Mixed news for Giants as Greene, Hogan Tribunal verdicts revealed

By The Roar / Editor

GWS captain Toby Greene has been suspended for the eighth time in his career after failing in his bid to clear himself of a one-game ban at the tribunal.

Greene will sit out the Giants’ clash with the Brisbane Lions on Anzac Day after being suspended for the first time since infamously making contact with an umpire during an elimination final against Sydney in 2021.

The tribunal upheld a rough conduct charge on Carlton defender Jordan Boyd during the Giants’ loss on Saturday.

It takes the tally of games missed due to suspension during Greene’s 221-game career up to 15.

The Giants star led at the ball and jumped for a mark but turned his body just before a collision and made contact with the head of Boyd, who was going back with the flight of the ball.

Boyd got up immediately to take a free kick and played out the match.

Greene’s actions were graded as careless conduct, medium impact and high contact.

“Prior to impact Greene had abandoned his attempt to mark the ball and turn his body to brace for impact,” tribunal chairman Jeff Gleeson said.

“Noting again that Greene admitted this was a high bump.”

Greene gave evidence saying he had eyes only for the ball and only realised when it was too late he would not be able to take the mark.

His legal representative, Anais d’Arville, claimed Greene’s actions were not unreasonable in the circumstances.

“The whole time I thought I was a good chance to take the mark,” Greene said.

“At the last moment I realised he was going to touch the ball before me, then I braced for impact.”

However, Jesse Hogan is free to play Brisbane on Anzac Day, after the AFL Tribunal ruled the Giants star had no case to answer for a strike on Carlton defender Lewis Young.

Hogan’s hit that caught the Blue in the fact during GWS’ loss on Saturday was deemed to have been of insufficient force to constitute a reportable offence, with the Tribunal ruling that the potential to cause injury, commonly used in cases of rough conduct such as bumping, would not apply.

Tribunal chairperson Jeff Gleeson determined that a new rule brought in for the 2024 season allowing incidents graded as negligible impact could be upgraded to ‘low’ impact based on said potential to cause injury, thereby triggering a one-week suspension, would not apply for striking charges.

“In light of the ruling delivered in this matter, in order for the charge of striking to be sustained, it is necessary that there is a finding of more than negligible impact,” Gleeson said following the hearing.

“We find there was not.”

The Giants successfully argued that Young’s clear medical report and the glancing nature of the strike was enough to constitute ‘negligible’ impact, with Hogan claiming he had attempted to hit Young in the chest before his hand ricocheted off the Blue’s arm and up into his face.

The verdict comes despite the Giants forward stating during the hearing that Young had said ‘You’re going to get a week for that’.

Then you have the quintessential good bloke,Tom Barrass, getting a week because Walters didn't quite get out of his grasp. He had an arm free but chose not to protect himself. How a player can be slung by two fingers is beyond me.

To be fair PD he learns every lesson. Can't hit, Can't gouge, Can't jab with foot, Can't antagonise doggies at will, can't touch annoying people in yellow, Can't go for ball like in the olden days.

Interesting evidence of Toby Greene’s peripheral vision. As soon as he left the ground he tucked his left arm in and twisted his body to canon into Boyd, yet kept his eyes on the ball at all times. So he knew exactly where Boyd was and when he would arrive, despite not looking at him. The tribunal ruled correctly that he didn’t genuinely contest the ball; he made a split-second decision not to attempt to mark or spoil as soon as he left the ground and to instead take-out the oncoming player as best he could, and possessed enough high footy IQ to think that if he kept his eyes on the footy then the governing body wouldn’t dare punish him. Next time this recidivist goes to the tribunal – and there will be a next time – when he collects a player and argues he didn’t see him (for example, a studs-up mark like he did a few weeks ago) then the tribunal can dismiss this fib on the basis of photographic evidence of his outstanding peripheral vision presented in last night’s tribunal.

I can only watch these new slapping competitions on youtube for only a little while. Even our rudimentary knowledge of CTE should prohibit any head high contact. Who hasnt seen a relatively innocous contacts impact to a player who has previous trauma. Didnt Buddy get suspended for doing this to Cotchin who initiated it all by holds blocking etc for arguably a lighter hit? Again the outcome again by the AFL MRO. Stoopid

But George Hewett (Carlton) was not suspended for punching Lachie Neale in the face. That looked worse than this Hogan hit. Or don't we talk about that anymore? No one here is mentioning it. No one anywhere is mentioning it. I'm a bit nervous bringing it up in case I get a call from the Carlton lawyers.

Because mason Redman was suspended Jesse Hogan needs to be suspended. The tribunal needs to focus on consistently upholding precedent more than anything else because right now they’ve been woeful and the afl as a whole is gonna pay the price

No one including the AFL is advocating touch football here. No coach is going to ever train their players not to jump. They are going to need to train their players not to jump into players marking the ball with their shoulder making contact with their opponents head. https://wwos.nine.com.au/videos/afl/afl-news-2024-carlton-blues-vs-gws-giants-toby-green-hit-on-jordan-boyd-incident/clv9e5nev000c0gkdtl62dlqt

That punch, which Hogan admitted was swung with force, could easily have resulted in serious damage if it struck a different spot by just millimetres.

Really don't understand how deliberately 2 punches, one striking you opponent in the face is deemed acceptable in our game when players are being suspended every week for getting otherwise legitimate contests or tackles slightly wrong.

Just on Colonel Hogan's escape; Not to condone this minor violence but Young was indulging in a component of one of the curses of the modern game, blocking. All over the ground off the ball, 150 metres, 100 metres, 50 metres from the ball, doesn't matter, block, block, block. When the ball goes in actual vicinity the 3rd and 4th defender start blocking well before the ball arrives, let alone the one or two at the ball drop. Umps should crack down on it.

Greene is lucky to have only gotten a week. And I’m flabbergasted that Hogan got off. What the Tribunal is now saying is that you can punch someone in the face and not get punished, as long as it’s not too hard. Just astonishing.

Yes, I probably worded it incorrectly. I meant for anyone wanting to split hair's between the guilty & the non guilty verdict last night. Of the two incidents, only one of them was ever going to result in concussion. I hope Hogan was fined & given a strong warning. My Mrs would be glad to trade me in for a better model, but those ladies you speak of would be setting a pretty low bar themselves if they were prepared to sign me up on a long term contract.

In future incidence a player heading for ball will have to second guess or not participate. AFL be warned the game is headed towards non contact. Furthermore as l’ve mentioned it past posts jumping in air is now frowned upon & coaches will be imploring players not to jump into contests.

And that's a fact. Here I am thinking that if you hit an opponent in the head :boxing: these days you are in serious trouble At a minimum it was a fine but then they couldn't let him off Very lucky...but a Pandora's box

Well, we can agree to disagree. I think disregarding a punch because it was not going to result in concussion is a pretty low bar. What if the enraged, retaliatory punch does resolve in a concussion? Fingers crossed I am over-reacting. Incidentally, I know a few girls who are looking for you. They say you are just about impossible to find. I don't think they'd come looking here, but just thought I'd give you a heads up.

Toby is a super player indeed, but sometimes we just have to live in a world we make for ourselves. He braced for impact as his timing was just a bit out, but that is no consolation to the player lying on the ground undergoing a concussion check.
