Voss closing in on Carlton job: reports

By Oliver Caffrey / Wire

Michael Voss has touched down in Melbourne as the Brisbane Lions legend closes in becoming Carlton’s new AFL coach.

Voss left South Australia, where he has lived for the past seven years as an assistant coach with Port Adelaide, on Wednesday.

The 46-year-old will sit down with the Blues, including new chief executive Brian Cook, for his final interview this week.

Due to border restrictions, Voss’ previous communication with Carlton about becoming the club’s new coach has happened via video calls.

He is the hot favourite to fill the vacancy left by David Teague, who was sacked in August after two-and-a-half seasons in charge.

Voss and Richmond assistant Adam Kingsley are the only ones left vying for the job after Carlton’s numerous approaches to Alastair Clarkson were knocked back by the four-time Hawthorn premiership coach.

If Voss lands the role, as expected, it would cap off an interesting journey to leading the Blues.

He was sought out by Carlton at the end of 2007 to replace Denis Pagan, but Voss opted not to interview for the role.

In 2019, Voss decided to interview after Carlton sacked Brendon Bolton, but Teague was ultimately given the job following a groundswell of fan support.

The three-time Lions premiership captain had two years in the media after his Hall of Fame playing career end in 2006, before being appointed Brisbane coach ahead of the 2009 season.

His tenure started in promising fashion, taking the Lions to the semi-finals in his first year in charge, but it was all downhill from there.

Voss was sacked in 2013, after leading the Lions to just 42 wins from 107 games.

Carlton should have gone for one of the other assistant coaches at Port. Someone else has.

Not a first, second or even a third choice let's be completely honest here. He was a pretty abysmal failure at the Lions as a coach. His players didn't want him and I am surprised he is a sucker for punishment. But the lure of the big bucks must be too much. Maybe a series of one year contracts, until someone better comes along.

Voss is far from my (or it seems the clubs) preferred option but it has at least got plenty of experience and hopefully learned from some of his mistakes. The big question is what sort of quality assistants can we put around him, rumours of Scarlett being poached as a defensive coach are more than welcome and Caro seems to think Nigel Lappin has been approached by Voss (which would mean Voss, Lappin and Luke Power would all be coaching at the Blues) which from a distance seems a good pick up. I still strongly believe there is a high quality team at the Blues waiting to emerge (which should only improve with the addition of Hewett and Cerra) hopefully we can find a way to get them to reach their potential.

Voss, McRae, Leppa all will be coaching at a high level in 2022. Who else from that flag winning group?

Clearly he wasn't the preferred option from Carlton's point of view...... But I think Voss has learnt from his mistakes at Brisbane and will be a much better coach second time around. I personally love the idea of the sacked coach getting a second go. See how much professional growth they've had from the experience.

True but I think this season in particular teague was destined to faill. He didn’t have the support around him to challenge for the eight and he still put out the best year since 2013

It's difficult for me to be enthused. Musical chairs. Carlton gets an ex coach. Tegue goes to whoever. No passion. Watch for the same old crap in 2 years time.

Looked pretty happy last week. They didn’t look stressed at all going into a sudden death game and think they’ll cope pretty well this week. You guys are up against it but were impressive as well. Whichever team is 1% off their game will lose.
