'Special goal': Brimmer scores semi-final stunner to hand Victory edge over United

By News / Wire

A moment of magic from Jake Brimmer has handed Melbourne Victory a 1-0 win over Western United and the ascendancy in their two-legged A-League Men semi-final.

Brimmer’s marvellous, dipping half-volley from outside the box, after Jamie Young had punched a corner clear, in the 74th minute at AAMI Park proved the difference in a clash that had plenty of aggression but few quality chances.

Crucially, it hands Tony Popovic’s Victory a one-goal advantage ahead of Saturday’s reverse fixture at the same venue, as they eye their first grand-final appearance in four years.

“It was a tough semi-final. It’s what you expect, it was a real battle,” Popovic said.

“We had to be patient and it took a fantastic goal to do it but at half-time in a two-leg match, we’ve got the slight advantage.”

Popovic hailed breakout star Brimmer for again stepping up in a big moment.

The 24-year-old previously claimed the Mark Viduka Medal as man of the match in Victory’s FFA Cup final win and has four goals in his past five games.

“Jakey is doing something now that probably he needed in his game,” Popovic said.

“He’s always assisted goals but now he’s scoring and he’s scoring in big games.

“We’re very happy with how he’s playing and hopefully he can produce another special moment on Saturday.

“He’s always had the talent and now he’s a lot more consistent in his play.

“He’s one of the players in our squad that didn’t miss (pre-season) training. He wanted to be the best every day.

“When you work that way and you have the talent Jakey has, the rewards can follow.”

There was controversy with United arguably unlucky not to receive a penalty in the fifth minute when Jason Davidson went into Lachie Wales’ back.

“We all saw it. The referee obviously didn’t see it. The assistant referee didn’t see it, I don’t know how. But the VAR missing it has happened to us all season so I expected the VAR to miss it,” United coach John Aloisi said.

“… Anyone that understands the game will know that’s a clear penalty.

“There’s no intent to play the ball. He’s pushed him from behind.

“That’s disappointing because when it’s so clear, you expect if the referee doesn’t see it … then help him.”

On the whole, the United boss was pleased, especially given they were coming off a three-day turnaround compared to Victory’s nine days between games.

United dominated early in the first half and in the eighth minute Victory goalkeeper Ivan Kelava did brilliantly to bat away Aleksandar Prijovic’s near-post header.

Aloisi’s side had several half-chances to equalise after Brimmer’s goal.

“We limited them to a few chances, if any, and they had to score a special goal to win the game,” Aloisi said.

“To be honest, we’re well and truly in this tie. This is the first half, we’re 1-0 down.”

Best part was how totally unconcerned the other kids were. Their mate was laid out, but a worldie was scored and they were pumped and celebrating. They were oblivious to the right back crawling out from under a giant Prime Minister.

A lot of Victory fans are on the cheap side their semi finals attendances in the past have been lower than the regular season. Are the APL bonkers though if they thought they could make more money out having a 2 legged final with a mid week match sandwiched in there. In the case of Adelaide City because the matches are in different cities .

Further to the TSS' response, really, Piscopo is light years away from being able to play the Metcalfe role, in fact, I don't think he is even capable of playing Bereguer's role either. He is out an out an attacking player, more often than not, playing wide. If someone is chasing a marauding attacking wing back, chances are high it won't be Piscopo. Yes, a bit more like Tilio, except Tilio has a much higher hit rate, and is equally adept cutting in from either wing. And I'd say his work ethic is pretty good for a creative player. Piscopo looks ok at times, but not sure he got the runs on the board this season (so to speak).

Picopo is normally a left winger, he can pinch hit at attacking mid as well– definitely not the sort of player you would want, to replace Metcalfe. Its one thing having a work rate when you operate in the front third of the pitch, but he hasn’t got the up/down engine to replace Metcalfe in the middle have not heard anything about central midfield replacements at all for city, but i will make the same suggestion i said the other day, that would give a different dynamic to that engine room. - josh cavallo from adelaide. hes an ex city youth team player and he could bring alot of energy/stamina/endurance to that city midfield - his 'business' could actually create more time on the ball for the attacking players its not city, that have signed parsons :) on the topic of city i dont think they need to strengthen too much. - theyve got the core group locked in, just need to supplement them with 2-3 more players (2 really high quality visa players, would complete that team) losing cola hurts, purely due to the fact hes a legitimate city youngster through and through. But lopane from wanderers coming in as a replacement, has a lot more upside - in terms of the player he 'could' become, but the issue is hes not going to get the required game time. talbot from sydney is in negotiations as well.

