Daniel Penha is Sydney FC’s statement signing in waiting

By TheSecretScout / Roar Guru

While fans of rival A-League Men clubs have been raising glasses of champagne and toasting to the demise of the immensely successful Sydney FC side of the ’00s.

The Moet might need to go back into the chiller, as Sydney look set to bounce back quickly, beating Melbourne Victory to the soon-to-be-confirmed marquee signing of Newcastle Jets star Daniel Penha.

One of the biggest fears of the smaller A-League Men sides is signing a foreign player from obscurity and then becoming a star of the league, only to then watch helplessly as the player signs for one of the bigger sides in the competition the following season.

Losing Penha is an absolutely hammer blow for the struggling Jets, who were starting to look like a side capable of beating any team on their day and getting back to regularly playing in the finals.

Jets fans will have been aware of this rumour of Penha not returning for the past few months, but losing him to Sydney will only add to the hurt.

As for Sydney fans, they will be absolutely delighted with the pending capture of the competition’s best player.

If not for suspension, Daniel Penha would’ve more than likely collected the Johnny Warren Medal, awarded to the season’s best player.

He has been outstanding in a Jets side that blows hot and cold, but the team take a lot of solace in the way they play. The Jets have been one of the best sides to watch this campaign.

Prior to this season commencing, a lot of people were scratching their heads at the signing of a relatively unknown 22-year-old Brazilian.

Brazilian players have had a very hit-and-miss relationship with the A-League Men, with a lot more failures than success stories.

Jets coach Arthur Papas deserves all the credit for his role in recruiting a player that has spent the last several years on loan in Brazil’s Serie A and B from his parent club Atletico Miniero.

Penha is well known for his dead-ball skills and ability to split defences open with his precise passing.

His overall attacking play is excellent and he has the flair and creativity to bamboozle opponents. He’s also not afraid to mix it up with the physical side of football and energetically presses well from the front.

Penha leads the league for assists with 15 and has also contributed four goals.

One of his best attributes is that he is always looking to push the team forward. Of the 1000+ passes he’s completed, just under 18 per cent have been going backwards.

As I mentioned earlier, he is not afraid to get physical, averaging just under 60 per cent combined for winning tackles, duels and aerial duels. Due to his ferocity he is a regular in the referee’s notebook, with six yellow and two red cards.

He will follow a long line of amazing attacking players who have called the harbour city home, including names like Milos Ninkovic, Adrien Mierzejewski and Siem De Jong.

Penha’s impending signing will help soften the blow of the current Sydney side that has close to 20 players off contract, with many already commencing negotiations with other A-League Men clubs.

Legends of the league Alex Wilkinson, Milos Ninkovic and Bobo are heading towards retirement and the future of under-siege coach Steve Corica is up in the air.

Sydney fans will have every reason to be optimistic heading into next season with the new stadium and Penha’s arrival. However, they will need to proceed with caution and temper expectations while undertaking a costly rebuild.

Playing for Sydney – where success is expected – is by no means an easy task. Many players have wilted under the weight of the famous sky-blue jersey.

Then there is the question mark that remains about how they integrate talented youth into the line-up, which Sydney have not done well since the league’s inception.

Fans of rival sides need to enjoy Sydney FC’s struggles while they can, because Daniel Penha is a statement signing, which should ensure Sydney FC’s demise won’t last long.

Sydney pass it sideways were intent on assembling a quality Over 35's squad. The A League premiership seemed a distraction.

Me too, I think I'll be supporting Mariners and Nix throughout the finals, but should Adelaide beat the Mariners then I'll obviously support them over the Melbourne teams. It's a jam packed finals series with plenty of games in the first two weeks, will be great!

Will watch Sydney play Brisbane on Paramount on Tuesday then I'll cheer on CCM during the finals. Hoping Sydney can produce some great signings for next season and mix them with some of their talented youngsters to produce a more exciting team. They have been hard to watch at times this year. You can't argue with Corica's statistics over 4 years, but I am hoping they have someone more adventurous for next season.

