Collingwood president Eddie McGuire to step down

By News / Wire

Eddie McGuire has announced he will step down as Collingwood president at the end of 2021.

McGuire was re-elected for a further three-year term in February.

But a tearful McGuire announced during a fan forum on Monday night that he would step down at the end of next season.

McGuire’s position had come under increased scrutiny in recent weeks following the Magpies’ messy trade period in which they shed a host of stars for mostly bargain-basement prices due to salary cap issues.

The biggest switch was that of gun midfielder Adam Treloar to the Western Bulldogs, with Collingwood reportedly set to supplement $1.5 million of the new contract over the next five years.

McGuire became president of Collingwood at the end of 1998, and he earned the “Eddie Everywhere” moniker due to his prominent role in the media and outspoken opinions.

During his time in charge, McGuire ensured Collingwood remained one of the competition’s heavyweights.

On the field, the Magpies have won just the one flag under Maguire’s leadership – in 2010 – but they also made grand finals in 2002, 2003, 2011 and 2018.

McGuire played a key role in appointing Mick Malthouse as coach ahead of the 2000 season.

Malthouse led the club to eight finals campaigns in his 12 seasons in charge.

But controversy reigned when McGuire orchestrated the coaching handover from Malthouse to Nathan Buckley in time for the 2012 season.

The transition was far from smooth, and Malthouse left with a chip on his shoulder.

McGuire’s tenure is the third longest of an AFL president.

He said that he had intended to make his call earlier in the year.

“COVID put paid to many finely laid plans,” McGuire said.

“In conjunction with the change of direction in my media life and the timing of my son’s schooling ending, the time is right and the future is strong for our club and for me to make this call.

“My passion and love and energy for Collingwood remains undiminished. My care for the competition remains deep and abiding.

“There will be more appropriate forums to thank people and I will extrapolate on my love for the club in due course.

“There will always be a reason to go on, another idea, another campaign, another battle. But in due course it will be with another president.

“As always, floreat pica, may the Magpie flourish.”

McGuire has never been far from controversy throughout his tenure, especially given his prominent role in the media.

Calls were loud for McGuire to resign in 2013 following an off-air gaffe when he suggested Sydney’s Indigenous star Adam Goodes be used to promote the musical King Kong.

The comments came just days after Goodes was racially abused by a Collingwood fan at a match.

In 2016, McGuire apologised for making a joke about drowning journalist Caroline Wilson.

McGuire managed to survive each controversy, and he will be aiming to finish his tenure on a high in 2021.

Unlike his critics here - every one of them - Eddie McGuire made the effort to effect change and succeeded. He committed his time and energy and vision for not two years or five but for twenty two. Try getting that from your average mug who knows everything! He is to be commended for his outstanding achievements in an intensely competitive environment. The people of substance who value that exceptionalism will say so in time. Well done Eddie McGuire.

Who else can match Eddie “Everywhere” other than Basil Zempilas? Will the incumbent MMM Perth breakfast host, Olympics Commentator, Telethon Host, Channel 7 Sport presenter and Perth Lord Mayor be able to squeeze another project in and run Collingwood from Perth? He is the man and he is already making a few gaffs so is primed up ready to go. Could he jump ship as an Eagles supporter and take on the Pies?

Who knows with hypotheticals Richie. Buckley offered to step aside from the senior role in 2011 to let Mick Malthouse have clear air for another flag or two. Would the Pies have gone any different? Who knows. Maybe, maybe not. Same with your point. Heading into Covid with a green president may have been worse. Who knows.

PTS, you haven't said anything that changes what I said. Just because no one is ready to take over, it doesn't mean you should stay on indefinitely. He has cultivated an environment that discouraged any challengers and yes, it helps that he did a good job most of the time, but Collingwood might have been better off without him 5 years ago.

Who knows Ghost. It depends if Buckley rates those flags over the rest of his life at Collingwood since. There’s a lot of life in between including meeting the mother of his boys. How do you look at sliding door moments in your life? Holistically or simplistically? Just like the Milne bounce or the Dom Sheed kick. If those were reversed and Milne gets the goal or Sheed misses, the timeline shifts and the results could well be the same.

If they were serious players Richie, they would have made a play regardless. I suspect most knew they were up against a clearly media savvy president who’s name, media clout and connections to important AFL , Govt and corporate heavyweights was simply too big a hurdle to jump. They didn’t challenge IMO not because of a stacked board but because they didn’t want to be defeated by the very attributes that helped McGuire survive some awful gaffes that would have brought down anyone else.

What the presidents role is: - Ensure the right board members are in place, these people should be club interest 1st and foremost. - Those board members are in place to ensure that all departments are operating at optimum - Those board members hold those departments accountable and reward and discipline when and where appropriate. List management and FD are currently and have been for some time departments that need disciplining. This has probably cost us flag(s) Clearly we are not administered at optimum and have not been for some time. What is not the presidents role - Being in media roles and broadcasting games of football that you're a president of a club in that league. This is seen as a conflict of interest. That's important, it's seen as - Sticking your nose in FD matters i:e the Beams trade - Making poor and glaring appointments for favoured people i:e the Gubby and Balme debacle (may have cost us a flag) - Being in the news every 5 minutes, usually amid controversial situations - Rejecting your assistant coaches offer to postpone a succession plan and not consult the members in that decision. (may have cost us a flag)

Sorry Peter, but the no one lining up for the job is a cr4p argument. No one lines up to challenge dictators. With a stacked Board and McGuire at the helm, what do you think would have happened to any serious challengers over the years?

You are are wrong Adam,in 1992 we played in the grand final against that side down at the Bay, it was a regulation victory, think it was 40-50 odd points ,quite comprehensive, and to top it of he won the Jack Oatey medal even with Scotty Hodges kicking his regulation 6 goals a game

Well there goes Buckley's shield now, be interesting to see how things go down, if they start off badly and by round 6 they're 2 and 4 or something similar. Or has bucks got another 3 years to rejuvenate the list after the clean out and draft. Time will time i guess.