So where were all the Victory fans? I was appalled by the lack of support for a semi final, even if it was the first leg. Shouldn't the fans of what is largely accepted as the best supported club in a city of 5 million population be out in force for a match like this? Not sure what the official attendance was but it looked like about 7k to me. I know Western Utd have very few supporters anyway but still very poor.

CCM need a runner and worker up front , so Ruhs will be a good fit. Alex Parsons I am suprised another team has come for him, he does have potential as a striker, he has been played on the wing by Roar which is not his position. Piscopo while he could be a good striker, his hold up play and ability to work a shot is great , Victory have already got 5 good wingers so why would they want him . Popovic is big on pressing , Piscopo workrate is his weakness, we saw Popovic slave drive Bridge into working hard and pressing maybe he thinks he can do the same with Piscopo.

Interesting about Parsons, when you say another a league club on a much high wage I automatically think City. Piscopo was bought up in our City Forum chat as a replacement for Metcalfe going to St Pauli since it's well known he wants to come back to Melbourne. It was thought he's not sufficiently defensive minded for City's structure, too similar to Berenguer and Tilio. Thoughts?

brims will go close to winning the johnny warren medal, hes been victorys best player this season by a long way a few interesting bits of transfers news. *michael ruhs (who i've spoken about on here a lot and rate highly) has left macathur, move to the mariners is imminent - hes mates with several of the mariners boys and recently watched there last home game in gosford. great pick up if they can complete it, as the mariners "friends" down the F3 are trying to hijack the deal *alex parsons was wanted by brisbane, the club did not think he was worth as much as he thought $$$$ wise and let him go - hes already been signed by another a league club on a much larger wage. *Victory have slightly cooled interest on rene piscopo to concentrate on a big 'marquee' signing. piscopo is a melbourne boy, his family are season ticket holders at victory and hes made it known behind the scenes he wants to come back home.

Must have been a tough away trip though. MV will surely be much happier when they get back to the safe confines of AAMI Park home dressing room for the second leg!

Western United did more pressing with intensity than the rest of the season combined and spent the last bit of the game against Victorys parked bus. Victory chances on the night were one the lowest they have had all season, and Western United while they didnt have any good chances that ball that flashed across the goal late could have been an easy tap in. Victory how much of the game they didnt get a shot on target ball on target their only other good chance Dagastino miss hit volley off a cross , too much of a technical finsih for a player of his type though. Then the player with worst finishing in the A-league this season Brimmer 1 goal from open play from over 40 attempts previously then scores a great goal which is out of Jamie Youngs reach. I didnt think Jamie Young made a save otherwise. You could not have anticipated any of that. The big question that has to be asked of Aloisi is why didnt he go for the low hanging fruit and take the premieship from such a good position. Western United were pathetic and lacking any intensity in the last portion of the season. Even against the Phoenix they were so and so in the first semi final and it was Jamie Young who saved them. This other team that came out hammer and tong against Victory matched their intensity, dominated them and beat them was the Wanderers . In fact in Wanderers had played like they did against MV that night and in the matches against Sydney FC in all their matches they would have been a contender for this season. Wenzel Halls was the leader of the pack in the pressing, Prijovic was found wanting in that department, what would have happened if he put in that effort against one of the weaker teams instead of the best defensive team. The question about Wenzel Halls comes around again, he had 5 goals in the first 7 games last season for Roar, he could have been a contender. Instead he got slacker and slacker.

He had a strike in the first half that had Jamie Young impersonating a fish on a jetty. The guy is a quality player, at least championship level if not EPL. If Victory have to sell it should be multiple millions.
