Monster Tribunal night confirmed as Giants challenge Greene, Hogan bans, Eagles appeal star's dangerous tackle

By The Roar / Editor

Adam Kingsley leant on the “Toby tax” sentiment in defending Toby Greene, but the GWS captain has received a one-match suspension for a high hit on Carlton’s Jordan Boyd.

Greene collided with Boyd in a final-quarter marking contest as the Giants’ winning start to the AFL season came to a screeching halt in a 19-point defeat to Carlton at Marvel Stadium on Saturday.

Greene was leading for the ball and jumped for a mark, turning his body at the last second before crashing into Boyd, who was running back with the flight.

Boyd was hit in the head and awarded a free kick, but got up and seemingly had no ill-effects from the contact.

However, Match Review Officer Michael Christian graded the incident as careless conduct, medium impact and high contact, resulting in a one-match ban.

Making matters worse for the Giants, they are set to be without star forward Jesse Hogan as well for a crunch Anzac Day clash with Brisbane, after he too was given a one-match sanction for an off-the-ball hit on Blues defender Lewis Young.

Hogan faced scrutiny over a left-handed blow to Blues defender Lewis Young’s face during a scuffle in the goal square during the final quarter, with Christian grading it intentional conduct, low impact and high contact.

The Giants confirmed on Monday via a typically humorous social media post that they will challenge both Greene and Hogan’s bans at the AFL Tribunal.

Greene has a long history of run-ins with the AFL match review officer and tribunal, but GWS coach Kingsley was adamant the 221-game star does not deserve sanction over the latest incident.

“There won’t be anything in that,” Kingsley said after the Giants’ 17.15 (117) to 15.8 (98) defeat.

“He’s allowed to contest the ball, isn’t he? He’s allowed to launch at the ball?

“And if you’re running and launching at the ball, and you’ve got your eyes for the ball, and you’re trying to take a chest mark, and you get knocked … free kick against?

“It’s hard being Toby.”

The Greene-Boyd collision drew immediate comparisons to the one that led to Essendon’s Peter Wright being handed a four-match ban.

Wright caused far more damage to his opponent, Sydney’s Harry Cunningham, who was concussed.

Kingsley was blunt when asked if it is hard for players leading at the ball.

Sports opinion delivered daily

“No, just Toby,” he said.

Carlton coach Michael Voss was on the bench near the Greene-Boyd collision, but said he had not seen a replay.

Voss heaped praise Boyd for a strong defensive performance after he shifted on to Greene and kept him scoreless from four touches in the second half.

“That was a really important role for us,” the coach said.

“Greene’s a wonderful player, a very dangerous player … and Boydy did a great job.”

West Coast defender Tom Barrass also copped a week’s suspension for a dangerous tackle on Fremantle forward Michael Walters, with the incident graded careless conduct, medium impact and high contact.

The Eagles confirmed on Monday they will also be challenging the suspension at the Tribunal alongside Greene and Hogan in a third case on Tuesday night.

“In that shot he’s already pushing off to jump” as I said “he hasn’t yet left the ground” unless somehow he is pushing off while off the ground we agree. “Unless his arm is already completely tucked in” We can argue about what constitutes “completely tucked in” but is is certainly held across his body in a “tucked in” style. ” you can see his right hand is still cupped out” not sure what your definition of “cupped” is but you can clearly see the back of Wright’s right hand is facing the ball (as opposed to the Sydney player who has both the palms of his hands facing up in a “cupping” action). “The other thing you need to factor in is that Wright seriously injured his right shoulder 12 months earlier. ” I can tell he is worried about it due to the complete absence of any strapping on his shoulder. “then there’s no way you can sensibly point to this as a conscious decision to hit his opponent.” I guarantee that if you go frame by frame from this point his right hand only rotates further from the ball and his right shoulder further towards his opponent. You can try very hard to see what you want to in that shot but to the unbiased eye it is very damning.

Sorry but that's a bizarre interpretation. Put a Blues guernsey on him and there's no way you'd be saying the same thing. In that shot he's already pushing off to jump. It's about 0.2 seconds pre-contact. Unless his arm is already completely tucked in - which it isn't, since you can see his right hand is still cupped out in front of his body (look at the shadow on his other arm) - then there's no way you can sensibly point to this as a conscious decision to hit his opponent. The other thing you need to factor in is that Wright seriously injured his right shoulder 12 months earlier. There is absolutely no chance he intentionally leads with that shoulder if he wants the contact. It doesn't even make sense to turn in that direction with a perfectly healthy shoulder.

Look at where his right arm is positioned in that image, he hasn't yet left the ground but he has already brought his leading arm across his body to brace for contact. This image is a damning piece of evidence as to why Wright got 4 weeks.

