Naden provisionally suspended following grand final drug test

By The Roar / Editor

Penrith Panthers centre Brent Naden has been provisionally suspended under the NRL’s anti-doping policy, after an A-sample returned a positive result for metabolites of cocaine.

The test was conducted by Sport Integrity Australia after the 2020 NRL grand final, which Penrith lost to Melbourne.

Cocaine is an in-competition prohibited substance under the World Anti-Doping Authority (WADA) code and the NRL’s anti-doping policy.

His B-sample is currently being analysed and he will be banned from participating in any WADA-compliant sport, including the NRL, while suspended.

Penrith’s official statement is as follows.

“[The] Penrith Panthers acknowledge the provisional suspension handed down to player Brent Naden after he returned a positive test for a recreational drug.

“As previously reported, Brent approached the club following the 2020 NRL grand final to seek help with a number of personal issues. At the time, he admitted to the use of a recreational drug.

“Panthers informed the NRL of Brent’s admission and, with the support of the club, he commenced a voluntary rehabilitation program at a private health facility.

“Brent recently completed that program and continues to address his personal issues with the support of his family and Panthers staff.

“Working closely with Brent through this process, the club believes he has the capacity to overcome his personal issues and realise his potential.

“Panthers will continue to provide Brent and his family the support they need moving forward.

“In accordance with the World Anti-Doping Code, the club, Brent, his family and manager can make no further comment at this time.”

I wonder would that make it a victimless harmless recreational non-illegal dose thingy? :silly: That everyone does all the time, which makes it alright anyway.

Sorry if it seemed like I was saying that's what I though your view was - it was more a reference to the typical older guys with the "back in my day" attitude, not actually aimed at you. I thought your comments were pretty balanced.

Gee Emcie, you are so right. I'm an older bloke, and incidents due to mostly beer were rife in my more tender years in football clubs, and not just by players. It's a good thing that times have changed. I can still remember our fullback throwing an empty stubbie of beer over his shoulder as we ran across the sideline onto the field. I'm ashamed to recall that I wasn't upset by this. What I wondered was how he could afford the stubbie when I couldn't.

Thanks TWAS for such a detailed reply. I appreciate it very much. I delayed responding because I wanted to think about your comments. I was particularly interested in your comparison between Naden and Scott. That is quite valid. Agreed. And despite me being an older bloke, I don't think we're too different with our view about the pressure on modern day sports people. I think that the pressures are too great, and the expectations of our elite athletes are equally too great. And I agree, life at the top of the tree isn't all rainbows and lollipops.

The business person doesn't make their money from being in the public eye. Just like less is made of the volunteer who sacrifices more to run a charity than the player who shows up for 2 hours.

Exactly. If you hate drugs steer clear of any pub in the Eastern Suburbs of Sydney on a Saturday night.

Mono I don't know if it's so much expecting too much, but having different values. It's also incredibly prevalent in men 20-40. Most people would consider recreational drug use on the very low end of illegal actions. It's not legal, but you are not hurting, or risking harm to anybody else. Being a professional athlete in this day and age is extremely high pressure. Most jobs as a tradie would be a walk in the park compared to it. Many out of touch people think their job is for 80 minutes on Saturday, but it's much more than that. It's 24/7. When I was an apprentice I'd turn up some Saturdays still drunk. I remember once sleeping in a closest on a quiet and hungover Saturday. Where for these guys there's no turning up to work and going through the motions. You are pushed at training. You need to watch your weight, ensure you are in good condition to train, great condition to play. If you want to go on holidays you get a set window and that's it. Your best mate is having a bucks weekend in May? Too bad, hope the wedding is in the off-season. Your parent's 30th wedding anniversary interstate in March? Too bad, you'll miss that. Your sister is getting married in Europe in their summer? Might catch them at Christmas. There's a lot of sacrifice. But there's also not a great deal of reasonableness and understanding. If you're a person that thinks Naden is not looking after his body by doing this after the Grand Final, I hope you're fuming that Curtis Scott was so drunk he fell asleep at the start of the year, because that will impact his performance a lot more. There's also the pressure of the profile. If I get caught having a few bumps of white powder on the weekend I won't get fined or suspended at my job, and outside some gov/public service/defence positions, or FIFO jobs (and even then only if you test positive when you are at work), very few will either. This applies to other actions that many in society take too. Sure it's great to live your dream. But it's not all rainbows and lollipops either, like many people try and make out.

I am not defending him, mushi. He is more than stupid for bringing pressure on himself and wasting his career opportunity with this sort of rubbish. My point was more to the fact that recreational drug use is far more extensive in other areas of our society & business , with less headlines and fanfare, than that sought out regularly from our sporting corridors.

Yep but do they have in competition testing regimes. I don't think he's stupid for doing it in and of itself. I think he's stupid for doing after signing a contract saying he wouldn't and agreeing to a testing regime.

Yes but how far after. If it was immediately following then you’d have to assume the consumption happened prior, well unless he had something else in his magic spray. edit: to be clear I don’t think the staff knew, benching him would be the worst decision if they did

If you think this sort of drug use is prevalent in our sports, you ought to check out the bathrooms of our high flying business executives and various sector doyens of our society. It is now standard party accompaniment for those with enough cash to splash.
