AFL trade period latest news and rumours: Day 1 live blog

By Josh / Expert

The AFL’s player movement period officially gets underway today as free agency opens and the first players begin to move. Join The Roar for live updates on all the latest trade news and rumours, starting from 9am AEST.

What can we expect to see get done today? A number of impending free agency deals have been telegraphed well in advance, and seem likely to be completed today.

First off you can expect Tom J Lynch to officially join the Richmond Tigers today on what is expected to be a seven-year deal.

Lynch won’t technically be a Richmond player until Gold Coast decline to match the offer, which may take until early next week – but expect the Tigers to formally lodge their bid for him today.

Also on the cards today is Luke Dahlahus’ impending moved to the Geelong Cats. The Dogs said shortly after their season ended that Dahlhaus would leave the club, and you’d assume the details are already finalised.

The same goes for Alex Fasolo who will likely sign a three-year deal to join the Carlton Blues today.

Fasolo and Dahlhaus are both unrestricted free agents, meaning that they’ll join their new clubs officially as soon as the bids are submitted.

Other potential deals today include Reece Conca to Fremantle and George Horlin-Smith to Gold Coast, though it wouldn’t surprise if there’s a little more to play out on both. Taylor Duryea to Sydney could be in the same boat.

There seems to be plenty left to play out on Daniel Menzel and Jordan Roughead’s futures – both are a chance to move this year, but it’s not clear exactly where to just yet.

Don’t expect any big news regarding Scott Lycett or Andrew Gaff today. The West Coast Eagles are having their best and fairest tonight, and you’d suspect any announcement on their futures will instead come early next week after the premiership celebrations have been thoroughly enjoyed.

It's not self entitled at all dandy, a little history lesson for you, wce traded their top round pick this year with the plan to get Ryan and Kelly, we took Ryan first as it was assumed no club would be dumb enough to uproot a young family with a 2 year old and twins on the way and inflict all the problems that would happen to this young family on them, in steps Geelong.....well done there cats, I said Kelly will last a year before the stresses of his wife(and very likely post natal depression) will lead him to ask for trade to wce tada, now anything about forcing a trade for gaff was to be nice to Geelong but if they want to go all entitled when they are a club built on raiding Carlton and GCS and got the best player in the league at the time from trading and not really paying what any of those players are truly worth, I'll call space a spade and say the truth that Kelly is a mid to late teens pick as his volume of work is one year and his families needs for compassion are just a tad higher than most out there, in the end I would say one of our compo and a future second rounder will be the price.

Are his and her parents not enough? How many parents does a grown boy need?

Scooter couldn't get on the park and that has continued to be the case at Geelong. 38 was value for the injured warrior.

Kelly for Kersten AND Matera...and we'll throw in pick 77 as well.

Is the WC tail in front of them? If The Cats got in first, how can they be "jumping on the WC tails?"

Preuss is a strange one. Surely someone has whispered to him by now and set him straight. NM must be paying him peanuts. If someone offers him $300k a year more, he'd probably find being a second string ruckman a little more palatable. Surprised WC hasn't had a nibble.

Good on the Cats for standing firm with Kelly. Typical high standards from a high standard club. They are in a premiership window and have every right to hold him to his contract.

You find someone's thoughts on a situation progressing to be amazing? People who perform disappearing acts are more amazing. Although some of the magic is lost when they come back.

Pretty clear he wanted to go to SA and Port is paying big overs IMO. I’d rather have Cats gone after Pruess at NM. Don’t get why Pruess wants to go from being stuck behind Goldstein to being stuck behind Gawn.

Amazing how your tune has changed. You always like o remind people when you were ‘right’ about something but all the other times you were either dead set wrong or completely changed your tune you ignore. A week ago you were ‘sure’ WC would get NM pick 10 and ontrade it to Geelong for Kelly. Now that you realise you won’t get pick 10 out of NM Kelly is suddenly worth less. Why do you people who win a flag suddenly become so self entitled?

I'd say he's pretty comparable...and Neale is in the top 10 midfielders in the comp...maybe top 5. Kelly is thereabouts. He just outpolled all of Geelong's midfielders in the B & F apart from Danger...who he equalled. Kelly is that good. It took a while for everything to align but he is as good as anyone.

That would put him in comparable territory to Neale which he clearly isn't close to yet, one sparrow doesn't make a summer, so as he is a first year player who performed well but will be 25 soon he isn't worth a top 5 or 10.

You know he can say no don’t you? He’s not in the army. People move to the other side of the country all the time, without the support that they get from footy clubs. They’re just soft nowadays.

No he wasn’t. He’s not in the army, he didn’t have to go, he chose to go.

Sorry Tom do your research and don't shoot from the hip next time and you'll realise your errors, and don't worry I'm not as precious as you.

He has total say. He executes the club's wishes...and he is heading the trades and drafts at the moment.

Then they should have drafted him! What nonsense. And you're swearing at me. Get bent, Matt.

The 'E' stands for Executive. That is the person who executes club actions.

You might not have picked up the nuance...which was not very nuancey...in the brackets.
