The AFL season is over, but it’s not the end of the road for footy fans, with the 2023 trade period beginning today. Join The Roar for a live blog and rolling coverage of the day’s news, rumours and action from 9am (AEDT).

The free agency period began on Friday, and already the moves have begun to fly in.

Sydney have been particularly busy, landing James Jordon from Melbourne and Joel Hamling from Fremantle as free agents, and it’s unlikely to end there.

The Swans are tipped to be one of the biggest players in the 10-day trade period, with Dees ruckman Brodie Grundy and Collingwood vice-captain Taylor Adams both set to be wearing red and white in 2024, though with both under contract at their respective clubs getting a deal done won’t be easy.

West Coast have also received ruckman Matt Flynn as a free agent from GWS, but the biggest focus for the Eagles will be whether or not they decide to hang onto their prized pick 1, and with it the rights to highly rated draftee Harley Reid.

Reid is seen as a flight risk should he land at a non-Victorian club, despite him recently stating he’d be comfortable with a move west; with North Melbourne holding a swathe of high draft picks as a result of both the AFL’s draft assistance package and looming hefty compensation for losing Ben McKay as a restricted free agent, the Kangaroos could well be involved in a deal.

Yes fair call, however, too many people are stating beliefs as if facts, and its becoming an epidemic, needs to be challenged when it happens

I think that answers my question from the other thread. Hope for his sake that Collingwood see it that way - but since it's for family, possibly one of half a dozen Vic teams would suit.

It's not a huge blow at all. He can go for free next year. Going this year, we'll get a high second round pick for a third round player for whom we get nothing next year. He's certainly replaceable. Terrific player but Freo has 5 like him.

Straight trade to Freo.

Yeah whatever, Don. Can't accept there's a worrying trend at Freo, hey? That's your problem!

Yeah, sort of. We are trading 17 and a future first for 4 really. That’s a good trade if we do well next year and get a 10 year player, but it couldn’t turn out very ugly. No doubt it’s a gamble.

4, Croft but not a 10, 17 or a first round pick next year. A future first to go from 17 to 4 might not be too bad, but if Croft goes at 11 you are giving up a future first to go from 10 to 4

There-there, Donsy. No need to be so touchy. Name a club, any club, that has had as many players want out in recent seasons! Something's on the nose at Freo.

And that's a wrap for Day 1 of the AFL Trade Period - gotta say, it's been busier than I expected! The Lachie Schultz news is a proper bombshell, but with Todd Goldstein and Tom Doedee finding new homes via free agency, we're yet to see our first proper trade of players. Tune back in tomorrow for (hopefully) some more action as the silly season gets going!

Not many regular players do. Schultz is leaving because of family issues in Victoria. It is your style to mock that.

Freo has an extra 2nd rounder for finishing 15th. Pick 22 was for Griffin Logue.

Freo will have a couple of second rounders next year, probably, with stuff for Henry and Shultz. You seem to have missed the part about Freo getting a first rounder...hardly free.

He's an upgrade on some the forwards they have, and they will lose a few as well.

Really good but easily covered. He rejected Hawthorn overtures last year and signed again at Freo but his family situation in Victoria has taken a bit of a turn. He'll be good for somebody if he goes but with Sonny, Switta, Freddy, Sturt and Banfield, players were going to be squeezed out. Nice late second round early third for him...possibly a futures pick which will allow some good NGA points for next year. Terrific club man.

Good player , Elliott not getting any younger . Adams also played as a half forward and we will most likely lose him. Could be s good move for the future ? But yes one more tall should be the priority

Well, they traded well last year. As a result, we are nicely set up with 23 players 24 or under and 13 of those 20 or under. Apart from 3 or 4 of them, all have got some significant AFL footy under their belts with all positions covered.
