How do A-League fans convince police that passion is not a crime?

By Mike Tuckerman / Expert

One of the biggest games on the Australian sporting calendar took place in front of a huge crowd on Saturday night – and it had nothing to do with a wagering-fuelled trip to Las Vegas.

Just under 28,000 fans turned out at a packed CommBank Stadium in Parramatta for the 37th instalment of the Sydney Derby on Saturday night.

Unfortunately for Wanderers fans, their team went missing when they were needed most.

Sydney FC’s 4-1 demolition of their crosstown rivals Western Sydney wasn’t just one of their most comprehensive wins of the season.

It was also the sixth Sydney derby win in a row for the away team in a run that stretches back to the opening of the new Allianz Stadium in November 2022.

The Wanderers were never at the races after going two goals down inside the opening seven minutes, and if the penalty conceded by Lachlan Brook for handball was a bit harsh, it was the home team’s diabolical second-half defending that put the game to bed.

How badly do the Wanderers need injured goalkeeper Lawrence Thomas back?

The sidelined Socceroos shot-stopper could only watch on forlornly from the stands as first Robbie Mak, then Fabio Gomes punished individual errors to put the Sky Blues four goals to the good.

Not even Zac Sapsford’s late consolation could lift the home fans’ spirits, with Sydney FC’s high press suffocating the hosts on the night.

It could be a costly defeat for Marko Rudan’s side – not least because they’ve now got Brisbane Roar snapping at their heels following their 3-2 win over Melbourne Victory.

There were far fewer fans at Suncorp Stadium on Sunday afternoon, but those in attendance created a raucous atmosphere that was a reminder of days gone by.

The home fans had plenty to cheer about, too, as recent Roar signing Marco Rojas headed the hosts into the lead against the team he played more than 100 games for.

And if it was unusual to see one of the smallest players in the competition open the scoring with his head, Rojas proved it was no fluke when he stooped low at the far post to convert a Keegan Jelacic cross in the second half.

That came after the influential Zinedine Machach fired home a rasping low drive to level the scores at 1-1 in what was an entertaining encounter despite Brisbane’s oppressive humidity.

The hosts took a deserved 3-1 lead when Paul Izzo could only palm Jelacic’s shot straight into the path of teenage striker Tom Waddingham, and the Roar ended up needing that goal after new Victory signing Roly Bonevacia pulled one back late on.

It was another impressive performance from Ruben Zadkovich’s side and one that sets up an intriguing clash with Ufuk Talay’s in-form Sydney FC next weekend.

And the fans inside Suncorp Stadium – particularly those congregated behind the goal – produced an excellent atmosphere for the entire 95 minutes.

That’s despite the fact The Den walked out en masse in just the 25th minute of the game.

There is absolutely no doubt the A-League has a policing problem.

It’s been a problem for years now and as we saw with both the Red and Black Bloc and The Den walking out this weekend – not to mention the problems The Bullpen continue to have in Campbelltown – fans have simply had enough.

The over-policing of fans is one reason attendances have fallen off a cliff in recent seasons.

The problem seems to arise because some Australian police cannot seem to stomach the sight of a large, well-organised group of fans chanting in unison.

It’s in stark contrast to the NRL and AFL – where fans are much more passive consumers than active participants in the game.

And it’s lead to a form of hysterical, 1950s-style policing that sees some officers spend their entire shift antagonising supporters and believing they can act with impunity.

If A-League administrators actually understood their own fan base, they’d stand up for football fans.

Sports opinion delivered daily

But this is Australia, which means those who create the atmosphere are invariably the first ones punished for it.

I think this just proves my point. You get disappointed when the papers report on the mugs and thugs in soccer. Yet in no world does a country soccer team fight make the papers. You shouldn’t complain when the national comp makes news when other codes make news in a country pub.

My understanding of events that went down with the RBB last weekend, is that WSW have had systems, protocols, and marshaling in place for some time. Unfortunately based on what Daniel McBreen reported, when the stadium changed their security provider, communication broke down. At the weekend there was a lock out of the nominated and identifiable people marshaling the TIFO at the stadium, leading to escalation, police engagement and arrests. So it may not be foolproof, especially if stadium security and police continue to have an attitude problem. I applaud Kaz and Brisbane Roar for the rapid and sensible response, and hope that it will be successful. It is possibly not everything we were hoping for. Having seen the Brisbane footage, I have been shocked, and feel less safe knowing that there may be armed and aggressive police officers out there in the broader community free to behave as they please. And that is me speaking as a senior citizen. I hope that what has been announced is just the start of the relationship rebuilding. It cannot be the be all and end all, and must not be matter of set and forget. I would like to see a process to monitor progress. Ideally a formal complaints process where members and supporters can forward issues to the club. Meanwhile, it sounds like Brisbane Roar are stepping up to the plate. Hopefully Suncorp Security and QPS step up also.

