'Some big positives to take from that': Glory rebuild starts with shock City win

By News / Wire

Perth Glory interim coach Ruben Zadkovich hopes the wooden spooners’ shock home win over Melbourne City can prove a step towards turning things around next A-League Men season, when he could well be at the helm full-time.

The Glory snapped a 16-game winless run in style on Wednesday and finished a tough season on a high note by stunning City, who were looking to seal the premiership, with a 2-0 victory at HBF Park.

“I’ve been saying even through some of the losses that there have been some big positives to take from that. Tonight is another massive positive,” Zadkovich said.

“A win like that will be another part of the foundations of our successes next year and moving forward.

“My belief doesn’t waver through tough times.

“I’ve been trying to impart to the boys that the hardships are actually the best times where you learn the most about yourself and about other people around you and which ones are willing to come with you and work hard and which ones aren’t.

“Tonight we had a whole group of people that represented themselves and the team in the club really well, and it’ll be a huge bit of belief that the boys need.”

Zadkovich has been linked to landing the Glory coaching role on a full-time basis after 10 games in the interim role, which have delivered one win, two draws and seven losses.

“Of course (I want the job), but my ambitions, even with the final game done and dusted, are parked at the moment,” he said.

“Because my job is to look after the club, the football club and to rebuild this team and that process is well and truly underway and there’s a lot of hard work to be done.

“It’s a proud club, and we need to get it off the bottom of the ladder and start climbing.”

Perth can’t pack up the tools just yet as they’ll have to prepare for their away Australia Cup (formerly FFA Cup) play-off match in mid-May.

“A few guys in there were, staff and players, joking about having a day off but those that know me well know that I’m not interested in days off, I’m interested in hard work,” Zadkovich said.

“We’ve certainly got a lot of improvement needed in a lot of areas at this club and tomorrow will be another day to get back on the grass and improve.”

Meanwhile young gun Joshua Rawlins has signed with FC Utrecht until 2026.

Well yeah those Saturday clash games are questionable, especially this round where plenty of people would probably want to catch the F3 derby.

I think it'll go down to City needing a win to wrap up the Premiers Plate on Monday against Wellington. - Victory should quite easily knock off Sydney. - The WU will only draw against Adelaide. - Leaving City 2 points behind Victory and needing a win. What a proposition!

That'd be nice, like your own personal sportsbar. More realistic would be me showing 1 game on the TV, 1 on my laptop, and the last on my ipad.

I've been wanting Glover to be benched for some weeks now which would have given him a chance to regroup and get his head straight. I think PK has coached poorly this season and our result reflect that. A significant factor is also the number of ACL games we've played. We had possession last night but we had a lack of sharpness. Weary minds weary bodies.

First match, Sydney FC vs Melbourne, Melbourne wins. But that would be on tremendous effort. Sydney FC has to win or just lie down for preparation of the next season. Should Sydney FC attack, it opens up spaces for MV. Sydney FC is not a attacking team and will lose. That leaves the 3 horse chariots with 2. The above script is not in favour of the spectators and WU. So, the re-written one is MV and SF have a draw to make a big excitement in the match AU vs WU on Sunday. Same scenario of Syd FC vs MV above. How can the defending team, WU, win away at AU's stadium. Therefore, the dream theme is WU wins AU to make the last match, MC vs WP, very spectacular. These are better than having 3 TVs to watch at the same time.

So, we need to buy 2 more TVs.

The only positive I took from that is that we now have a Premiership that can be won by the 3 Melbourne teams. Oh how I wish a late tweak to the schedule could put these 3 games on at the same time.

Rawlins off to Europe and how much are Perth Glory receiving - $0. I can't believe we are so poor at getting transfer fees. Why aren't our talented youth on longer contracts?

Statistically, chance of winning a match is around 37.32% regardless of home or away, https://www.bettingoffers.org.uk/how-big-is-home-advantage-in-football/ For now, WU has to have at least a win in the final match to win the premiership. As the difference of GD (goal difference) between MC and WU is 7. The possibility of WU winning the premiership with a draw and a big advantage on GD is low (assuming MV’s last match result is in favour of WU too). WU chance of wining last match is statistically 0.37. Even WU wins the last match, its premiership depends on MC not winning (draw or loss) and MV not winning (ignor the difference in GD between MV and WU now). The chance of not winning is 1 minus 0.37 = 1 – 0.37 = 0.63) Thus the chance of WU to take the premiership in the final round of matches is = 0.37 x 0.63 x 0.67 = 0.166. or roughly 1/6. 1/6 is not impossible. Why I care? It is because that I tipped WU not winning the premiership 2 rounds ago. However, the waterloo result of MC last night has changed the landscape.

