'Mentally scarred for life': Australia needs to stop yearly Tests with New Zealand

By Cassandra / Roar Rookie

It may be a little left field, but I think it is worth saying we should stop yearly Tests with New Zealand.

For the present.

And if we want to build a team that is competitive, give the team and the coach a chance by letting them work together for months – not weeks – and at the start of the season, not the end of it.

People may say I’m a ratbag and they may well be right.

But have a look at the Australian cricket team over the years.

They had time to build a team without having to front both their state or club week in and week out.

My suggestion is give these lads a camp that actually has some chance of getting results.

If it takes six months, it’s better than sending undercooked combinations out there to be mentally scarred for life.

We won’t be better man on man for years to come.

But a good team will knock over individual geniuses.

Let the men in gold become a team for a change. Let them eat, sleep and train their guts out until they start to pack down for a feed at breakfast.

Let the brand of the Wallabies be a brand where grit not glory is the motto.

And when you don’t want to leave your mate behind as you board that bus, you may get to a stage where everyone has the chance to shine by playing for each other.

And in the process, having pride to play for your country.

Actually the WB's are hard to knock back mentally. Ask any AB. They aren't scarred for life, every year they believe, you can see the bitter disappointment on their faces when the AB's rack up a cricket score in games that matter - as in that wasn't supposed to happen to us! If their best players like McMahon would've stayed in Aus and continued to develop into test players they could've been, instead (unlike AB's) of selling themselves overseas, WB's would be more consistent- just saying it's a drain on aus that nz rugby doesn't have for the most part. But AB's have been the best in world for most of 100 years, so i think losing to that, should be taken in perspective. As likes of John O'Neil used to say, it makes WB's better playing best year in year out.

Gotta get them back to actually playing CLUB footy first , I think they r missing what footy really feels like, it’s a different game going from Super to tests especially 4 younger players. Blacks & Boks r licking there chops ! Whinging about having 3 Bledisloe test doesn’t do anything going back to 1 gives the Ozies more chances of winning just 1 test ! Is just winning the Bled what they r motivated 4 ?

Given that the current three-Test BC series contract expires this year, you're getting your wish. And remember: JON originally pushed for this three-Test concept to help guarantee revenue (back when the Wallabies were more competitive). The contract was renewed under the same conditions. That's why Sydney always hosted a game when it was Australia's turn to host two games.

I'm not against your 1-match suggestion, but really, you should stop digging on the rest of it.

"The Bled should be 1 game only, the first game of the RC." This would coincide nicely with making Sydney the first match every year.

And therein, lies the "catch-22" for Rugby Australia. Less teams gives strength but, provides less revenue share. More teams diminishes strength but, provides greater revenue share. It's a no-win scenario, whichever way its looked at.

Thank you for your respectful and considered reply. Hooper is the last of the toxic losers left. He needs to go now as as i said, he cannot play rugby at 7 against the big boys. He is a nothing player. Hooper was worked out many years ago by Scotland England Ireland Wales SA France Argentina. The Wallabies have been constantly thumped by these teams since the child has been number 7, this has never happened to the Wallabies before. That is why the Wallabies are ranked 7th. That is Hooper`s legacy.

It’s a twisted kind of love-hate thing, Numps. The greater the hate, the deeper the love for Hoops. It’s quite sweet really, but sad.

I disagree. A way to build a well coordinated Wallabies team is to reduce the number of teams which play the NZ SR teams to 3. This will condense the talent into 3 teams rather then 5 teams. It will make it easier to indoctrinate the players into how the Wallabies play, and build combinations which can transfer into the Wallaby setup. I would propose SRAU to be maintain as it was this year. From the 5 teams, NSW and QLD can select the best 15 players of their respective state origins. The 3rd team, the All State Barbarians (for a lack of a better name) can select their best 15 from the VIC, WA, etc origin players, the players which don't make the origin criteria, and the remaining players from NSW and QLD. This will ensure the best 45 in Australia be playing across all 3 sides. The same process will apply for the bench, and the extended squad.

This is such a storm in a teacup. Did you know that the northern hemisphere teams play each other more often than southern teams!?! Oh the shock and horror. Some of them lose more games then they win too  Wallabies have one of the best records against the ABs of any other team of the last decade. And I dare wager, one of the key reasons why the wallabies remain competitive against the rest of their international opponents is their constant testing against the best, which is the ABs. Bring it on!

The Bled should be 1 game only, the first game of the RC. I don't mind this idea; alternating venues. Infrequency will certainly ramp up the relevance of the fixture for both fan bases. As a one-off it may provide more opportunity for the Wallabies too. The revenue argument means it probably wouldn't fly however...

I think its just a soft underbelly that seems to have crept into Australian team sports, just look at the Olympics, you get to see amazing hardness in so many of the Australian individuals, runners, high jumpers, Canoeists etc, yet team sports which have every conceivable back room specialist position covered to get these teams up and running cant produce half of that from a group of guys that have it laid on for them. The cattle is there for the Wallabies...they are just soft....with great training stats.

I think the players are the ones who require the investment and belief from a personal standpoint only, RA can give them all the nice gyms, doctors, nutritionists and fancy cars they like, but if the players then just look at the stats and say 'yeah, i'm as quick as any of the Barretts 'cos my training stats say so', then they are dead in the water to start with..top two inches stuff.
