Maguire not afraid of more Tigers changes

By Scott Bailey / Wire

Michael Maguire has threatened to swing the axe after the Wests Tigers’ defence fell in a heap in Sunday’s 40-6 flogging at the hands of the Sydney Roosters.

The Tigers missed 37 tackles in the loss, as their left edge got exposed at Campbelltown with five tries down that side.

Joey Leilua missed eight on his own, while AJ Kepaoa and Luke Brooks missed three each to go with Luciano Leilua’s two.

Maguire showed last season he was not afraid to make changes, axing five players including Benji Marshall after a loss to Gold Coast last year.

He also made the call to split the Leilua brothers last year, after the team conceded 42 points to Newcastle in Round 2.

“I’ll make changes where I feel fit. We can’t accept that scoreline or that result,” Maguire said.

“We are all accountable to what we do. We have to look as a team how we fix or rectify that.

“It’s very disappointing.

“The players know what they need to do. It’s just the individuals who choose to do that keep moving forward.”

The Tigers do at least have James Roberts returning next week against Newcastle, after missing Sunday’s loss with a shoulder injury.

Maguire likes playing him alongside David Nofoaluma on the right side, potentially opening the door for changes on the left.

Meanwhile, Brooks had a 150th game to forget, not only being caught out in defence but making three kick errors in attack and gifting up seven-tackle sets.

“He’s disappointed with those kicks, without a doubt,” Maguire said.

“But we all play a part with ruck speed and how quick we want to play the ball.

“Just simple little parts of the game which are effort areas. If we tidy up those areas, it’s a different result.”

Yeah but my point is they weren’t even doing that badly. They weren’t setting the world on fire but they were in the game up to their eyeballs. There’s no way it was a first half performance that demanded a massive spray from the coach but they got a massive spray anyway. And then they came out in the second half and played like a completely demoralised team. There’s a time to send a rocket up your team and there’s a time to say “We’re going okay but there’s a few things we need to fix.” It just struck me as really bizarre, and a sign of bad coaching.

Well at the end of the day the players are not doing their jobs and we have all seen how the gently, gently approach isn't working out in society, maybe Madge believes in old fashioned ways? I'm not saying that is the right way, just saying that may be why.

I haven't heard of either kid Tony Albo easy to trust Madge but if these young guns have slipped off his radar I am disappointed in him. Do the Tigers have any young halves to replace Luke Brooks? Is Jock Madden any good? Otherwise, it's down to Mbye and Walters. Speaking of Billy Walters, does anyone know how far Kevvie's boy is off making his return? The kid has twice the talent and involvement of Luke Brooks.

"the evidence is mounting" An interesting comment from someone who ignores legal evidence when supporting convicted abusers in his team.

Much like the standing ovation one of your newly convicted heroes got in 2014 for winning Origin... Until you walk back your reprehensible views, consider more of this coming.

Yes, I like the look of Garner.

Paul, I have it on good authority that Madge has the full support of the Board. Nothing to see here.

I remember last season in a game against, I think, the Warriors, the Tigers were narrowly behind at half time but really hadn't been playing too badly and were well in the match. Cue footage of Maguire in his half-time talk kicking chairs around the dressing room and yelling at the players. I was stunned and clearly the players were, too - they came out in the second half and completely fell apart. It was one of the most extraordinary and disproportionate reactions from a coach that I'd ever seen and I wasn't surprised that it backfired. If I had a boss who acted like that I wouldn't feel motivated to do my best work for him.

He picked the team needs to aim up and wear some of the blame . If he couldnt see that the brothers and Brooks are all bad defenders The Roosters certainly did . History says that all three are been poor in the past. Looks like a long year

I do believe they let Momirovski go to get Daine Laurie. No team would want BJ.

Kept Joey Leilua, let Momirovski go. More changes like that one? No thanks!

The concern for Tigers fans I think is the coach. Clearly what ever Madge's trying to do is not working. Yes players can be blamed, but the Tigers didn't look like an enthusiastic footy team, more like one hoping they wouldn't get 50 put on them. As for Luke Brooks, I hope he's saving plenty of what he's currently getting. The way he's going, the Tigers will try and offload him, no-one would touch him and he might find himself out of the NRL pretty soon.

The only way forward for the Tigers, and some of the other obviously struggling clubs, maybe a new 'player swap' agreement like the Harry Grant/Paul Momo deal. It is evident that struggling clubs are finding it increasingly difficult to lure skilled players away from the power clubs, who seem to be able to horde, and hold onto them. These fringe players appear willing to sit behind the run on squad for a couple of years rather than to play for the likes of the Tigers. Not so long ago Billy Slater was injured and from memory the Storm had Drinkwater, Hughes, Munster and maybe even Papen to fill in. If this system continues then the gap between the top 8 and bottom 8 will widen to a stage where fans may lose interest.

When are they both contracted to? I’ve been on the Brooks isn’t any good band wagon for seemingly 120 odd games, but I think his issue is he’s a 3rd or 4th spine option. I think at Melbourne, Penrith, Roosters, Canberra, Souths or Parra he could succeed as their worst spine player (why I was glad Hughes turned down the warriors, I think that would have ended like Ben Hunt) He’s not elite at anything that I’ve seen, he needs to be given a narrow role and focus and have two or three other players generate the momentum. Sadly for the tigers there isn’t anyone you would say is capable of being the best spine player on a finals team. Even Laurie, he “could” be, but he isn’t yet. I hope they don’t Brooks him as well by anointing him too early.

Maybe the Tigers has become the club where players go to collect a paycheck just like the Titans were in recent years. The evidence is mounting. Garner made some really strong tackles and I had him as the other player who did well.

Nothing has changed in years, they merged the tigers and the magpies and ever since have been playing with the same commitment and passion as the west's teams of the past. None

I think the covid starvation of our normal entertainment diet meant we may have paid just a little too much attention to trial matches this year.

The Tigers pack played like pussycats instead of Tigers and Laurie and Liddle were the ONLY standouts in a team that looked like they were just going through the motions.