For me the top 3 clubs have the most unreliable keepers in the competition. Glover, Young, Kelava are all prone to howlers. I'm not sure if, in a salary capped league, that the view from coaches is to focus on the 10 in front but it is an interesting co-incidence.

the preivous GK coach at city left and he was very close to sutton, a change in coach can be catastrophic to a young goalkeeper - having to learn different training methods etc sutton and glover have a weird relationship, because sutton was trying to date glovers sister (or that might've been the other way around?) regardless, thats kind of an awkward dynamic lol scarily enough glover is better with his feet than sutton, sutton is more of a 'shot stopper' eg. david de gea, while glover is a 'goalkeeper' eg. alisson 'goalkeepers' are more favoured over 'shot stoppers' in todays game and this is the only reason i can see for sutton not starting. its got nothing to do with suttons training, he's an excellent trainer by all reports as for ahmed, he was a player that i had several reports on - i still think hes incredibly 'green' as a keeper, struggles with distribution and doesnt command his box enough young goalkeepers are very difficult to grade though, for what its worth though - i dont think taleb is a league level niuwenheizen is a few years younger and shows more promise at city

the scary thing is city arent looking at options at goalkeeper, kisnorbo has 100% faith in glover. even for spurs youth, glover wasnt that highly rated (but niether was harry kane, who regularily took shot at him after practice when working with the youth keepers) spurs didnt put up any fight in keeping him, glovers really been found out this season. i'd be willing to bet he plays his part in a silly goal during the finals series

You can see why City would want him - English citizen - Youth teams with Spurs - Australian underage international That is highly saleable to CFG. However, if he is not performing there are so many good young keepers in AU they may need to assess their options.

Notice 2 subs only by PK, again not using his full bench and not the VISA in Endoh. Probably too stubborn to replace Glover next game. Is Sutton that bad as a back up? If so then why not try Tahled Ahmed the youth keeper. TSS might want to give us an insight onto both these back-ups because frankly I do not understand his persistence with Glover.

Perth have got a lot of good young players there issue is a lack of fitness not a lack of ability and technique. Even in this match where Perth players put in a much bigger effort maybe thanks to the 13 degree temperature, City were the fitter team even with the 6 extra matches in the last 2 weeks. Plus they used their bigger size to take the ball off Perth Glory, I was suprised how well Glory played out from the back they were under pressure but kept playing it out, and only made one big mistake where McLaren hit the post. Perth created one big opening which Gilroy hit straight at the keeper. The two goals Timmins scored the first goal was a perfect strike from outside the area under pressure, the second effort from long range that would have had no chance against a normal goal keeper. Glover he went to ground way too early and then was stuck with his body on the ground, and even then he should have saved it. Glover has already cost them the ACL round of 16, even though this didnt cost them points Glover has cost them in the past in the A-league as well. City apart from the strike on the post McLaren must have had close to 10 attempts at goal and that was his only convincing effort. McLaren should have had more movement when City made it to the byline and some occasions he was on the far post. Metcalfe was also missing in action , City lacked an extra body in the area. We have seen a lot of players go to Europe but very few have actually benefited from it. Its not like in the days of the NSL where players would go to Europe and with full time training there as opposed to part time, they became much better players after a single season. Even worse you have players like Balbaj going to Europe ruined his whole career, players who have gone over there and are technically worse than when they were left like Borello. Rawlins going to Europe is a big risk for his career. Western United I was perplexed how happy Aloisi was at the end of the game. Also his use of subs , while Western United did put in a much bigger effort in this game, they have been very meek in chasing the title in the previous months , they were tired in the second half and one late sub who later got subbed off so that was one fresh player on the field that doesn't cut it. Silvera had a big game, the one thing Diamanti has tried about fifty times chip the keeper , Silvera pulled it off at his first attempt from over half way, only to see Jamie Young palm it onto the post. The corner he hit for the Newcastle goal had enormous pace on it which is exactly what you need if you want to score from corners.
