If Lance Franklin boots his 1000th major on Saturday, don’t run onto the field unless you are prepared to stump up a lot of cash.
The AFL will warn fans that they could be slugged a hefty fine if they follow one of the traditions of the game and swarm onto the field for the milestone moment.
Franklin needs five goals to become just the sixth player in VFL/AFL history to achieve the feat and the first since Gary Ablett snr did so 26 years ago.
Tony Lockett, Gordon Coventry, Jason Dunstall and Doug Wade are the only other members of the 1000 club.
Accor Stadium’s policy is a $5500 fine for ground invaders during sporting events and extra security is being planned for Saturday’s Sydney derby against the Giants.
The AFL is likely to usher Franklin straight from the field once he gets his 1000th goal like they did when he booted his 100th in the 2008 season back when he was playing for Hawthorn.
AFL CEO Gillon McLachlan did not seem too worried about fans running on for Buddy’s big moment, telling AFL 360 on Tuesday night: ““Well, officially, you shouldn’t run on the ground, but it would be a good look, wouldn’t it?
“Leave [the players] alone. I can’t endorse but it wouldn’t be the worst. It’s just a big deal to have 1000 goals. Who knows when it happens again?”
McLachlan added he wouldn’t be surprised if Franklin was moved back if he kicked four against the Giants, alluding to the fact the Swans are back at the SCG for a home game in Round 2 against Geelong next Friday.

Perhaps I'm reading it wrong, but there's been a couple of others since Gary Ablett snr, including Tony Lockett. They had the same warnings on the day he broke Coventry's record, even having it announced straight after the record breaking goal and although it may have stalled the rush, it certainly didn't stop it and I don't recall any fines being issued.

There's either a franger or a nose bleed stopper under every chair for Buddy's 1,000th. Always practise safe crowd control. ---------- Every under 18 yr old should run out. Very few games have this tradition.

Great way to start the season with the unfurling of the premiership flag. Surprised that the AFL didn’t implement this decades ago.

The sooner 1,000 goals happens for Buddy, the better it will be for the Swans. If it happens in Week 1, Buddy’s bag will go a long way to winning the game for Sydney against GWS. We are more likely to have to wait until Week 2 or maybe even Week 3 for the ‘event.’ Sydney players just don’t need to be distracted from the task at hand, which is winning each game no matter how many Buddy kicks, by trying to force the 1,000th Buddy goal to come faster than it can. It’s a tough ask for Buddy, despite being well within his capabilities, when he is playing against two top 8 sides in the first two rounds of the season.

buddy beautiful... if I was there I would be running onto the pitch... it is unlikely we will ever see the 1000 again.. still think round 2 or 3.

Hopefully the community does the right thing and crowd funds any fine that the unlucky 1-2 people will get singled out for. Would be even better if the Swans just picked up the tab for any fines incurred by the patrons. This will be the last pitch invasion we're gonna see. The AFL should be celebrating it, not acting like a party pooper. All pitch invasions in AFL have been peaceful. The fans just want to run out, take some selfies, pluck a blade of grass and be done with it.
