Titans axe ex-player Gordon after arrest

By Ed Jackson / Wire

Gold Coast cut ties with Michael Gordon after the former NRL player was arrested and charged with multiple drug offences.

The 37-year-old was one of seven people arrested after a NSW police investigation into MDMA and cocaine supply on the state’s far north coast and in south-east Queensland.

Gordon, who played 261 NRL matches before retiring at the end of 2019, was charged with two counts of supply prohibited drug and two counts of possess prohibited drug.

He was granted conditional bail and is set to appear at Tweed Heads Local Court on December 14.

Within hours of his arrest, the Titans released a brief statement confirming Gordon would no longer be working with them as a specialist coach.

“Michael has been working on a contract basis, providing specialist coaching services to the club over the past season,” the Titans said.

“He will not be providing services to the club until further notice.”

A goal-kicking fullback, Gordon made one State of Origin appearance for NSW in his long career, which included stints at Penrith, Cronulla, Parramatta and the Sydney Roosters.

A Tweed Coast junior player, Gordon joined the Titans before the 2018 season and played 36 matches for them before retiring.

He moved into an off-field role, under coach Justin Holbrook in the lead-up to the 2020 season, which included mentoring young gun AJ Brimson.

The kids on schoolies surely should have a post exam induction into what to expect during this period. It should have basic first aid training. Lectures on drug and alcohol abuse. How to I D predators etc. They should also be thought to photograph drug dealers and put them on line.

A dozen years pulling way better money than the average labourer followed by coaching work with the most prominent club here and still that wasn't enough. Then he chases a quick quid in a field populated by the most deceitful, most unscrupulous urgers one could imagine, who would sell you down the river as soon as look at you. Schoolies weeks are open season for this lot, to clean out the competition; to curry favour with the local cops by offering them a good target to keep their arrest numbers up; dopey school teenagers with big gobs and no understanding that the quiet bloke in the corner is taking notes of names and places - that sort of thing. This Gordon bloke doesn't sound real bright.

Is there an underlying issue here? Seems I have read this story a few times before in recent years.

I cast my mind back to my days of youth when “things go better with coke” had a somewhat different meaning!

Wasn't he going to retire a few years ago and go and play bush footy? Wonder if this is why he stayed around...

His phone contacts is worth a whole off season of speculation in the media. I hope it doesn't play out that way but he's a fair conduit between young blokes with money and the other side.

The Titans are heading for a massive year in 21, they need all the food publicity they can get. Drug testing the whole squad should be a priority . now. No one should feel sorry for gordon, the coast has struggled for decades in every department. Who knows what damage he has caused.

you'd think the Gold Coast would be drug testing all their guys now, just in case. I'm guessing they're clean, but I'd reckon fans and in particular sponsors would want to know for sure.

Am I the only one concerned about the wider implications of having coaching staff allegedly involved with a syndicate that also moves steroids? That said, I'd have to defer to any lawyers on here about what actually constitutes as "involvement" and "supply". I know some places have a fairly low level entry point for the terms.

Not Flash,Gordon. That's the front page headline on today's Gold Coast Bulletin. Fifita was front page the other day, now Michael Gordon. What a contrast.
