Reynolds insists no intent in Latrell hit

By News / Wire

South Sydney captain Adam Reynolds mostly dodged questions about Latrell Mitchell on Monday but afforded the star fullback a concise public defence by insisting no NRL player intentionally hurts another.

Amid a maelstrom of controversy, Mitchell will miss the rest of the season for last Friday night’s reckless tackle on Sydney Roosters centre Joey Manu who has undergone facial reconstructive surgery as a result of the hit gone wrong.

Mitchell’s six-week suspension has now put Souths’ premiership hopes in jeopardy with one round to play before finals.

Mitchell has come under intense criticism in the days following the incident, with NSW Blues teammate James Tedesco calling for the fiery young star to find some balance in his game.

Some have even insisted the 24-year-old acted with deliberate force – a claim which Reynolds was eager to deny.

“No player goes out there to deliberately hurt someone, that’s basically all I’m going to say on the situation,” the Souths skipper said.

“We can’t control what’s happened now, we’ve got to move on and worry about what’s in front of us.

“It’s a good opportunity for some of the younger boys to get a game this weekend.”

Mitchell has since reportedly reached out via text to apologise to Manu, with the pair close friends from their time as Roosters juniors over many years.

However, Souths have shut down around him, making minimal public comment in the fall out of the grudge match which finished 54-12 in their favour.

Like Tedesco, Rabbitohs centre Campbell Graham said aggression is part of what makes Mitchell a special player.

“I don’t want to see Latrell change his game at all,” he said.

“I love what he brings on the field, I love his aggression and his intent on the field.

“Sometimes things go wrong on the footy field and that’s it.

“Sometimes you’re on the wrong end of it and it’s a shame, you don’t ever want to see anyone from opposition teams get hurt, that’s not what our game’s about.”

Meanwhile, Reynolds confirmed he would miss Saturday’s clash with St George Illawarra to rest up a knee injury, while Blake Taafe is expected to be named as Mitchell’s replacement at fullback.

“Ruin Latrell Mitchell’s life”. Bit of an over reaction. Unfortunately he reads his own press, telling him how good he is. However his BS excuse for the farm episode & his continual dirty play is impacting on his image. Doesn’t need any help to be disliked by fair minded fans. I couldn’t fathom why Robbo let him go however now I understand. High maintenance player who needs pampering hence doesn’t fit in with Roosters culture.

No it doesn't. Unless your point was to demonstrate how listening to you is pointless.

My main point still stands regardless. The only difference between the Radley and Mitchell incidents is that Manu got injured and the other guy didn't. Radley was just lucky he didn't inflict damage otherwise maybe he would have had his reputation dragged through the mud as well.

This article is another gee up (unfortunately) just like the interviewers that interviewed Reynolds, some of them guys interviewing Reynolds were like a dog with a bone, they just never gave up! IMO Reynolds being the captain of Souths was very sensible to just answer consistently with the same answers, as doing anything else would make this a back and forth to dig more dirt and come up with more lies and ruin LM’s life. “Get Over It Folks” as its about time that all you whingers got onto another subject and whinged about something else!

In the end kk, you're right. Parents might not be able to recall the details of Mitchell's action this time next year, but they'll certainly remember the press photographs of Manu's face. About the time they're enrolling their child at their local soccer club.

Robbo grasps that, effectively his press rant took the heat away from the 54 to whatever smashing his team got and onto the bunker. Straight out of Wayne's World.

Really Steve I remember him saying he needed to change the technique May 23rd Roosters coach Trent Robinson has conceded Victor Radley may need to make a big change to his tackling technique in the aftermath of Saturday night’s shock defeat to the Broncos. .... “As far as I know they aren’t changing, so he is going to have to get it in check,” Robinson told media post-game. Also if you look at his comments about Latrell I'm pretty sure he also said he loves his aggression - just you can't hit guys high.

I've said a number of times on this forum I want the really good players to play every week. Sure some will drop thanks to injury but should not be forced to sit out matches thanks to these types of incidents. I don't think it matters much who does the illegal hitting, it simply has to stop.

Gees people have very short memories. Campbell Graham said the exact same thing almost every commentator and punter were saying when Radley was suspended for a high shot. "We love how Victor plays...please don't change your aggression." Now because its Latrell the very same people are saying the exact opposite. In fact I seem to remember Robbo coming out and saying he doesn't want Radley to change a thing. Kind of changed his tune now hasn't he? Maybe if Victor had busted the guys jaw it would be different but luckily for him he didn't. But that's mostly through luck rather than good management.

I don't and neither do you. Mitchell's public persona is all we see. Him not apologising publicly is a fact, him apologising personally is your guess. You surely can't be narcissistic enough to regard your guess as more believable than obvious fact. What Mitchell does and says personally is irrelevant to me, and to his and Manu's fans. I guarantee many Mitchell followers, especially kids, would benefit from seeing their hero show some contrition in the public eye for what was a very public act.

R11 against Broncos Radley was put on report 4 times and sin binned twice. Same situation, team mates urging him not to change his style. Well, he didn't...that worked out well..

My point is How do you know Mitchell hasn’t apologised? He may have done it privately. You seem to be the one that’s fragile

After seeing replay after replay I'm more convinced then ever Mitchell went in with intent. If Manu didn't bend then it's likely he would have copped the shoulder in the chest, but the swinging arm from Mitchell looked like it was aimed at a higher target and would have collected Manu around the head, possibly the same result.

What a stupid comment. Never did I infer or want an apology. And I don't know or care what Mitchell did or does in private and neither should you. I noted that Mitchell has not apologised to Manu, as the previous poster said, at least publicly. That's a simple fact, and it doesn't care about your fragile feelings.

Is anyone arguing intent to cause the damage he did? What I would argue is foreseeability. LM went into a collision extremely recklessly. It was clearly foreseeable, given the height and speed, that injury was not just a possibility but a likelihood. I would like to think he regrets it. He is an amazing player but at times he is a petulant child. I hope this incident matures him and he provides (or has provided) a heartfelt apology to Manu. He should serve his time and be welcomed back into the game but if he continues to be one of the games most suspended players his loading on these type of incidents will continue to grow and he will find his value to his team and the game in general will diminish greatly. I’m frankly more concerned for Manu who is clearly one of the best players and by all accounts one of the most humble and likeable guys in the game. Manu, along with Tedesco has been the Roosters best and most consistent player this year. He has played every position in the backline bar 1/2. He is a very big loss to a club already decimated by injury. I do wonder how all those South’s apologists would be reacting if the roles had been reversed and LM or Walker or Reynolds had been injured in the same fashion.

” I haven’t heard “sorry” from him, ” Did you think that he would apologise to you? I think that the apology would be directly to Manu – it doesn’t need to be public.

It will be fun when the two clubs meet again and roll out the players from both teams who claim they aren't going to ''change their game''. Maybe big Sammy could come back for one game. The irony of ''Victor The Inflictor'' frothing at the mouth from the sideline unable to get stuck in to Mitchell with his ''unchanged game'' because it's the stubbornness to stick to a pattern which meant he wasn't on the paddock to deal with a player with the same attitude as himself.