Sorry my comments are about 12 hours behinds as I am watching replays from the US. I just watched Jonathan Brown on On the Couch moaning about the sport becoming soft because Toby got a week. He trotted out the tired excuse of Toby bracing to protect himself. I completely disagree. If you make decision to not contest the ball and you tuck your arm in go shoulder first you are not trying to protect yourself. You are trying make the other player "earn" it. You are trying to hurt the other player. If the goal was to minimize impact, you would extend your arms and hit the other players chest or shoulders and use your arm length to decelerate and lessen the impact. Bracing to protect yourself?? Give me a break! Imagine the other person in the contest was someone you absolutely did not want to hurt. As an extreme example, if the player was in a collision with his mother would he tuck an arm and hit his mother in the head with his shoulder? No, the player would find some way to minimize the potential impact. He owes that same duty of care to a vulnerable player.

Here he is on his launch step, eyes still on the footy, arms still in front as if anticipating a chest mark. So, no. It was only when he was already committed that he changed his mind and protected himself. I honestly find the whole narrative about Wright playing the man pretty strange, given his good record as a fair player (and conversely, the Toby sympathy is just as odd, since his record is as spotty as Wright's is clean). https://scontent-syd2-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t39.30808-6/432214634_10163822328272846_6888950266869099236_n.jpg?_nc_cat=107&ccb=1-7&_nc_sid=5f2048&_nc_ohc=uzUdQvWg3z4Ab78JoIh&_nc_ht=scontent-syd2-1.xx&oh=00_AfBokhIzR9GGBKGKZweIoWaIpVqkCstA6O9-0yXbNy69mg&oe=662CB5FA

Wesley College? He should have played rugby union. He'd have been very good at it. Not wishing to be controversial and I'm definitely not sparking a code war, but he might have been better at it. He just soaks up collisions.

As a Bombers member, I feel Wright's bump looks worse in some ways. He's far more casual, almost nonchalant in contact. That said, his eyes are on the ball. Greene on the other hand launches with an intent to collide, closes his eyes, and looks away. He doesnt pay any attention to the ball. Wright's contact is sloppy which makes it look worse. Greene is more compact but has no attempt at the ball. I think Greene's 1 week should stand.

Barrass will probably get 1 week. Is he a better character than Cameron?

The only way players can avoid suspensions these days is to go completely against their natural instincts and not turn their body. They have to keep their body open and risk damage to their sternum, ribs, jaw etc. A 'textbook' example is when Shane Mumford ironed out Mitch Duncan. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fnNxywLoYhU

The difference is the result of the player on the receiving end. In Peter Wright's instance, he left the player concussed and in Greene's case, the player was able to play on. I think there are serious flaws to this approach but that's the AFL for you.

Walters had an arm free and the tackle had already gone on long enough to earn Barrass the free. But Walters trying to slip out meant that he was at the end of Barrass's long arm and he being canny enough to know that he'd be pinged, chose to hit the deck. It was Walters' evasive tactics that led to the infringement, not Barrass's 'sling' motion.

When the Wright incident happened a Bombers supporter posted an image of Wright where he had turned and braced before he had even left the ground and watching live it looked to me that he had made a decision to "make him earn it" from a long way out.

I really don't understand the last part of your comment, Macca, because I don't see that at all when I watch the two incidents (even tryng to pry my other eye open). Wright realised too late that he couldn't mark the ball and braced. I think Greene actually *could* have tried to mark the ball - which literally bounced off him - and opted to brace instead. Also, I know still images can be a bit misleading but this one doesn't look great lol: https://library.sportingnews.com/styles/crop_style_16_9_desktop/s3/2024-04/Toby%20Greene%20Jordan%20Boyd%20042024%20crop.jpg?h=9eca8fe3&itok=Cljfgnry

Wright did absolutely not lead with his forearm or elbow. A quick google image/video search makes this obvious. He tucked his arm in, the same as Greene. The difference is that Wright was slightly higher and more front-on when contact was made, so unlike with the Greene incident it wasn't the point of the shoulder that hit Cunningham. It was partly bicep/chest. Also, unlike Wright, who was caught out of position in the contest, Greene probably could have marked the ball. It actually bounced off him right as the impact occurred. I honestly think you could mount an argument that this makes the action itself worse, since he had a clear alternative to bracing for contact, whereas Wright was stuffed as soon as he left the ground. Greene is ultimately just lucky his opponent was okay, especially since he's been offered the minimum sanction where Wright got an extra week. I think they'd be playing with fire if they challenged.

It’s on the Wikipedia page for the tribunal - https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/AFL_Tribunal - but nobody else is mentioning it so it mustn’t work that way I guess
