Muslim AFLW player stands down from GWS game after refusing to wear pride jersey on religious grounds

By The Roar / Editor

Muslim Greater Western Sydney player Haneen Zreika has opted to miss this weekend’s match after deciding not to wear the team’s pride jumper on religious grounds., according to multiple media reports.

Zreika was the first Islamic player to play AFL Women’s after making her debut in 2019. The Age said she had grappled with the decision in recent weeks before deciding to withdraw from Friday’s clash against the Western Bulldogs.

The paper reported it understood Zreika addressed her teammates earlier this week regarding her decision “in what was an emotional and educational session for all players, which includes a number of LGBTQIA+ community members”.

She played in last year’s pride round, but the Giants did not wear a pride jumper.

“Zreika – who supports her teammates and their beliefs – strives to be a leader within the Muslim community and it is understood that wearing the jumper in Friday’s game could compromise her standing within her community,” wrote News Corp.

“She is likely to attend the game at Henson Park.

“It has been an unchartered situation for the club, which remains firmly committed to its support of AFLW Pride Round, its specially designed jumper and what it stands for.”

The AFL has declined to comment.

I think there should be social justice and progress. It can be demonstrated the AFL due to scandals coverups and not paying tax doesn't have the credibility to lead though

Actually, I haven't given an opinion on her actions at all. My only purpose here is to highlight the hypocrisy and intellectual dishonesty of those who pilloried Folau whilst pretending that this issue is different.

The vicious ones are almost without exception the "progressive" types. They're probably the millenium people you're referring to. It stems from the belief that they are morally infallible. This is the social media generation, where people are encouraged to pick a side and have access to huge amounts of information that supports their prejudices and preconceptions. Social media is very very bad for our society. Fortunately, most debates on here are reasonably objective and amicable, other than the odd ideologue isn't used to arguing their ideas and find themselves in a place where they can't justify their position so they resort to name-calling and abuse.

The woman clearly does not want to conform just for the sake of conforming. If she believes a certain thing, then let her be. It's her right to think and act as her values dictate and nobody can force her to think one way or another. As long as she does not impose her views on others and keeps them to herself I can see nothing wrong in what she has done. She has not abused anyone nor extracted a financial or political advantage at anyone's expense. She should be admired and respected for being who she is and respecting the views of others. I dont want to pass judgment on Muslims or Gay Rights Activists. Let's leave things as they are not stir up as hornet's nest unnecessarily.

If she were a true Western Sydney person she wouldn't be playing AFL at all.

"Wives, be subject to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord" Here's another doozy "Do not wear clothing woven of two kinds of material. Leviticus 19:19" How's that one working out for ya? This one's my absolute fave though "You may purchase male or female slaves from among the foreigners who live among you. You may also purchase the children of such resident foreigners, including those who have been born in your land. You may treat them as your property, passing them on to your children as a permanent inheritance. You may treat your slaves like this, but the people of Israel, your relatives, must never be treated this way. Leviticus 25:44-46 NLT" Sweet, off to the slave market I go, I guess it's cool to own slaves because my God says so right? Right? Back on topic, fundamentally you believe being gay is a choice, there is no other reasonable explanation for your argument and it's dissapointing I've gotta say, I don't really care if your silly enough to believe this schamozzle, but the minute you cower behind as an excuse to segregate or discriminate you've lost my respect.

Jesus never said that. End of your silliness there. The women/lord bit equally silly. No wonder you're angry. You have wrong information. It's worth checking things out before you base a world view on hearsay.

Please put the bit where Jesus says it's cool to have slaves as long as they aren't Jewish into context for me, or that bit where it says all women should worship their men like a lord, how about the bit that doesn't describe where all of a sudden all these people that were no relation to Adam came from, I could go on, it's filled with stupidity. I've always felt you can't have one foot in faith, your in for a penny, in for a pound, people that pick and choose scripture, or say you can't look at it literally are the biggest hypocrites of all, it's either your book, or it's not

Is the AFL an organization that manages people who play and watch aussie rules? Or it an organization that promotes different social causes? Or both? Stick to the footy, I say.

The AFL sat back twiddling their thumbs about the Jobe Watson Brownlow controversy. The poor bloke settled the matter himself by handing back his Brownlow voluntarily. These AFL executives probably don't have a clue about how to handle this whole ridiculous situation.

In the past, yes. You seem to not know that there are many and varied religions and even more variations of expression within those religions. I get anti-fundamentaliam; fundamentalism is the problem with those religion-based conflicts. Fundamentals are, however, a tiny minority of those religions. They are powerful and scary, because cashed-up loops are driving those groups. That's not most people of faith. Yes, I know the scriptures well, have read them many times and can easily see where fundamental loops misuse scripture as a weapon. Those same cultural mis-readiings are easy to dismiss...with those same scriptures read in context.

Catholic School was fine, no dirty old brothers, good footy team, religious education and bible studies were laughable. You ever read it? Like really read it? Does it not strike you as ironic that a religious person is telling someone else not to worry about what others believe? Cities having been conquered and the masses slaughtered in the name of some god or other for thousands of years. I too often like to hypocrite.

Jacko, you previously said, "in Australia, Muslim women are free to choose". If that was exactly true, why would this decision have anything to do with her current or future standing within the Muslim community? They are free to choose aren’t they? Surely you are not inferring that the Islamic faith only endorses & promotes individuals with homophobic views, are you?

That's certainly not what I'm saying. You, however, seem to have decided that's what you want me to be saying. I'm really suggesting you'd be less bitter if you settled for whatever it is you believe and don't trouble yourself with what others do or don't believe. Live your own life (and don't let horrible, irrelevant old, dead Catholic brothers have such a hold on you).

She made the decision based on her own standing within the Muslim community and it had nothing to do with her parents or anything else. She wants to progress further within the Muslim community and felt supporting this publically wasnt in her best interests. Looks like you 100% get your way then as she isnt being punished at all. Good eh!
