Kyrgios melts down with epic racquet-smashing tantrum after US Open loss

By News / Wire

Nick Kyrgios has had a major temper tantrum following his loss in the quarter-finals of the US Open.

The Australian’s campaign is over following a disappointing five-set quarter-final loss to Karen Khachanov. After shaking his opponent’s hand, Kyrgios proceeded to smash his racquet on the ground in frustration, and then throw it away in disgust.

Unable to back up his rousing fourth-round win over world No.1 Daniil Medvedev, Kyrgios crashed to a 7-5 4-6 7-5 6-7 (3-7) 6-4 defeat to the Russian 27th seed, ending Australia’s singles hopes for another year.

“I’m obviously devastated,” Kyrgios said.

“But all credit to Karen. He’s a fighter. He’s a warrior. I thought he served really good today. Honestly probably the best server I played this tournament, to be honest, the way he was hitting his spots under pressure.

“He just played the big points well. Really wasn’t anything in it. I’m just devastated obviously. Just feel like it was either winning it all or nothing at all, to be honest.

“I feel like I’ve just failed at this event right now. That’s what it feels like.”

The in-form Wimbledon finalist looked subdued from the outset, possibly the hangover effect from his electrifying victory over Medvedev two nights earlier.

Possibly because he was carrying a niggling injury. Or maybe he was fatigued from a grueling and successful American hard-court swing.

Whatever the reason, Kyrgios lacked his usual energy and paid the price for a slow start, playing catch-up for most of the night.

The excitement machine appeared to be going through the motions throughout the first set as the two power servers seemed headed towards an inevitable tiebreaker.

Kyrgios, though, dropped serve at 5-6 with a double-fault then a nonchalant volley that enabled Khachanov to play a routine lob to take the set.

Kyrgios immediately took a medical time-out, telling the trainer he felt a sharp pain in his left upper calf muscle.

He resumed playing but seemed to be losing his stomach for a fight, complaining to his box: “I don’t want to play through this shit. I really don’t want to f…ing do it.”

But out of nowhere he broke Khachanov in the third game of the second set to revive his challenge.

While barely shifting out of second gear, Kyrgios did enough to continue holding his serve to nab the second set and square the match up.

Showing increasing signs of life, the Wimbledon runner-up finally fist-pumped to his box after he levelled the pivotal third set at 4-4 with a pair of big aces.

He looked on top, dominating Khachanov from the baseline and urging the crowd to will him to a decisive break.

He had two chances the next game but failed to convert either – and promptly erupted, receiving a code violation for breaking a racquet in disgust.

Opportunity lost, the hot-head hit the self-destruct button and found himself down double set point at 15-40 the very next game.

Kyrgios looked almost resigned to handing over the set, only for Khachanov to frame a sitter at the next on the first set point before the Australian fired down three unreturnable serves to momentarily escape peril.

He couldn’t hold from 15-40 down a second time, though, as Kyrgios fumed at his box – yet again – for not offering enough vocal support.

“You don’t even know what a breakpoint is. An embarrassment,” Kyrgios screamed over and over to his entourage, before receiving another warning, this time for unsportsmanlike conduct after pelting a water bottle into the court.

After settling down, Kyrgios raised hopes of a fightback when he snatched the fourth set in a tiebreaker.

But despite carrying an impressive 11-3 career record in matches that have gone the distance, Kyrgios dropped serve in the first game of the deciding set and never recovered, eventually bowing out after three hours and 39 minutes.

There was quite a hairy situation off the court while Nick Kyrgios battled on court at the US Open.
Two men’s stay in the Arthur Ashe Stadium seats was cut short after one buzzed the other’s head right there in the stands while Kyrgios and Karen Khachanov played their quarter-final on Tuesday night.

They had clippers and the sort of cape a barber usually uses to keep a customer clean.
Soon enough, social media users were all excited about how a YouTuber known for his pranks had pulled this one off.
Tournament security removed the two from the match.

“When someone saw it, security went to the two individuals. They were escorted out of their seats and then off the grounds for disruption of play,” US Tennis Association Brendan McIntyre said, adding: “There’s a first time for anything.”

I cannot stomach the speed with which fans about face when nothing has changed. On these very pages a year or two back he was slated by everyone for his appalling behaviour. But all's forgiven now he can channel his pathetic antics to better his game. "But mum and dad, why can't I scream swear words and smash my racquets, Nick Kryrios does it? "

I find him hard to watch. Especially when he blames his team/box. I love watching Aussies but I’m conflicted watching this one!

For mine, I found myself a bit disappointed for Khachanov when he started to acknowledge the crowd and enjoy his victory, but has to wait for Kyrgios who makes it about himself by smashing his racquets in a massive fit. I get it that you are unhappy with the loss, but geez try showing some class and grace in defeat. Watching Kyrgios rearranging the molecular configuration of his $400 racquets got old about 10 years ago.

It's a good tournament for Kyrgios. His behavior has improved marginally and he's playing better tennis. Winning a Grand Slam takes two weeks and it's hard to see him lasting two weeks ever but as he gets older he may decide he needs to win a Grand Slam. He has the tennis ability but not the mental ability, currently. He would know this. There's always a trade-off when all is on the line.

That’s pretty funny. In a weird sorta way. A bit violent, but it seems to be an effective outlet for his feelings.

He's passionate, hasn't hurt anyone with his antics at the end of the match. He would know he missed a huge opportunity to win an Open. It's great to see him finally startingvto deliver on his undoubted potential.

Agree. I not only enjoy seeing him lose but his “throwing the toys out of the cot tantrums” are a joy to behold. We used to enjoy & respect Laver, Rosewall, Hoad, Roche, Newcombe, Rafter etc now we have this buffoon. Natural talent is wasted on the clown. Hopefully he will never win a major as it would be a poor advertisement for the game.

Marat Safin broke 4 racquets in a Grand Slam match. That was after the first set! Nick, you can do better.

In Kyrgios’ defence, most of his expressive tendencies are directed solely at himself. His language is no worse than other sporting codes. The media takes great pleasure in relying his spoken transcripts. Please do the same with Rugby League, as these players are not angles either. Yet, I don’t fault them. A human’s bold reaction is the result of the harsh environment they are in. This is elite sport. Let them live. These are tough conditions. A man breaks down & we criticise him? We should actually be asking if he is ok.

Yep, typical Kyrgios. Laughing & joking & everyone’s mate when he’s winning. Petulant, arrogant, rude & disgraceful when he loses. The guy is a first-class jerk, & sooner everyone realises that & moves on, the better.

Maybe if he didn't waste all that energy carrying on like a year year old he'd have enough energy to win more games?

I’d be pooped too, having played all those sets. We’re talking hours & hours on the court. Far more draining than the women’s competition. Yet, Nick’s heart-on-his-sleeve gets shamed.

I think that it was just the realisation of the massive opportunity that he’d let go, once he’d beaten Medvedev I thought the title was his to lose.
