Ricky Stuart was justified to walk out of his press conference

By Gazbo / Roar Guru

The standard of referees in the NRL has once again come under scrutiny after some contentious calls in Round 3.

The most notable were in the Raiders vs Warriors and Broncos vs Bulldogs matches, where two blatant forward passes weren’t called by either the referees or touch judges.

The pass from Adam Elliott to Kyle Flanagan was dropped, so it had no impact, but the same can’t be said for the forward pass thrown by Kodi Nikorima to Ben Murdoch-Masila in the 61st minute as Canberra went down to the Kiwi side.

Referee Henry Perenara was right in line with the pass, yet he didn’t rule on it?

Under NRL rules, the Bunker can’t judge on forward passes, which is in urgent need of a review as in a cases like this it leaves the NRL open to possible questions about the integrity of referees.

The NRL invested millions implementing a video review system so that they could eliminated incorrect decisions, yet they have not introduced technology to rule on forward passes.

As for those who point out that you take the good calls with the bad and that Ricky Stuart is notorious for blowing up about the referees, well in this case he showed remarkable tolerance at the press conference and held it together even though he must have been burning inside.

Sports opinion delivered daily

The incorrect ruling by Perenara came at a crucial stage. After the Raiders had been defending their lead tenaciously, it appeared to provide the Warriors with some momentum and on the other hand it must have left the Canberra players feeling deflated.

The sooner that the NRL implements technology to rule on forward passes in the lead-up to tries, the sooner we’ll have matches decided on their merits.

After all, if a grand final was decided on a decision like we witnessed on the weekend, the NRL would come under intense criticism and scrutiny.

He did have the self control to mind his manners. All the journo's were going to do is try to bait him. The press conferences are stupid anyway straight after the game. I'm with Stick all the way. You want a bit of passion in the game.

It’s part of Stuart’s job to attend the press conference, win, lose or draw just like all the other coaches. Storming out like that shows a total disrespect for the media and more importantly the Raiders supporters, who weren’t at the game. What will happen in the future when he needs the media on side

Like the test of character for “sticky” when as head coach of the Eels he axed half the Eels squad mid-season and then signed on with the Raiders before even attempting to rebuild the ruins he had created. He should have been called Nero after setting fire to the joint and watching it burn without even getting his fingers burnt. DON’T read that Geoff! :silly:

For sure. It would have been question asked but it is also a test of character. Dive deep into the cliche box if need be and priase his boys all he likes. There are plenty of times the coaches acknowledge a poor call without the level of abuse that constitutes a fine.

Hi Bill, Gee you would hope they’ve watched it, it was only a minute long. I think we are along the same lines. The Ricky presser is a storm in a teacup and choosing what was worse, the incident or Ricky’s reaction it’s the forward pass every day. It’s only getting elevated because someone is trying to justify it in an open forum. I think there are a lot of non-Broncos fans waiting to see them against Melbourne. I don’t think I’ll waste my tip this week…

Yep – we know we aren’t going to get a goody two shoes perfect gentleman Ricky who understands how difficult it is for the refs to make decisions in a high tempo stressful sporting contest – we are going to get a steamed up Ricky who has his heart on his sleeve trying to put a lid on his emotions and contain his rage. Unfortunately for Ricky he’s damned if he does and damned if he doesn’t. He’s criticised if he bangs on for 6 or 7 minutes about how bad the refs were and criticised if he disappears after one and a half minutes where he says very little.

And you didn't answer my question. If the field goal had been kicked would you be saying Easts weren’t good enough? Easts were lucky and the NRL admitted they ruined the grand final by dropping the two referees in 2020.

I’m St.George, viewing the 2019 grand final as an outsider and I assume you are an Easts fan unable to admit that the one referee overruling the other without letting the players know caused the Raiders to run the ball on the last tackle rather than kicking a field goal that would’ve put them in front. It made the NRL look incompetent, they added the second referee and did an and amateurish job in analysing the effect that two referees making different rulings on the one action would have. They didn’t think it through and probably thought it would be OK because they have two umpires in the AFL.

What a Sook! Nothing said about Raiders forward pass that lead to a try. Nothing said about the supposed tackle in the air by Tuivasa-Sheck that was a terrible call. I'm not a Warriors fan, but they get crap calls all the time, that effect outcome of games and their coaches still front up to press conferences. Ricky's just a poor leader and terrible example for his players. Your players need to be accountable for their missed tackles not be told, all good not your fault we lost, it was the ref.

I understand Geoff, but the idea is that the coach should at least attempt to answer a few questions before pulling up stumps. That was poor form IMO even if I totally understand Ricky's frame of mind and his disappointment, not just because of the loss but because of a few crucial calls that cost the Raiders the 2 points. Souths have been on the wrong side of plenty of those, but I'm sure no one wants me to start listing them here. In the end we both know Ricky would have been baited by the journo's with loaded questions pushing his buttons and trying to get a reaction. That reaction could have cost Ricky even more than the $20K no appearance fine. I agree that no consideration is ever given to the howlers that referees are allowed to get away with. Personally, and I know the vast majority here find the idea repugnant, I believe the referees should be able to sit with Annesley and answer questions each week at the end of the round looking at video footage of controversial decisions. I think they need to be just as accountable as coaches and players to answer the medias questions. I would have loved to have heard Henry Perenara's explanation on why the ball that went 2 metres forward was not called a forward pass. I would have loved that explanation of physics defying logic. Or Ben Cummins's explanation for his infamous #sixagain call in the 2019 GF which he flip-flopped on after the Raiders had submitted in the tackle believing they had a new set of six tackles. Why is that only the coaches and players are forced to endure these Salem witch hunts and trial by media?

I have to agree Nat. Ricky had every right to be upset, but he had to suck it up just like his players did. To leave the press conference without answering a single question was childish. That said, it probably saved him $20K - $30K in fines for comments he would have made to questions that would have been intended to rattle his cage.

"I’d hate for a team to lose a Grand Final because of a forward pass that some inept referee didn’t penalise." Or a phantom six again call that gets reversed after a side takes the tackle which robs a team of an opportunity to score in the GF. Or having a trainer intentionally play at the ball to rob a team of a try scoring opportunity with 4 attacking players chasing the kick. It's a long list Andrew but like you say; "don’t get me started!"

Not saying it’s true for you Nat, but I start to think that most of the Ricky haters here on heat about how bad he was, didn’t even watch the press conference and have simply piled on to hate on Stuart who as other have said, well has form, so he brings some of this on himself. But it wasn’t that bad, doesn’t really warrant all this vilification of him as a person and a coach. I honestly think it’s a storm in a teacup, hardly an outrage or rude, just short, and so he didn’t feel the need to sit there and fence with the journos trying to trap him into saying something bad about the ref, which lets face it they woulda tried. The refs performance should be fair game but is apparently a taboo subject now. I don’t much blame him for keeping it short. Nothing to see with this I say, let’s all move on. Bring on round 4. Can’t wait to see how your Broncos do against the Storm after a good win last week ;-) Bill
