I could live with either but at this stage I think we need to develop a 12 especially if MT is out for a while.

Gordon's pass my be crisp but the organisation was such that on many an occasion he was having to look left and right to find a runner. I thought a lot of the Wallabies' problems arose as a result of mis-communication and indecision. They were re-active rather than pro-active. The only thing worse than making the wrong decision is making no decision at all.

Sometimes our best positional player is not as good as we would like, but he is our best - experience would indicate that playing an otherwise good player out of their normal position is not a solution and rarely ever works out well. The problem over recent times in Australia is that we have not invested enough in developing these specialist positional players and we are now hooked on the alternative of having to rely on generalists to cover key positions. A good example is the 10 / 11 positions - both O'Connor and To'omua have over their extensive careers developed as generalists - as a consequence they lack the 'native' intuition and skills of a specialist 10 / 11 . ie good situational awareness and kicking skills - this is not to say that they lack skill , courage or ambition Having the toughest job in international sport - being a Wallabies supporter - I would nonetheless be quite prepared to lose some tests whilst the Wallabies now embark on developing a team built around our best available specialist players -- this would likely result in a back line of McDermott, Lolesio, Simone, Petaia, Daugunu, T Wright and Banks - if a better specialist position players comes along down the road, then they come into consideration to replace the incumbent I recognize that the individuals above are not the finished article yet, but are more likely to be the reach their full potential were the coaching staff to invest in their development and experience

Chopper, I think Banks certainly lacked penetration on Sunday night. We seem to very short of fullback stocks. We need someone with the strengths of Folau, plus a willingness to learn the game properly. Australia's fullback was in marked contrast to BB. Is there someone (maybe Wright?) who can make fullback his own? I think DHP is two seasons past it.

Gepetto, I fear you are right. He was very much missed when he had to go off. Where is the leader to step up?

Petaia: seems too keen to offload whatever the circumstances, when it would be less risky to go to ground and recycle. He does look a great prospect, but maybe he is trying to do too much at this early stage of his test career.

TF: I noticed that it was White who put the authoritative tackle on Caleb Clarke, on one of the latter's rampages, after he had been missed by others.