Crowd 11,404..was there also. First 10mins Victory on top then Sydney scored and it looked more even. The free kick seemed innocuous but at 2 -1 Victory took control and I think they basically put cue in rack after the 3rd. Both sides defences exposed with breakways but Victory always looked more likely to score . 2nd half Sydney had more of the control but failed to create many chances, the two parts of Sydneys form…seem easy to score against when sides want to & the last pass near the box almost always goes astray.

I was at the Sydney v Victory game last night and we certainly need him and more. We scored one very good goal, but apart from that we never looked like scoring. Victory looked good and were by far the better team. It was a reasonable crowd last night, so it was a disappointing end for Sydney's season and the departure of Bobo and I assume Ninko and Wilkinson.

but Sydney is flooded with football teams of all codes so a divided market. AU is actually an A League heavy weight.

Yeh, I do get it....I think the SA economy is about 1/6 the size of NSW so there is always going to be a scaling of $ and opportunities available. What's the latest timetable on the new roof....the images available online look great.

win now? you answered your own question, its about being competitive adelaide as a city has never been known as a ‘win now’ club, if im being brutally honest, its not expected to win anything – i’m not talking purely football, im talking all sporting teams in adelaide straight away they’re at a disadvantage because they can’t afford to pay the wages and large contracts to players in comparison to the eastern states. As long as the sporting sides are competitive (which most generally are) and play locals (which most generally do), you’ll be hard pressed to find anyone that is disappointed with not winning trophies in adelaide if we’re talking purely united, it doesn’t have the finances or resources (which was yet again mentioned by the former director of football, during the national coverage of the last match – i didnt hear the exact quote, but it was of that ilk) to even be in the “win now” bracket like your victory/sydney/wanderers/city – i would even put macarthur in that category, they are heavily bankrolled i know that’s hard for people in NSW to believe, but its factual. The club regularly misses out on targets because it can’t pay enough or offer players things that constitute salary cap breaches like cars, accommodation and jobs to parents/family members like a lot of the big a league clubs do The best example i can give of financials was with fornaroli and how close he was to joining adelaide from city. he had a contract offer that would’ve made him the best paid player in the clubs history, only to see perth up there offer by $300K and win that signature its always been the same mantra for adelaide – bring through home grown players, give second chances to 1 or 2 interstate players and look for cheap imports that doesnt change with pelligra group taking over and the 50 million stadium upgrade all pre requisites for this season have been met with the exception of the amount of home games they wanted to win and also what position in the top 4 they internally felt this squad was capable of finishing (granted that was before o’halloran, mauk were sold and they were scrambling to get loan signings in)

Win Now?.....isn't that precisely the point of competitive sport. Out of interest Andy...how is Adelaide's Win-Later strategy working out?

Scout, mate how is this league supposed to grow when only a few clubs prosper and the rest just have to put up with it. I am sure you agree that there are some pretty obvious reasons why e.g. Victory and Sydney are as popular as the proverbial in an elevator. The same situation has been inflicted on Adelaide if I am not wrong. The Jets apparently have McGarry and Sotirio in their sights, and that's the way football works I guess. Man, it would be so nice for the Jets to just get one lucky break, but we'll push on and we'll be a thorn in the side of a lot of teams.

plot thickens for piscopo potentially, such is the constant update with potential movement his management team FHP (who manage several a league players) are negotiating a contract for one of there clients, with the victory i am assuming its piscopo - hes off contract and has a league interest. victory were in for penha but have lost out to sydney -they are actively looking for new options in the front line piscopo generally will play as a winger, but he can also play as an attacking mid - hes also from melbourne and wouldnt cost much - very attractive option for any side struggling to remain under the cap for next season he could well be the player in question

Has had a fantastic season. With the Jets currently owned by 3 or 4 A-League clubs, it's unsurprising that they would try and pick the eyes out of the club they actually own.

If you look at the stats for Adelaide the ones who get the game time over the season are Lopez, Isaias, Juande, Goodwin, Kitto players who got the game time when they were available. Jakobsen , Mauk, Halloran, Ibusuki its all old players. young players are just filling in between transfers, injuries etc. Sydney on the other hand Joel King got 2 and half seasons of full gametime . Talbot now has been full time since King was transferred. Yazbek is now first choice when fit.
