Williams claims Raiders kicked him out the door

George Williams claims he was “kicked out the door” by Canberra after being let go by the Raiders with immediate effect.

Canberra confirmed the shock release of the star English halfback on Tuesday afternoon, after the 26-year-old failed to show up for training that day.

Unable to return home due to COVID-19 since his arrival in late 2019, Williams had been speaking to the club for weeks about his future with his contract due to expire next year.

But he insisted on social media on Tuesday night he had never wanted out with immediate effect, and had always been pushing to leave at the end of the year.

“I text to explain my mental wellbeing to the welfare manager?” Williams tweeted.

“I asked for a release weeks ago for the end of the season.

“Not once did I ask for an immediate release but instead of supporting me the club kicked me out the door.”

In a statement, the Raiders said Williams phoned the club to say he would not be up to playing against the Sydney Roosters on Saturday.

Williams’ partner Charlotte is also pregnant and the couple want to be with family in England when the baby is born.

While recognising the personal struggle Williams is facing, the Raiders finally found the situation untenable.

“George and his partner have asked on a number of occasions for a release to return to England to be closer to their families and we’ve decided to grant their request,” Raiders CEO Don Furner said.

“George withdrew from training today and from the game this weekend which highlighted to the club the seriousness of George’s request.

“Over the past several weeks we have supported George and provided him with the best welfare support we could, however as a club we felt that his position at the club moving forward became untenable.”

Sam Williams has been named at halfback to play against the Roosters, after regularly being the club’s 18th man in recent years and filling in for Jack Wighton last week.

The Raiders can now use the salary cap space freed up by the remainder of Williams’ contract for the rest of the season, as well as his salary for 2022.

Williams joined the Raiders at the start of 2020 on a three-year deal after the club paid a hefty transfer fee to lure the Wigan Warriors champion.

Please just tell me if you still think Autism is a mental illness? Ricky Stuart having a kid with autism or any other developmental disorder does not give him any understanding of mental illness.

That makes some sense. The message of don't study and keep up your goal kicking didn't exactly fly with the parents hahaha

Fully agree "Kurt S", as he just comes out with derogatory and abusive comments that he thinks can cover up his ignorance on both counts of Stuart playing career and autism and especially Williams that hasn't got any mental health issues that can't be diagnosed by specialist Raiders therapists.

Will George Williams be paying the pro rata fee for his release from his last UK club? The raiders had to pay that fee and did so in anticipation that the player would fulfill his obligation. Covid has played a part. But there is a strong smell of player managers involved in this.

Simon, Stuart came from a union background and would have slotted into the Wallaby’s team for an extended period without too much trouble at all had he continued on that path. That might have something to do with why the school asked him.

You are unbelievable as it shows that you have absolutely no idea of what you are talking about as there are many aspects of autism which could be mild, moderate or severe and in the severe cases its both a mental and a development disorder, anyway it seems that you have no idea, as just by your comments tone it reflects your character. I'm sure that the Raiders have people with much more expertise than your arrogant grammatically incorrect 'you can takes yours and jog on' comment!

like Izzy Folau, and he still has a contract, just came back to Aus and refused to go back. Catalans gave him a chance when no one else would even look at him. They took all the flack on the chin and that is how he repays them.

How many Aussie players have signed in the UK, and returned early to Australia because they were homesick? Some to sign eventually sign with a NRL team, and some because they just didn’t like it over there. There is a risk on the club when they sign an international player.

Is Autism a mental illness? I think its a developmental disorder. Now no offence meant so you can takes yours and jog on. Unless you think Williams has a developmental disorder that is.

Something happened to that second last sentence. Should have read "I think bailing out of training and not wanting to play on the weekend was the final straw'.

Diplomacy is not allot of these guys strong points, IMO he just wanted a pay out that is why he went on with all this shenanigans and of course he would say “the Raiders sacked him’ anyway not a great loss to the NRL as getting home sick is no excuse for not forfilling a contract that he wont get in England again. Fully agree with the Raiders.

Simon you are just talking nonsense as Stuart has an autistic daughter that I’m sure keeps Ricky very well up on mental therapy and fills his time up! I know as I’ve got an autistic son and it’s a very very challenging thing. Stop knocking something that you don’t have any idea about as your language is pretty gross also and reflects your attitude mate!

If things have got to the point where the guy can’t face even turning up it’s telling me is the guy is struggling with his mental well-being. Not uncommon for leave in this circumstance.

Bateman didn't exactly endear himself to the club with the manner in which he left. Talking up his salary prospects in the lead up to the Grand Final in 2019, being courted by other clubs including the Bulldogs trying to up the offer from the Raiders for him to stay, continual talk about being homesick and missing his daughter ... whinge whinge whine whine. You didn't hear Hodgson, Whitehead and Sutton carrying on like that. Bateman really sullied his reputation in his second year at the club and I suspect the club ands supporters were glad to see the back of him the way he was carrying on. He didn't exactly set the world on fire in his second season either which people tend to forget. I can understand George missing his family after COVID has restricted any flights between England and Australia, and they have a baby on the way - but surely he just sees out his contract till the end of the season and heads home. George had a contract to fulfill and can't just decide he doesn't want to go to training and doesn't want to play on the weekend. What message is that sending? I suspect the club just ran out of patience and told him it may be best for everyone if he went home.

Regardless of anything, it’s just a garbage act to go announcing an agreement to the world before the other party has actually agreed to it. Or incompetent. The wheels are falling off that place.

George told the club he didn't want to turn up to training on Tuesday or play against the Roosters this weekend - what is that telling you? He'd asked numerous times for an early release from his contract which got into the media. George wants to head back to England for family reasons. He and his partner have a young kiddie on the way in a couple of months. His heart obviously wasn't in playing for the club so why have him hang around for the rest of the season if he isn't going to put in? The club had been trying to manage his mental well being for weeks by the sound of it. I think bailing out of training and wanting player was the final straw. Sounds as though it could have been managed better but I'm not sure the club or Ricky should be copping all the blame here.
