The AFL season is over, but it’s not the end of the road for footy fans, with the 2023 trade period beginning today. Join The Roar for a live blog and rolling coverage of the day’s news, rumours and action from 9am (AEDT).
The free agency period began on Friday, and already the moves have begun to fly in.
Sydney have been particularly busy, landing James Jordon from Melbourne and Joel Hamling from Fremantle as free agents, and it’s unlikely to end there.
The Swans are tipped to be one of the biggest players in the 10-day trade period, with Dees ruckman Brodie Grundy and Collingwood vice-captain Taylor Adams both set to be wearing red and white in 2024, though with both under contract at their respective clubs getting a deal done won’t be easy.
West Coast have also received ruckman Matt Flynn as a free agent from GWS, but the biggest focus for the Eagles will be whether or not they decide to hang onto their prized pick 1, and with it the rights to highly rated draftee Harley Reid.
Reid is seen as a flight risk should he land at a non-Victorian club, despite him recently stating he’d be comfortable with a move west; with North Melbourne holding a swathe of high draft picks as a result of both the AFL’s draft assistance package and looming hefty compensation for losing Ben McKay as a restricted free agent, the Kangaroos could well be involved in a deal.
