Oliver's off-season from hell continues as Dees star charged for driving with suspended licence

By News / Wire

Melbourne superstar Clayton Oliver will face court in January after he was charged with driving with a suspended licence.

Gun midfielder Oliver has been unable to drive on medical grounds since he was hospitalised following a seizure on October 12.

But he was pulled over on November 16 and subsequently charged.

“Police have charged a 26-year-old Camberwell man after police pulled his vehicle over on Moorhouse Street in Camberwell on 16 November,” Victoria Police said in a statement.

“He has been charged on summons with driving whilst suspended and will appear in Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on 9 January.”

Oliver, 26, was hospitalised last month after a seizure, which he partially attributed to side effects of his ADHD medication.

Melbourne confirmed his driving suspension was related to that seizure.

“Clayton advised the club immediately following an incident where Victoria Police stopped him for driving while his licence was suspended on medical grounds,” Melbourne said in a statement.

“This was in relation to the time he spent in the hospital following a seizure.

“As the matter is before the court, the club won’t be making any further comment at this stage.”

Oliver’s professionalism was repeatedly questioned this year amid doubts over his future at Melbourne, with trade rumours circulating, despite the midfielder being contracted until 2030.

He wanted to stay, and coach Simon Goodwin has said Melbourne didn’t consider trading him, but made it clear he needed to adhere to the Demons’ standards.

The four-time club champion and triple All-Australian was  restricted to 15 AFL games this season because of a hamstring injury.

Large doses of amphetamines can cause seizures but it is rare, he may have taken more than he was suposed to, some people have a lower threshold to seizure activity on certain medications as well

I mean there was a point at least in NSW where they were talking about removing anyone on strong pharmaceuticals from driving licenses, I know the federal guidelines recently moved ASD onto the list of conditions that require medical pre clearance for drivers licenses because of the way they process information

True but the meds they put us on are narcotics and incredibly strong particularly if you're neurotypical. As I told my boss stimulants will make anyone feel good but with neurodivergent individuals it feels like you can actually focus on junk without being distracted easily.

Yeah, they were hunting him. And so be it if so. Oliver is still supremely at fault.

He's not wrong, actually. A good mate of mine is a cop. Registration has never been linked to licence. I've never once filled out a car registration form that required me to put in my licence. It merely asks for proof of identity. The police do not build the system around licensing and registration. They technically aren't the ones issuing fines, suspensions and demerit points. That's all governed by VicRoads. Police merely enforce the system. The number plate scanner solely checks the registration (and insurance) of a car. My mother has no licence, but I (for now) drive a car registered in her name. I've driven past hundreds of police. Never been pulled up because they think it's my mum driving without a licence. You can drive past a police car with an invalid licence without any fear (although it's still decidedly illegal) if you aren't breaking any other traffic law at the time. Speed past a cop car...a different story. Sadly, as we know from when there are accidents etc, there are hundreds, thousands of unlicenced drivers roaming the streets every day. Do you honestly believe NONE of them would ever drive past a police car? Oliver was doing something that caught the attention of the police, or the cop was able to identify Oliver and knew from the press his licence was likely to be invalid.

That's technically true - in a way. If a camera detects a speeding vehicle, the system sends the owner the fine, as everyone assumes the owner is driving. Just as the police recognition system brings up the owner, and the police make an educated guess that the owner is the driver, based on millions of samples.

Nowra Bridge accident 2010 was caused by an epileptic seizure https://www.smh.com.au/national/nsw/hit-from-behind-and-then-plunged-into-terror-20100913-159d4.html I suppose it could be a one off seizure or it could be followed by another. I knew the guy who had the heart attack below, he had a chest pain the night before but refused to see a doctor because he hated modern medicine. https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2851290/amp/Father-dies-blacks-driving-car-hits-tree-despite-12-year-old-daughter-trying-wheel-stop-veering-oncoming-traffic.html
