Reds DIY player ratings vs Brumbies: The results

By The Roar / Editor

After the Reds stunned the Brumbies at the death to claim the Super Rugby AU final, we asked you to rate every player out of ten. Here is what you came up with.

Fraser McReight may have been the official man of the match, but your pick for the Reds’ best was Taniela Tupou. 63 per cent of you gave the Tongan Thor a 9 or higher for his efforts, the prop simply stupendous as he willed the Reds over the line. Perhaps if his late try attempt moments before O’Connor’s match-winner had got the nod, the award would have been his.

McReight was close behind with an average of 8.21, the number 7 showing just why he’s seen by many as the heir apparent to the Wallabies captaincy. In third was O’Connor on 7.94, who fittingly scored the winning try on a night where his leadership shone through.

Here are the full Reds player ratings from the Super Rugby AU final.

Lonergan was great around the park but he’s a liability at scrum time.

Stewart is a born journeyman. He’s got no feel for the game in attack. Has anyone seen him set up a try? He’s made two breaks all year and then butchered the opportunity, though people do a good job imagining the fine work they presume he did. Stewart tackles and hit rucks, but he wouldn’t make any other team in Soup rugby. Since Paisami’s injury the Reds’ backline has stunk - no one is running straight so JOC has no options. Fraser McReight would do a better job at 12.

Watch the game and see the big tackles and bodies he was scattering. I thought his aggression was an important cog.

Tate hasn’t been good all year.

Agree. I love JOC but he didn’t have a good game. And McReight did get MoM. JOC accepted the award for season MVP.

Kerevi has an excellent skill set.

Has Hamish Stewart? He’s made 2 breaks all year and both times ran away from his support and a tries gone begging. Kerevi would be a walk-up start to most rugby teams in the world. The idea that he wouldn’t be welcome at the Reds is absurd.

Well I for one would certainly welcome a backline of: 9 Thomas (is going to be better than McDermott within 2 years) 10 O'Connor 11 Vunivalu 12 Paisami 13 Kerevi 14 Dalgunu 15 Petaia Or something like that. Some scary talent in there!

I gave him a 6, the score guide had 6 points for essentially doing what is expected of you. As the kicker he simply did his job by accumulating points. This was the only game this year that did not really have any individual brilliance by JOC so 6 seemed like the correct score to me.

Kerevi has put grubbers/kicks through for other players. I agree it isn't something he does heaps, and hunter looks like he may be more gifted in that area, but it is something samu has shown an ability to do and has done in the past. I vividly remember him putting a pin point cross field kick in for Jock Campbell when in SA (against the bulls maybe) with the try line wide open and it went straight through his bread basket.

Has he learnt to pass?

Coach Goon doesn't seem to like Moses Sorovi, picking Kalani Thomas this year and Scott Malolua last year. Sorovi is much better than both of those and provies real energy off the bench; he is an accurate passer and runs like McDermott used to.

Something about "woods and trees" in this comment !

Kerevi would never have put a kick or grubbed through for another player. Stewart is needed to set the backline, like Anthony F in 2011

Tate’s service was average. The reds continued to use FMcR at half and rate 1 off in scrums ... Lots of dropped ball from Tate’s passes

He was reds captain and clearly developed his skills in the time he had. Rubbish assessment of the bloke. He had only been playing 12 for ~2 years by the time he left the reds/wallabies as it was!?! Impressive ability to adapt and build new skills in a short period of time.

reds didnt have mckay when kerevi was there and cheika's development of players is not as good as DR's.

Peter, Hunter has been developed well by all. HE obviously was open to how coaches could "mould" him into a better player (and they have). Samu seems to refuse that advice. Terrible ball security, limited in defence and "hogs" the ball. Dynamic ball runner, no doubt, but not a good team player.

Kerevi price would be too much for the Reds particularly with the quality of backline players they currently have