Lionheart/Waz - this discussion you are having about the pros and cons as to how Roar are being run does have to go back into the localised history of our game for it is not the first time this club has faced the ups and downs of performance level. In 1957 a group of Dutch migrants out in the Western Suburbs decided to have their own football club which they named Hollandia. They worked extremely hard and inside a few years had not only purchased acreage at Richlands but had seen their team progress up through the local leagues to become a local first division team. Altogether what one would say a very successful decade. As is quite normal in our game jealousies began to surface between Hollandia and the also ran clubs who made up the competition, jealousies that reached their peak when the ASF announced there was going to be a national league and entries were to be forthcoming. Hollandia were the only Qld team with the means to enter but quickly ran into opposition from the top Qld body, the QSF. who DEMANDED that the NSL games would HAVE to be played at Perry Park for at least 3 seasons, this meaning Hollandia/Lions could not use their own developed ground at Progress Road. By now the Lions board was being run by a chairman with some 15 years experience in the job and he ,and his team, set about making the changes needed for the team to be a success in the national league. John Morcus opened the management committee to other nationalities mainly due to the fact that many of the original "starters " were now pensioners and more interested in watching "their" team winning, than toiling in back breaking work. Changes were made right down the line and each director was given a job and it was him who had to report to the committee as to his departmental performance. This began to have an effect and by 1980 the first team was sitting in a comfortable position in the league whilst winning the national trophy. Very quietly ,not publicised, was the fact that every time Lions took the field there were at least 3 locals in the run on squad and another 2 or 3 locals sitting on the bench However this was not to last and by now the previous jealousies that had existed between the QSF and some other clubs began to assail the boardroom at Lions. The men who had supervised the changes in management, Morcus and secretary Boegheim, left the club for various reasons and the coach was replaced in a hush hush manner by someone in the new committee, being brought from Holland, but unfortunately was another example of bad decision making . He lasted 2 seasons. Unfortunately a downward spiral now commenced aided and abetted by departure of players some experienced , some to better their chances. Jim Mclean, Alan Hunter, Danny Wright, Steven Jackson , John Stewart all moved south, while Jim Hermiston retired, Bobby Ferris returned to Scotland, Calvin Daunt went to Taringa, Billy Willianson left to go coaching, and Steven Hogg and Paul Ontong left to follow their job careers. It became obvious the new management were caught short and by 1986/7 the team was dropped from the NSL when they finished last in the comp. Brisbane City had already been "dropped" so Qld was left without a team in the national league. So in only 7 seasons disaster had been achieved ,while the habit of changing coaches as a be all end all cure commenced using 8 different coaches in 10 years.!!!!!! Come 2004 and it was announced there was going to be a fully professional competition. Lions had been enjoying a long spell winning the local competition albeit far short of the standard required but undeterred, the management ploughed ahead and problem followed problem as committees/owners changed, financial aims were proving difficult and as year passed year it became harder to work out how decisions were being made from boardroom down to the reserve team. Come 2009 a glimpse of hope. Another coach was employed, rumoured to be a "I'll make all the football decisions man" and for 2 glorious years Hollandis/Lions/Roar dominated the league. Unfortunately it was not to last and we appear to be back in the "dark days with Lionheart ever so hopeful and Waz apparently past that stage. jb.

Ballymore has proven a mess but get a grip, it’s been badly managed by the QRU who are way behind on any works and upgrades. The lack of a home in Brisbane is the real cause. You gloat, like you really do want them to fail. Give it and them a break Waz. Go find yourself a club to support, plenty of winning teams in three other codes locally.

Police can make security do stupid things. In the old days some idiot posted a fake CCM hools page saying they were going to fight Sydney FC so the riot squad came to the Gosford games. This weird security guy goes into the away bay and tries to take the only woman in the away bay off with him , upon which I assume it was the husband and his friends then start arguing and then he persist dragging her off so then they were beating him up. Then the riot squad came in with pepper spray but the pepper spray took the ire of someone in the next row who then came at the riot police fists flying and more pepper spray didnt stop him. They ended up dragging that guy off and leaving the original lot, I never saw that security guy again.

Well here’s another one that’s not historical: “ Due to unforeseen circumstances related to meeting league-wide lighting requirements, the kick-off time for the match has been pushed forwards to 3:00 PM Australian Eastern Standard Time (AEST).” Unforeseen circumstances - every football club knows to check the lighting preseason lol. It’s this simple - Kaz & Zac can’t avoid the history, all they can do is PROVE they are different in action not words. Getting games in to stadiums with the right lighting would be a good start.

