Reds buoyed after re-signing key duo

By Ed Jackson / Wire

The Queensland Reds have secured the future of two important forwards with captain Liam Wright and Angus Scott-Young signing new deals.

Key back-rowers Liam Wright and Angus Scott-Young have both signed contract extensions with the Queensland Reds.

Captain Wright and workhorse Scott-Young both passed 50 appearances for the Reds this year and will stay on at Ballymore until at least the end of the 2022 Super Rugby campaign.

Wright – who made his debut for the Wallabies in 2019 – endured a frustrating 2021 campaign with the 23-year-old sidelined for the majority of the season with a foot injury but he returned in time to play in Queensland’s Super Rugby AU grand final win over the Brumbies.

The 24-year-old Scott-Young, the son of former Wallabies forward Sam Scott-Young, was one of only two players to feature in all 14 of Queensland’s games in 2021, starting all but one.

Wright and Scott-Young are two of 11 Reds players to have signed new deals after their successful campaign this year.

Agreed. Both should be in the current Wallaby squad. Good for Australia, good for their progression!

Maybe that was the players choice........Pretty sure the Reds would have happily sign them for much longer. Both excellent players and must be on the edge of being in the squad.

My thoughts exactly...I wonder if it has anything to do with the broadcast deals with Ch 9 and Stan and therefore the money available for player contracts...particularly those who aren't regular Wallabies..?

Yeah, it kind of sounds like they're giving themselves one more year to crack Wallabies before signing overseas. Unfortunately, quite predictable and understandable in this day and age.

Fantastic news for Queensland. Whether they are in the Test squad or not, they are vital to the Reds.

I hope Wright is brought into the TRC squad. I still think his breakdown work could be a handy foil to the rest of the backrow. But, I'd be surprised to see him make a 23 at this rate given Rennie's preferences so far.

"will stay on at Ballymore until at least the end of the 2022 Super Rugby campaign" Not sure if I've got this right but they've both signed for only 1 year extensions? Hoping there isn't anything more to read into that but I would've hoped it would be until the end of the 2023 Super Rugby season and heading into the World Cup.

Good news. Two very good players coming into what should be their prime. The sort of players Australian rugby needs to keep playing here if we are to build depth and quality.

There's no way that Hooper, Valenti, Swinton are better than Wilson and ASY.

good news for qld. For aust good news Wright didn't look to go o/s after being left out of the wallaby squad. IMO with small adjustments / work ons and 5kg of muscle he would be an ideal 6 in the style of Fardy for the wallabies.

I've always rated Scott-Young. He needed to be included in the squad. Great engine, physical at the breakdown, and the size and versatility to cover lock if needed. Great news for QLD

It’s great to see Qlders wanting to stay in Qld and play for the Reds. Both great players with futures in Qld.
