CONFIRMED: Times set for The Rugby Championship double headers

By The Roar / Editor

SANZAAR has released the times for The Rugby Championship double headers matches in Queensland next month after earlier confirming the Wallabies and All Blacks third Bledisloe Cup game in Perth.

The double headers will be played in the evenings with the first game each day kicking off at 5.05pm AEST and the second match at 8.05pm AEST.

The teams have a mix of both time slots.

SANZAAR CEO, Brendan Morris said: “This is an exciting announcement as it confirms a first for international rugby with a series of four double-header weekends of top quality rugby action.”

“It is a unique opportunity for Queensland rugby fans and indeed the global broadcast audience to watch the best players and teams go head-to-head in consecutive matches at the same venue on the same day, across the four weekends.”

The Perth Bledisloe will take place on Sunday September 5 at 2pm local time which is 4pm for the east coast of Australia and 6pm in New Zealand.

Rugby Australia’s preference was to play the game on Saturday night but AFL have first use of Optus Stadium should it choose to host a final and therefore Sunday was the best option to lock in.

Ticket holders who purchased tickets for the Test match scheduled for Saturday, 28 August at Optus Stadium will have their tickets automatically transferred to the match on Sunday, 5 September and those who can’t make it are entitled to a refund.

“From speaking with the Wallabies team, they are desperate to put on a great show for the Perth community – and confirming this Test is great news for them and the fans in Western Australia,” Rugby Australia CEO Andy Marinos said.

“It’s fantastic on all fronts to have the opportunity for the Wallabies to play at this iconic stadium again, and entertain the Perth public that have embraced them so warmly over the past two weeks.”

The All Blacks have already won the Bledisloe Cup but the match is crucial to both team’s Rugby Championship hopes.

If you cannot see how extremely conservative the NZRU decision was to expect a guarantee that September and October tests will be played and where it will be played when SANZAAR worked on 6 different scenarios for the games to be played I cannot assist. The likelihood that the Rugby Championship will be cancelled was never credible unless you take a worst case outcome (extremely pessimistic) view – which NZRU did. People are very poor at assessing these likelihood of low probability scenarios. Another example is that NZRU allowed the All Blacks to travel as they now think they have “100% certainty” on where and when the tests will be played – they are kidding themselves. Are you kidding? Certainty is absolutely required when planning for an international tournament. That's management 101. Games and venues absolutely need to be finalised before movement begins. Remember: a virus spreads because people move around And the risk is growing; two truck drivers that crossed into WA were found to be positive. One of their contacts returned to Perth before their test results were made known..

Thanks Piru. Would be more appropriate if it came from the NZRU and addressed to the WA rugby supporters.

Not just WA and Queensland but I am also delighted for all the people suffering from lockdowns and depression that the games are going ahead. It gives them something to take their minds off their current situation even if it is only for a short time, good luck to all the teams and my thoughts to those doing it tough

I like to help the Australian’s with their spelling. They maybe located in a desert and don’t have the resources. My weakness has been more with phases and words like pre and post and balls and heart I get them all mix up. Nearly cost me a job at a bank once. When I was offered the job I said. “One moment please while I just ask my balls” I got the job. I remember a girl at the bank talking relationship issues. I screamed across the office, “just follow your balls!” Then pickup the phone: “Would you like an underdaft sir?…just follow your balls on that one …”

Based on what Nine/Stan have done so far with rugby we'd assume that non-Aussie games will be exclusive to Stan.

I was really looking forward to watching aus v pumas in Canberra, but in these times of Covid we need to appreciate what we can get which is why I appreciate the opportunity for any rugby fan to go to a game.