lost another reply, my bad, but I’ll quickly reply. Can’t blame new management for injuries and resultant losses, both teams. The two are directly related. You know the why for coaches, unless you expect them to find/sign a Jurgen Klopp overnight, mid-season, what did you expect? The women’s coach decision was decisive and needed, turned the team around, also some excellent signings. Can’t blame new execs for grounds, inherited issue, give them time. Anton left or was sacked, it happens (lots). He brought some value but overrated, turning us into SA mk 2, closed Academy junior teams and overlooked locals like Waddingham, Brownlee, Blackledge, McNichol, etal. New execs have done what they said in building Roar’s Qld identity, bringing back former local players Brown, Acton, Nichols & others. Coming home is their theme and that’s what they’re doing (Suncorp is in Brisbane). Their signings, like Bereunger and Rojas are credit to them, both speak v highly about execs. Unlike previous years, we haven’t rushed into a dud signing of a striker/mf to sit on the bench. I see that as a positive, we need the right striker, not any striker. ‘A bit rich’ comment on the Roar email. Waz, as an adult who’s probably twice your age and has had a long career in senior management, I find your reaction and comment from that statement on, immature and emotive. I don’t know where AL Memes got their copy, mine was by email and on the BRFC website, but that aside, it’s who signs the letter and what it says that matters. Staff have been writing letters for execs for decades, welcome to the 21st century. Besides, as I said, they replied to my own email very promptly and told me the steps they had already taken regarding emergency meeting with stadium and police (ahead of normal post match meeting). This was way (24 hours) before any other club or APL had written to fans or issued a statement. What are you expecting? More emails and lots of Tweets? Ban police and security? and announce a move back to Redcliffe? before they even talk to anyone involved. Be reasonable.

Did you not get my point about stopping whingeing and just turning up for games? In your later message you talk about “poor crowds”. If football fans like you refuse to turn up, of course crowds will be poor. People go on about WU and Bulls poor crowds, well unfortunately Brisbane Roar getting a crowd of 5000 is worse when Brisbane and the whole of QLD only have one team.

Lionheart, I don’t refuse to accept efforts to turn the club around, I just refuse to accept words as evidence the club is being turned around. Until then the new management team get some breathing space to get things done but let’s look at where we are this season: - poor men’s team performance - poor women’s team performance - an injury crisis in the men’s squad - 4 coaches in 4 weeks for the men and. Change 2 rounds in for women - former employee taking the club to court for wrongful dismissal - poor crowds, men and women. - record defeats, men, women & youth - nomadic training grounds: at least 4 for the men - no permanent training ground for the men next season (the club are unsure of where they’ll train, maybe Meakin Park) And this comment: “I might add, as its topical, Roar CEO had a very reassuring email out to fans within 24 hours of Sunday’s game” That’s a bit rich after AL Memes posted it was written by AI …. But again, nice words - can we see some action! Now, I’m prepared to say some of the blame lies with prior management and that K&Z need time to fix things up … but it seems that whatever they are fixing up they can’t talk about. My response was to someone who said “fans just need to turn up” and the response is no, a strong no they don’t - the club need to work hard to get fans back and lose the entitlement thinking. And having 13 year olds man-handled by Police and middle aged men verbally abused by police should be their concern. And one email doesn’t even come close to the hundreds if not thousands of posts, likes, clicks, and shares this topic is doing. We are potentially days away from a national boycott by active support and I hope the club have done more than get Chat GBT to pen a heartfelt email.

I’ve since seen the Den statement, that’s what I mean. They could well have just walked away as you suggested but that’s not leadership. I see plenty of young people at Roar matches, seemingly more this season. The Den, which is always excellent, look a lot more youthful this season, even wearing Young Brisbane shirts. Youth are not tainted like oldies, full of hope not despair, but they always need wise heads to guide them. Stand up Waz, don’t sit.

I replied earlier but looks like it's gone astray. The issues you raise are almost entirely historical Waz. Get over it, life's moved on, Roar's moved on. The current execs are trying exceptionally hard to turn Brisbane Roar FC around. There will be no increase to investment in the club until it is run professionally. It will take time, after years of what you describe in your regular historical features. Out of interest, I emailed the club after Sunday's topical game, before I received the CEOs email which was excellent and timely. I received a reply to my email almost immediately (still waiting on Suncorps reply), and then to my follow-up query. They care and they are trying very hard. We can't ask for anything more than they give their best effort. We'll get there, hang in.

You refuse to acknowledge any efforts by the club to turn things around. The issues you raise are largely historical, under previous management. The signs are there if you care to look. Brisbane City NPL (your club) refused to honor their coach's contract during Covid but no one, including you, said a word about that while you still dribble on about Roar. 'Not exactly illegal but immoral', I hope you bannered that at Spencer Park. How many others did it? The practice was ripe (across Australia, football clubs included). Everyone's aware of past woes, move on. No one thinks Roar's perfect now, certainly not me and not the fans I speak to on game day. Most only care about win/lose (good/bad) and all support the team. But everyone I speak to acknowledges they are trying very hard to turn the club around. If you can't see the improvements this season I can't help you. I'm not interested in personal vitriol, but your complete turnaround from your RSF days, being an advocate for Roar to its #1 critic tells me something is up Waz (definitely not a SpecSavers issue). I might add, as its topical, Roar CEO had a very reassuring email out to fans within 24 hours of Sunday's game. My email to them crossed in the ether but I got a detailed reply on their immediate actions a few hours later, and an immediate follow-up on a point I queried. This just has not happened under Fong or previous CEOs.
