Former Fremantle and GWS forward Cam McCarthy has passed away, aged 29.

According to a report by The West Australian, he was found unresponsive at Lake Coogee in Perth’s south on Thursday evening.

His death is not being treated as suspicious.

McCarthy kicked 99 goals in 70 games with first the Giants and then the Dockers between 2014 and 2020, including leading the latter’s club goalkicking in 2017.

After a breakout 2015 with the Giants as a 20-year old, McCarthy requested a trade back to his native Western Australia, citing homesickness; when a deal couldn’t be struck in that year’s trade period, he chose to return home anyway despite still being under contract with the Giants, sitting out the entire 2016 season.

He played 49 matches for the Dockers between 2017 and 2020, before parting ways with the club mid-season after being informed he wouldn’t be offered a new contract for 2021.

The Dockers are planning to wear black armbands in tribute to McCarthy for their match against Sydney on Friday night.

McCarthy’s is the latest tragic death to rock the club in the last decade, along with former players Shane Yarran (2018), Colin Sylvia (2018) and Harley Balic (2022).

“On behalf of everyone at the Fremantle Football Club, we extend our deepest sympathies to Cam’s family at this unimaginably difficult time,” Dockers CEO Simon Garlick said in a statement.

“Cam came to the Club from Greater Western Sydney in 2016 and played 49 games for Fremantle after initially being drafted from South Fremantle.

“His death is tragic, and to all of his family, friends and teammates, we extend our deepest condolences.

“Cam was a kind and easy-going person at the Club, and he was someone who had a habit of making people smile and laugh. His talent was undeniable and he loved his footy.

“Our thoughts are with Cam’s family and his loved ones during this time.”
